The intersection of capitalism and the beauty industry has given rise to a concept known as beauty capitalism. Globalization has propelled capitalism in the beauty industry to become massive and expansive, resulting in exploitative impacts on the environment and society. Empowerment efforts targeting specific communities and environments are needed to ensure that business activities can support sustainability. This can be achieved by a beauty company through the implementation of fair trade practices. L'Occitane Group, as one entity in the international beauty industry sector, strives to implement fair trade principles to empower the environment and society for sustainable development. This is done through a series of programs, ranging from supply chains to product distribution processes to consumers. This research applies the concepts of Fair Trade and Empowerment for Sustainable Development to analyze and provide a detailed overview of L'Occitane Group's implementation of fair trade for sustainable development. Findings from this research identify that L'Occitane conducts its programs for sustainable purposes in both ecological and socio-economic sectors

    TIMS data applications in Nebraska

    Get PDF
A total of 172 flight-line miles of Thermal Infrared Multispectral Scanner (TIMS) data were acquired in the state of Nebraska; and an additional mission is planned for August of this year. Data collected by the scanner were generally applied to investigations in four general areas: hydrology, geology, soils, and vegetation analysis. Relatively simple manipulations of these thermal-emittance data led to excellent classifications of vegetation communities established along topographic gradients in the Nebraska Sandhills. Similar procedures were used to study variations in soil parameters along those same routes. Proposed geologic applications include mapping of the surficial geology along a portion of the Platte River and the delineation of a segment of the Cambridge Arch, a structural feature in central Nebraska

Skin Cancer: Causes, Prevention, and Treatment

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the causes, prevention, and treatment of skin cancer. Skin cancers are defined as either malignant or benign cells that typically arise from excessive exposure to UV radiation. Arguably, skin cancer is a type of cancer that can most easily be prevented; prevention of skin cancer is relatively simple, but often ignored. An important aspect in discussing the epidemiology of skin cancer is understanding the treatments that are available, as well as the prevention methods that can be implemented in every day practice. It is estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer during his or her lifetime, and that one person will die from melanoma every hour of the day. To an epidemiologist and health promotion advocate, these figures are daunting for a disease, especially for a disease that has ample means of prevention. However, even with sufficient prevention methods, a lack of education and promotion of a practice will not lead to favorable results. This thesis will aim to uncover the causes and treatments associated with skin cancer, the disease, distribution, and determinants of the disease, and finally, how the promotion of the practice of prevention of this disease can be furthered

ENGLISH: Levels of stress and mental health disorders adulthood increased five times higher than the conditions experienced in the era of the great depression in 1938 ago. The trigger came from school and popular culture in everyday life (Lubis, 2010). The symptoms of burnout are also found in some College students, it’s not impossible that also occurred in Ma'had Sunan Ampel al-Aly State University of Malang. This greatly affects the psychological well being of individuals. The activities of segue Albanjari as tradition has certain values that can be expressed in terms of Psychological Well Being of the player. This study is a qualitative research with ethnographic approach. Subjects in this study is a student who became an active player of Shalawat Albanjari and a caretaker at Ma'had Sunan Ampel al-Aly, and involving informant who related to the subject. The technique of collecting data using interviews, and observation (qualitative data). In this study, Psychological Well Being theory of Carol D. Ryff is used as a reference. The results showed that there are some values contained in the Shalawat Albanjari, those are: behavior value, character value, psychological value, compactness value, education value, cultural values, simplicity values, creativity values, spiritual values, leadership values, responsibility values, discipline values, and social values. Moreover, psychological well being can be conceptualized as a state of being comfortable, heart always feels calm when faced with problems, feeling happy because of capitulate everything to God. Then, the process of achieving psychological well being those are, by sensing the rhythm of the Shalawat Albanjari music; doing routine music exercise; sensing tones which can affect emotions; sensing the shalawat meaning as the prayer and praise; sensing and imagining the presence of the Prophet in the heart; practicing the values which contained in the Shalawat Albanjari. Those activities can stimulate mind to retrieve Allah; rise a happiness feeling; make ourself to be closer to Allah; create the feeling of devotion to Allah; stimulate curiosity about Allah so that can recognize Him by His creature; recharge energy; reduce stress and burnout. All of those effects can rise positive psychological well being in the form of being comfortable, serenity, and happy feelings. So that finally, everyone can well run their activities and face the problem of life calmly

Two-Level Systems in Evaporated Amorphous Silicon

In ee-beam evaporated amorphous silicon (aa-Si), the densities of two-level systems (TLS), n0n_{0} and P\overline{P}, determined from specific heat CC and internal friction Q1Q^{-1} measurements, respectively, have been shown to vary by over three orders of magnitude. Here we show that n0n_{0} and P\overline{P} are proportional to each other with a constant of proportionality that is consistent with the measurement time dependence proposed by Black and Halperin and does not require the introduction of additional anomalous TLS. However, n0n_{0} and P\overline{P} depend strongly on the atomic density of the film (nSin_{\rm Si}) which depends on both film thickness and growth temperature suggesting that the aa-Si structure is heterogeneous with nanovoids or other lower density regions forming in a dense amorphous network. A review of literature data shows that this atomic density dependence is not unique to aa-Si. These findings suggest that TLS are not intrinsic to an amorphous network but require a heterogeneous structure to form

Limit Cycle Analysis Applied to the Oscillations of Decelerating Blunt-Body Entry Vehicles

    Get PDF
Many blunt-body entry vehicles have nonlinear dynamic stability characteristics that produce self-limiting oscillations in flight. Several different test techniques can be used to extract dynamic aerodynamic coefficients to predict this oscillatory behavior for planetary entry mission design and analysis. Most of these test techniques impose boundary conditions that alter the oscillatory behavior from that seen in flight. Three sets of test conditions, representing three commonly used test techniques, are presented to highlight these effects. Analytical solutions to the constant-coefficient planar equations-of-motion for each case are developed to show how the same blunt body behaves differently depending on the imposed test conditions. The energy equation is applied to further illustrate the governing dynamics. Then, the mean value theorem is applied to the energy rate equation to find the effective damping for an example blunt body with nonlinear, self-limiting dynamic characteristics. This approach is used to predict constant-energy oscillatory behavior and the equilibrium oscillation amplitudes for the various test conditions. These predictions are verified with planar simulations. The analysis presented provides an overview of dynamic stability test techniques and illustrates the effects of dynamic stability, static aerodynamics and test conditions on observed dynamic motions. It is proposed that these effects may be leveraged to develop new test techniques and refine test matrices in future tests to better define the nonlinear functional forms of blunt body dynamic stability curves
