    CHINA'S INTERNATIONAL TOURISM UNDER ECONOMIC TRANSITION: NATIONAL TRENDS AND REGIONAL DISPARITIES

    China's Tourism industry, especially international tourism, has expanded rapidly since its market-oriented economic reform started in 1978. There has been limited information regarding the trends and regional disparities. This paper examines the national trends of China's international tourism since 1982 and analyzes the changes in regional disparities since 1995. While the trend analysis suggests that China's international tourism is likely to keep growing at a significant rate, the analysis of regional disparities based on Gini coefficient indicates that the regional inequality in the number of international tourists and income has shown a downward trend since 1995. Findings from this study suggest that China's economic reform has stimulated the growth in international tourism and the international tourism has contributed to its economic growth and business development.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

    Understanding the structure-emulsification relationship of gum ghatti – a review of recent advances

    This paper is based on a series of physical and chemical investigations to understand the structure-function properties of gum ghatti. After elucidating the detailed molecular structure of two gum ghatti fractions, the structure of its component glycoprotein was investigated whereby, the protein sequence and hydrophobicity were identified, followed by the conformational analysis of the gum and its fractions. Many techniques were used for the elucidation of the fine structures, which included methylation analysis-GC-MS, Maldi-TOF MS and 2D NMR spectroscopy, homonuclear ¹H/¹H correlations spectroscopy (COSY, TOCSY), heteronuclear ¹³C/¹H multiple-quantum coherence spectroscopy (HMQC) and heteronuclear multiple bond correlation (HMBC). Conformational properties were studied using a modelling system (Insight II) to relate the hydrophobicity of the protein moieties with the complex structures of the carbohydrates. These studies now provide an explanation for the excellent emulsification properties of gum ghatti in oil-in-water emulsions, which enable its application in the food, cosmetic and/or pharmaceutical industries

Journal of Nutritional Science. doi:10.1017/jns.2017.15Corn and soyabean micronutrient-fortified-blended foods (FBF) are commonly used for food aid. Sorghum and cowpeas have been suggested as alternative commodities because they are drought tolerant, can be grown in many localities, and are not genetically modified. Change in formulation of blends may improve protein quality, vitamin A and Fe availability of FBF. The primary objective of this study was to compare protein efficiency, Fe and vitamin A availability of newly formulated extruded sorghum-, cowpea-, soya- and corn-based FBF, along with a current, non-extruded United States Agency for International Development (USAID) corn and soya blend FBF (CSB+). A second objective was to compare protein efficiency of whey protein concentrate (WPC) and soya protein isolate (SPI) containing FBF to determine whether WPC inclusion improved outcomes. Eight groups of growing rats (n 10) consumed two white and one red sorghum–cowpea (WSC1 + WPC, WSC2 + WPC, RSC + WPC), white sorghum–soya (WSS + WPC) and corn–soya (CSB14 + WPC) extruded WPC-containing FBF, an extruded white sorghum–cowpea with SPI (WSC1 + SPI), non-extruded CSB+, and American Institute of Nutrition (AIN)-93G, a weanling rat diet, for 4 weeks. There were no significant differences in protein efficiency, Fe or vitamin A outcomes between WPC FBF groups. The CSB+ group consumed significantly less food, gained significantly less weight, and had significantly lower energy efficiency, protein efficiency and length, compared with all other groups. Compared with WSC1 + WPC, the WSC1 + SPI FBF group had significantly lower energy efficiency, protein efficiency and weight gain. These results suggest that a variety of commodities can be used in the formulation of FBF, and that newly formulated extruded FBF are of better nutritional quality than non-extruded CSB+.     Production of Martian fiber by in-situ resource utilization strategy

    Many countries and commercial organizations have shown great interest in constructing Martian base. In-situ resource utilization (ISRU) provides a cost-effective way to achieve this ambitious goal. In this paper, we proposed to use Martian soil simulant to produce fiber to satisfy material requirement for the construction of Martian base. The composition, melting behavior and fiber forming process of soil simulant was studied, and continuous fiber with a maximum strength of 1320 MPa was obtained on a spinning facility. The findings of this study demonstrate the feasibility of ISRU to prepare Martian fiber from the soil on the Mars, offering a new way to get key materials for the construction of Martian base

