Reversible electrowetting and trapping of charge: model and experiments
We derive a model for voltage-induced wetting, so-called electrowetting, from
the principle of virtual displacement. Our model includes the possibility that
charge is trapped in or on the wetted surface. Experimentally, we show
reversible electrowetting for an aqueous droplet on an insulating layer of 10
micrometer thickness. The insulator is coated with a highly fluorinated layer
impregnated with oil, providing a contact-angle hysteresis lower than 2
degrees. Analyzing the data with our model, we find that until a threshold
voltage of 240 V, the induced charge remains in the liquid and is not trapped.
For potentials beyond the threshold, the wetting force and the contact angle
saturate, in line with the occurrence of trapping of charge in or on the
insulating layer. The data are independent of the polarity of the applied
electric field, and of the ion type and molarity. We suggest possible

Experimental and theoretical porosity profiles in a two-dimensional gas-fluidized bed with a central jet
A light transmission technique has been developed for measurement of the local porosity in two-dimensional gas-fluidized beds. The principles of liquid-solid fluidization and vibrofluidization were employed to perform the necessary calibration. Time-averaged porosity profiles have been measured in a thin two-dimensional gas-fluidized bed with a central rectangular jet. These profiles were predicted satisfactorily with a previously developed first principles hydrodynamic model, without the use of any fitted parameters. Binding of small interfering RNA molecules is crucial for RNA interference suppressor activity of rice hoja blanca virus NS3 in plants
The NS3 protein of rice hoja blanca tenuivirus represents a viral suppressor of RNAi that sequesters small interfering (si)RNAs in vitro. To determine whether this siRNA binding property is the critical determinant for the suppressor activity of NS3, an alanine point mutational analysis was performed and the resulting mutant proteins were tested for both siRNA binding ability and RNAi suppressor activity in plants. Alanine substitutions of lysine residues at position 173-175 resulted in mutant proteins that lost both their affinity for siRNAs and their RNAi suppressor activity in planta. This indicates that siRNA binding of NS3 is indeed essential for the suppressor function of NS3 and that residues at position 173-175 are involved in the siRNA binding and suppressor activit
Virtual integration platform for computational fluid dynamics
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools used in shipbuilding industry involve multiple disciplines, such as resistance, manoeuvring, and cavitation. Traditionally, the analysis was performed separately and sequentially in each discipline, which often resulted in conflict and inconsistency of hydrodynamic prediction. In an effort to solve such problems for future CFD computations, a Virtual Integration Platform (VIP) has been developed in the University of Strathclyde within two EU FP6 projects - VIRTUE and SAFEDOR1. The VIP provides a holistic collaborative environment for designers with features such as Project/Process Management, Distributed Tools Integration, Global Optimisation, Version Management, and Knowledge Management. These features enhance collaboration among customers, ship design companies, shipyards, and consultancies not least because they bring together the best expertise and resources around the world. The platform has been tested in seven European ship design companies including consultancies. Its main functionalities along with advances are presented in this paper with two industrial applications

Precise Measurements of the Kilohertz Quasi-Periodic Oscillations in 4U 1728-34
We have analyzed seventeen observations of the low-mass X-ray binary and
atoll source 4U 1728-34, carried out by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer in 1996
and 1997. We obtain precise measurements of the frequencies of the two
simultaneous kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in this source.
We show that the frequency separation between the two QPO, , is
always significantly smaller than the frequency of the nearly-coherent
oscillations seen in this source during X-ray bursts, even at the lowest
inferred mass accretion rate, when seems to reach its maximum
value. We also find that decreases significantly, from Hz to Hz, as the frequency of the lower frequency kHz QPO
increases from 615 to 895 Hz. This is the first time that variations of the kHz
QPO peak separation are measured in a source which shows nearly-coherent
