The ELM Survey. III. A Successful Targeted Survey for Extremely Low Mass White Dwarfs
Extremely low mass (ELM) white dwarfs (WDs) with masses <0.25 Msun are rare
objects that result from compact binary evolution. Here, we present a targeted
spectroscopic survey of ELM WD candidates selected by color. The survey is 71%
complete and has uncovered 18 new ELM WDs. Of the 7 ELM WDs with follow-up
observations, 6 are short-period binaries and 4 have merger times less than 5
Gyr. The most intriguing object, J1741+6526, likely has either a pulsar
companion or a massive WD companion making the system a possible supernova Type
Ia or .Ia progenitor. The overall ELM Survey has now identified 19 double
degenerate binaries with <10 Gyr merger times. The significant absence of short
orbital period ELM WDs at cool temperatures suggests that common envelope
evolution creates ELM WDs directly in short period systems. At least one-third
of the merging systems are halo objects, thus ELM WD binaries continue to form
and merge in both the disk and the halo.Comment: 10 pages, accepted to Ap
History and being of the eborian female conventual spaces: an approach to the analysis of its adaptations, uses and transformations
The conventual city of Évora stands out in the Portuguese ecclesiastical panorama for the fate of its
old convent buildings. Secularized since 1834, only the female convents continued with their
religious use for seventy years, a situation that will lead to the readaptation and reuse of their
conventual spaces.
In this article, we will analyse the current situation of the Evora’s convents, focusing mainly on
female convents, in order to determine if the reuse of the building has changed or not its original
conventual structure and its heritage values.
The analysis carried out has shown that, in some instances that we detail in the study, the functional
coherence of its spaces has been transformed, as well as its architectural configuration.
Growing Up With Terrorism: The Age at Which a Terrorist Attack Was Suffered and Emotional Disorders in Adulthood
Abundant scientific literature shows that exposure to traumatic situations during childhood or adolescence has long-term psychopathological consequences, for example, in the form of a higher prevalence of emotional disorders in adulthood. However, an evolutionary perspective suggests that there may be differential vulnerabilities depending on the age at which the trauma was suffered. As there are no studies on the psychopathological impact in adulthood of attacks suffered during childhood or adolescence, the objective of this study was to analyze the influence of the age at which a terrorist attack was suffered in the presence of emotional disorders many years after the attack. A sample of 566 direct and indirect victims of terrorist attacks in Spain was recruited, of whom 50 people were between the age of 3 and 9 when they suffered the attack, 46 were between 10 and 17 years old, and 470 were adults. All of them underwent a structured diagnostic interview (SCID-I-VC) an average of 21 years after the attacks. No significant differences were found between the three age groups at which the attack occurred in terms of the current prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder, major depressive disorder, or anxiety disorders. The results of several multiple binary logistic regression analyses also indicated that, after controlling for the effect of sex, current age, the type of victims, and the time since the attack, the age at which the attack was suffered was not related to the current prevalence of those emotional disorders. The results are discussed concerning the differences between various types of trauma and in the context of the theories that propose that traumatic experiences are processed differently at different ages and can lead to differences in the likelihood of developing different emotional disorders
Cytomolecular identification of individual wheat-wheat chromosome arm associations in wheat-rye hybrids
Chromosome pairing in the meiotic metaphase I of wheatrye
hybrids has been characterized by sequential genomic
and fluorescent in situ hybridization allowing not only the
discrimination of wheat and rye chromosomes, but also the
identification of the individual wheat and rye chromosome
arms involved in the chromosome associations. The majority
of associations (93.8%) were observed between the wheat
chromosomes. The largest number of wheat-wheat chromosome
associations (53%) was detected between the A and D
genomes, while the frequency of B-D and A-B associations
was significantly lower (32 and 8%, respectively). Among the
A-D chromosome associations, pairing between the 3AL and
3DL arms was observed with the highest frequency, while
the most frequent of all the chromosome associations (0.113/
cell) was found to be the 3DS-3BS. Differences in the pairing
frequency of the individual chromosome arms of wheat-rye
hybrids have been discussed in relation to the homoeologous
relationships between the constituent genomes of
hexaploid wheat
Ancient trees abundance has been compared with distribution of threatened forest vertebrate species at the province of Salamanca (Spain). A significant correlation between both parameters has been observed for the following considered species: imperial eagle (<em>Aquila adalberti</em>), black vulture (<em>Aegypus monachus</em>), iberian lynx (<em>Lynx pardinus</em>), red kite (<em>Milvus milvus</em>) and a group of forest bats (<em>Miniopterus schreibersii, Myotis bechsteinii, Myotis emarginatus, Myotis mystacinus, Myotis myotis, Nyctalus lasiopterus, Nyctalus noctula, Rhinolophus euryale, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum</em> y <em>Rhinolophus mehelyi</em>). It has been proved that there is an increase of threatened forest vertebrates biodiversity along with increasing ancient trees density at the municipalities of the province.
Historical legacies of river pollution reconstructed from fish scales
Many rivers have been impacted by heavy metal pollution in the past but the long-term legacies on biodiversity are difficult to estimate. The River Ulla (NW Spain) was impacted by tailings from a copper mine during the 1970-1980s but absence of baseline values and lack of subsequent monitoring have prevented a full impact assessment. We used archived fish scales of Atlantic salmon to reconstruct levels of historical copper pollution and its effects on salmon fitness. Copper bioaccumulation significantly increased over baseline values during the operation of the mine, reaching sublethal levels for salmon survival. Juvenile growth and relative population abundance decreased during mining, but no such effects were observed in a neighbouring river unaffected by mining. Our results indicate that historical copper exposure has probably compromised the fitness of this Atlantic salmon population to the present day, and that fish scales are suitable biomarkers of past river pollution