    Comparative Genomic Analysis of Latilactobacillus curvatus and L. sakei

    In this study, the genomes of 19 Latilactobacillus curvatus and 40 L. sakei strains were comparatively analyzed. Average nucleic acid identity (ANI) and genome-wide colinearity indicated that the genomes of L. curvatus and L. sakei had weak nucleotide sequence homology, allowing them to be used as indicators to distinguish the two species. Pangenomes for these species were constructed, whose core gene functions were annotated. The results showed that the core genomes of L. curvatus and L. sakei were mainly involved in their basic metabolism. Analysis of individual genomes of the strains revealed that 1) both L. curvatus and L. sakei contained a wide range of genes encoding glycoside hydrolases, which are abundant genetic resources for catabolizing and metabolizing dietary fiber such as polysaccharides, lactose utilization, and lignocellulose; 2) antibiotic resistance genes were annotated in the genomes of three strains, which originate from horizontal gene transfer; 3) the unique arginine deiminase pathway of L. sakei, the serine dehydratase and guanine deaminase pathways of L. curvatus, and the glutamate decarboxylase pathway of several strains were identified, revealing that the acid tolerance mechanisms of these two species are different; and 4) genes encoding cold stress proteins were discovered, which endow the two species with good cold processing properties. Moreover, the genomes of some L. sakei strains contained gene clusters related to the biosynthesis of lactocin S and condensin. In conclusion, this study established taxonomic criteria for the two species and information on individual differences between their strains, which will provide a basis for the study of the physiological, biochemical, molecular genetic mechanisms of L. curvatus and L. sakei and their industrial applications

    Comparison of the Volatile Components in Chinese Traditional Xiaoqu Liquor

    Volatile components in Sichuan Xiaoqu liquor of Chongqing Jiangjin District, Chongqing Yongchuan District, Sichuan Kaijiang County, Sichuan Zigong were studied by the method of combining headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) with gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results showed that 29, 31, 44, 45 kinds of aromatic components were identified from the Xiaoqu liquor of Jiangjin, Chongqing Yongchuan, Kaijiang and Zigong respectively. Esters, alcohols as well as aldehydes and ketones are the main substances. According to peak area relative percentage contents, content of ethyl acetate, isoamyl alcohol and ethyl caprate in the 4 kinds of Xiaoqu liquor is relatively high

    Conformational Properties of Flaxseed Rhamnogalacturonan-I and Correlation between Primary Structure and Conformation

    The pectic polysaccharides extracted from flaxseed (Linum usitatissiumum L.) mucilage and kernel were characterized as rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I). In this study, the conformational characteristics of RG-I fractions from flaxseed mucilage and kernel were investigated, using a Brookhaven multi-angle light scattering instrument (batch mode) and a high-performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) system coupled with Viscotek tetra-detectors (flow mode). The Mw of flaxseed mucilage RG-I (FM-R) was 285 kDa, and the structure-sensitive parameter (ρ) value of FM-R was calculated as 1.3, suggesting that the FM-R molecule had a star-like conformation. The Mw of flaxseed kernel RG-I (FK-R) was 550 kDa, and the structure-sensitive parameter (ρ) values ranged from 0.90 to 1.21, suggesting a sphere to star-like conformation with relatively higher segment density. The correlation between the primary structure and conformation of RG-I was further discussed to better understand the structure–function relationship, which helps the scale-up applications of pectins in food, pharmaceutical, or cosmetic industries

    Technology Spillover Effect in China: The Spatiotemporal Evolution and Its Drivers

    Under the background of global economic integration, the technology spillover effect is playing a more and more important role in the technological progress of developing countries. In this circumstance, this paper conducted an in-depth analysis on the 12-year spatial-temporal evolution of the international technology spillover effect and its driving determinants in China during the period of 2003 to 2014. Analytical results highlighted that: (1) As a whole, the international technology spillover effect in general has shown an upward trend in China, except in 2008 and 2012, which are observed as deep-V plunge variations. The plunge in 2008 was more dramatic. After 2011, the growth rate of international technology spillover effect from international import trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) respects slowed obviously down. (2) The spatial distribution of the international technology spillover effect from FDI in China transferred from the ribbon-like pattern to the flake-like pattern, while the effect from import trade held steady with little difference in regional spatial distribution. (3) From the drivers, human capital, economic development, trade openness, and institutional factors promoted the technological spillover effect of import trade channels positively, and financial development, human capital, economic development, and institutional factors promoted the technological spillover effect of FDI channels positively
