Introduction: The Third International Conference on Epigenetic Robotics
This paper summarizes the paper and poster contributions
to the Third International Workshop on
Epigenetic Robotics. The focus of this workshop is
on the cross-disciplinary interaction of developmental
psychology and robotics. Namely, the general
goal in this area is to create robotic models of the
psychological development of various behaviors. The
term "epigenetic" is used in much the same sense as
the term "developmental" and while we could call
our topic "developmental robotics", developmental
robotics can be seen as having a broader interdisciplinary
emphasis. Our focus in this workshop is
on the interaction of developmental psychology and
robotics and we use the phrase "epigenetic robotics"
to capture this focus
Humanoid Theory Grounding
In this paper we consider the importance of using a humanoid physical form for a certain proposed kind of robotics, that of theory grounding. Theory grounding involves grounding the theory skills and knowledge of an embodied artificially intelligent (AI) system by developing theory skills and knowledge from the bottom up. Theory grounding can potentially occur in a variety of domains, and the particular domain considered here is that of language. Language is taken to be another Âproblem space in which a system can explore and discover solutions. We argue that because theory grounding necessitates robots experiencing domain information, certain behavioral-form aspects, such as abilities to socially smile, point, follow gaze, and generate manual gestures, are necessary for robots grounding a humanoid theory of language

Limitations on a Theory of the Biological Origins of Compositionality
Cohen and Eichenbaum (C&E, 1993) proposed that the hippocampus supports compositionality and inherently, flexible relational transfer of learning. Based on this proposal, rats were tested for symmetrical transfer of learning after training on relations between locations. Since a rat's hippocampus supports its spatial abilities, and since a relational test was being conducted, it was predicted that a strong degree of transfer would be obtained. The finding, however, was a general lack of relational transfer of learning. These results appear to limit the generality of C&E's theory and also seem to constrain the theory that the hippocampus is the biological seat of compositionality
Towards a Theory Grounded Theory of Language
In this paper, we build upon the idea of theory grounding and propose one specific form of theory grounding, a theory of language. Theory grounding is the idea that we can imbue our embodied artificially intelligent systems with theories by modeling the way humans, and specifically young children, develop skills with theories. Modeling theory development promises to increase the conceptual and behavioral flexibility of these systems. An example of theory development in children is the social understanding referred to as Âtheory of mind. Language is a natural task for theory grounding because it is vital in symbolic skills and apparently necessary in developing theories. Word learning, and specifically developing a concept of words, is proposed as the first step in a theory grounded theory of language
Taking Synchrony Seriously: A Perceptual-Level Model of Infant Synchrony Detection
Synchrony detection between different sensory and/or motor channels appears critically important for young infant learning and cognitive development. For example, empirical studies demonstrate that audio-visual synchrony aids in language acquisition. In this paper we compare these infant studies with a model of synchrony detection based on the Hershey and Movellan (2000) algorithm augmented with methods for quantitative synchrony estimation. Four infant-model comparisons are presented, using audio-visual stimuli of increasing complexity. While infants and the model showed learning or discrimination with each type of stimuli used, the model was most successful with stimuli comprised of one audio and one visual source, and also with two audio sources and a dynamic-face visual motion source. More difficult for the model were stimuli conditions with two motion sources, and more abstract visual dynamicsâan oscilloscope instead of a face. Future research should model the developmental pathway of synchrony detection. Normal audio-visual synchrony detection in infants may be experience-dependent (e.g., Bergeson, et al., 2004)
Individualism, collectivism, and emotion regulation: A cross-cultural examination among young adults from seven countries
Individualism and collectivism are dimensions of cultural variation thought to shape differences in emotion regulation tendencies, yet research to date has examined these cultural dimensions as country-level features, emphasizing variability across nations. The present study takes the approach of examining cultural differences within nations as predictors of emotion regulation strategies, shifting the perspective instead to individual differences. This present study aimed to address how individual endorsement of individualism-collectivism (i.e. prioritizing individual versus group goals) and vertical-horizontal attitudes (preference for hierarchy versus equality) are associated with use of emotion regulation strategies (i.e., reappraisal and suppression) among college students from seven countries (n=5,900; female=70.80%). Overall, we found that individual differences in individualism-collectivism and vertical-horizontal attitudes had strong connections with young adultsâ emotion regulation styles. Results of our multivariate (i.e., all variables were simultaneously examined) regression model revealed: a) higher endorsement of horizontal individualism and horizontal collectivism were associated with higher use of reappraisal strategies; b) higher endorsement of horizontal individualism and vertical collectivism were associated with higher use of suppression strategies; while higher endorsement of horizontal collectivism was associated with lower use of suppression strategies. A multi-group model supported the generalizability of these associations across countries. These findings demonstrate the value of approaching cultural differences in emotion regulation from an individual differences framework, and not assuming country-level differences are representative of individualsâ affective experiences. Further work is needed examining models within-country to examine cultural variation in individualism vs collectivism compared to country-level norms.Fil: Klein, Neelamberi D.. Factors influencing the awareness and adoption of borehole-garden permaculture in Malawi: Lessons for the promotion of sustainable practices
Using wastewater accumulating around rural waterpoints to irrigate community gardens,
borehole-garden permaculture (BGP) presents a method of sustainable water management. BGP also
presents public health benefits through the removal of stagnant water around boreholes, key Malaria
breeding grounds, and through providing year-round food to supplement diets. By analysing a
dataset of over 100,000 cases, this research examines the awareness and adoption of BGP across
Malawi. Generalised linear models identified significant variables influencing BGP awareness and
uptake revealing that socioeconomic, biophysical and waterpoint-specific variables influenced both
the awareness and adoption of BGP. BGP had low uptake in Malawi with only 2.4% of communities
surveyed practising BGP while 43.0% of communities were aware of BGP. Communities in areas
with unreliable rainfall and high malaria susceptibility had low BGP awareness despite BGP being
particularly beneficial to these communities

Preindustrial control simulations with HadGEM3-GC3.1 for CMIP6
Preâindustrial control simulations with the HadGEM3âGC3.1 climate model are presented at two resolutions. These are N216ORCA025, which has a horizontal resolution of 60km in the atmosphere and 0.25° in the ocean, and N96ORCA1, which has a horizontal resolution of 130km in the atmosphere and 1° in the ocean. The aim of this study is to document the climate variability in these simulations, make comparisons against presentâday observations (albeit under different forcing), and discuss differences arising due to resolution. In terms of interannual variability in the leading modes of climate variability the two resolutions behave generally very similarly. Notable differences are in the westward extent of ElâNiño and the pattern of Atlantic multidecadal variability, in which N216ORCA025 compares more favourably to observations, and in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, which is far too weak in N216ORCA025. In the North Atlantic region, N216ORCA025 has a stronger and deeper AMOC, which compares well against observations, and reduced biases in temperature and salinity in the North Atlantic subpolar gyre (NA SPG). These simulations are being provided to the sixth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) and provide a baseline against which further forced experiments may be assessed
