Entre retórica profranquista y xenofobia suiza: el populista James Schwarzenbach

Swiss journalist, writer, and politician James Schwarzenbach (1911-1994) is a controversial figure of Swiss 20th Century history. A fervid anti-Communist and Catholic, he fought in the 1960s and 70s for a massive reduction of immigrants living in Switzerland. Schwarzenbach was also a deep admirer of General Franco and built friendships with several important people of the Spanish regime. The present article aims to point out his Spanish passion and his contradiction between his admiration of a regime, which economically depended from the emigration of manpower, and Schwarzenbach’s policy against immigration in Switzerland

Between 1973 and 2003 Swiss television used to broadcast at the weekend the biweekly news magazine Tele-revista, which lasted 15 minutes. Tele-revista was sent in Spanish and addressed to Spanish migrants living in Switzerland. It contained reportages about the Spanish community’s reality. This paper focuses first on the image and the staging of the Spanish administration’s institutional power in Switzerland and its evolution in the course of time. Then it will consider the efforts to educate the audience in matters of democracy and liberties in Switzerland. Finally it will treat the increasing presence in the magazine’s cultural section of the characteristics and the relation between popular and high culture

Urinary transferrin pre-emptively identifies the risk of renal damage posed by subclinical tubular alterations

Nephrotoxicity is an important limitation to the clinical use of many drugs and contrast media. Drug nephrotoxicity occurs in acute, subacute and chronic manifestations ranging from glomerular, tubular, vascular and immunological phenotypes to acute kidney injury. Pre-emptive risk assessment of drug nephrotoxicity poses an urgent need of precision medicine to optimize pharmacological therapies and interventional procedures involving nephrotoxic products in a preventive and personalized manner. Biomarkers of risk have been identified in animal models, and risk scores have been proposed, whose clinical use is abated by their reduced applicability to specific etiological models or clinical circumstances. However, our present data suggest that the urinary level of transferrin may be indicative of risk of renal damage, where risk is induced by subclinical tubular alterations regardless of etiology. In fact, urinary transferrin pre-emptively correlates with the subsequent renal damage in animal models in which risk has been induced by drugs and toxins affecting the renal tubules (i.e. cisplatin, gentamicin and uranyl nitrate); whereas transferrin shows no relation with the risk posed by a drug affecting renal hemodynamics (i.e. cyclosporine A). Our experiments also show that transferrin increases in the urine in the risk state (i.e. prior to the damage) precisely as a consequence of reduced tubular reabsorption. Finally, urinary transferrin pre-emptively identifies subpopulations of oncological and cardiac patients at risk of nephrotoxicity. In perspective, urinary transferrin might be further explored as a wider biomarker of an important mechanism of predisposition to renal damage induced by insults causing subclinical tubular alterations.Research from the authors’ laboratory supporting part of the information incorporated into this article was funded by grants from Instituto de Salud Carlos III (PI14/01776, DT15S/00166, PI15/01055 and PI17/01979, and Retic RD016/0009/0025, REDINREN), Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (IPT-2012-0779-010000), Junta de Castilla y León (Consejería de Sanidad, BIO/SA20/14, BIO/SA66/15; and Consejería de Educación, SA359U14), and FEDER funds

The aim of this study is to show the ranges of normality for soccer players in different categories evaluated by Y-Balance-Test (YBT). A total of 173 soccer players were evaluated and grouped in 5 different categories (U16: n= 48; age= 14.18 ± 2.02 age; U19: n= 62; age = 18.20 ± 2.04 age; Third Division: n = 21; age = 25.42 ± 4.52 age; Second Division B: n = 19; age = 25.68 ± 3.00 age; First Division: n = 23; age = 32.91 ± 3.04 age) according to their specific positions (goalkeeper, full backs, central defenders, center midfielders, wingers, and center forwards). The results of this research consist in the means and standard deviation for the YBT, with the purpose of explaining the standardized reach (dominant and non-dominant legs) and asymmetries between limbs (average ± DE; Total d» ± 4 and % of the total in cm). While the nature of this study is purely observational, an increase in the scores for all the measurements can be noted from lower to higher categories. At all categories, center forwards present a deficit in the posteromedial movement (PM), whereas center midfielder from U16 and U19 is the position with the highest deficits. The knowledge of the YBT scores is essential to understand with greater precision how categories influence the asymmetries, and consequently to create more effective preventive programs

High efficacy of Sofosbuvir plus Simeprevir in a large cohort of Spanish cirrhotic patients infected with genotypes 1 and 4

[Abstract] Background and Aims. Hepatitis C (HCV) therapy with Sofosbuvir (SOF)/Simeprevir (SMV) in clinical trials and real‐world clinical practice, showed high rates of sustained virological response (SVR) in non‐cirrhotic genotype (GT)‐1 and GT‐4 patients. These results were slightly lower in cirrhotic patients. We investigated real‐life effectiveness and safety of SOF/SMV with or without ribavirin (RBV) in a large cohort of cirrhotic patients. Methods. This collaborative multicentre study included data from 968 patients with cirrhosis infected with HCV‐GT1 or 4, treated with SOF/SMV±RBV in 30 centres across Spain between January‐2014 and December‐2015. Demographic, clinical, virological and safety data were analysed. Results. Overall SVR was 92.3%; the majority of patients were treated with RBV (62%) for 12 weeks (92.4%). No significant differences in SVR were observed between genotypes (GT1a:94.3%; GT1b:91.7%; GT4:91.1%). Those patients with more advanced liver disease (Child B/C, MELD≥10) or portal hypertension (platelet count≤100×109/L, transient elastography≥21 Kpa) showed significantly lower SVR rates (84.4%‐91.9%) than patients with less advanced liver disease (93.8%‐95.9%, P<.01 in all cases). In the multivariate analysis, the use of RBV, female gender, baseline albumin≥35 g/L, MELD<10 and lack of exposure to a triple therapy regimen were independent predictors of SVR (P<.05). Serious adverse events (SAEs) and SAE‐associated discontinuation events occurred in 5.9% and 2.6%. Conclusions. In this large cohort of cirrhotic patients managed in the real‐world setting in Spain, SOF/SMV±RBV yielded to excellent SVR rates, especially in patients with compensated liver cirrhosis. In addition, this combination showed to be safe, with low rates of SAEs and early discontinuations.Instituto de Salud Carlos III; PI15/0015

Antifranchismo e protezione dello Stato in Svizzera

Anti-Francoism and state protection in Switzerland Social unrest in late-Francoist Spain brought about an intensification of the regime’s repressive action. In order to watch over the allegedly subversive activities of its citizens and minimize the risk of the Communist threat, even democratic Switzerland did not hesitate in using its State Protection Police (Staatsschutz) to keep an eye on people and groups that openly expressed their opposition to the Francoist regime in Switzerland
