    Seishin Habitus: Spiritual Capital and Japanese Rowing

    Sport occupies an important place in educational curriculum, such as club activities in Japanese schools and universities; is it also imbued with what Bourdieu suggests are guaranteed capital properties? That is, can physical education help to accrue capital and can such capital become cultural and economic capital? Further, is this capital similar to that resulting from academic education? Although Western culture recognizes Cartesian differentiation, mind and body are seen as one in the Japanese understanding of the individual, unified by the concept of spirit (this is different to the concept of soul). Recognizing this concept of the body is crucial in addressing the question of transferring educational (in this case physical) capital into forms of cultural capital. This paper investigates the responses of members of a Japanese University Rowing club when addressing questions dealing with various uses of the body in rowing and perceived opportunities for future employment

    Remarks on the identification of the Albian/Cenomanian boundary and taxonomic clarification of the planktonic foraminifera index species globotruncanoides, brotzeni and tehamaensis

    The planktonic foraminifera assemblage across the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Cenomanian Stage defined at Mont Risou (Haute-Alpes in France) is here restudied to clarify the identification and stratigraphic distribution of Thalmanninella globotruncanoides ( = Rotalipora globotruncanoides Sigal, 1948) and Pseudothalmanninella tehamaensis ( = Rotalipora tehamaensis Marianos & Zingula, 1966) whose appearance levels are primary and secondary criteria for placing the Albian/Cenomanian boundary. Since the ratification of the GSSP in 2002, the identification of the foraminifera index species across the Albian/Cenomanian boundary has been reported to be sometimes difficult either because of their rarity or uncertainty in the taxonomic identifications. We discuss the taxonomic status of Thalmanninella brotzeni Sigal 1948, a species regarded for a long time to be a junior synonym of Th. globotruncanoides, through images of Sigal's type materials deposited at the Musée National d’Histoire Naturelle (Paris), and elucidate the taxonomically important characters that enable unequivocal identification of Th. brotzeni, Th. globotruncanoides and Ps. tehamaensis. Planktonic foraminifera marker species from Mont Risou are compared with well-preserved specimens from Blake Nose Plateau (ODP 171B, North Western Atlantic Ocean) to verify the reliability and stratigraphic distribution of these marker taxa outside the Mediterranean Tethyan area

    THE MIDDLE EOCENE IN THE ALPINE RETROFORELAND BASIN (NORTHERN ITALY): SEDIMENTARY RECORD OF A “MESO-ALPINE” ARC-TRENCH SYSTEM IN THE ALPS

    The middle Eocene Cibrone Formation of Brianza (central-western Lombardy) represents an important stratigraphic record to understand a key step of the tectonic evolution of the Alpine range poorly recorded elsewhere. Quantitative petrographic analysis of turbidite arenites, well-constrained in age by the biostratigraphy of interlayered marlstones based on calcareous foraminifera and nannoplankton, allowed us to identify a possible vertical compositional trend within the Cibrone Fm. and to document the NP17 nannofossil Zone (Bartonian) in central Lombardy exposures, east of the Ternate Formation outcrop area. Variable arenite compositions are interpreted to reflect contributions from different source areas, i.e., recycled orogen, island arc, and starved continental shelf. In a paleogeographic scenario still open to different interpretations, the proposed reconstruction supports a classical plate tectonics model for arc-trench systems. The stratigraphic gap, recorded everywhere in Lombardy, between the Eocene succession and the base of the Gonfolite Lombarda Group (upper NP24 nannofossil Zone, early Chattian), corresponds to the earliest stage of continental collision, uplift and erosion that climaxed in the Neo-Alpine Phase

    The Monte Orfano Conglomerate revisited: stratigraphic constraints on Cenozoic tectonic uplift of the Southern Alps (Lombardy, northern Italy)

    The Monte Orfano Conglomerate (MOC), exposed in the foothills of the Southern Alps (northern Italy), is one of the few outcrops of sediments documenting the Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the Alpine retrowedge. Calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy allowed us to constrain the upper part of the MOC, formerly attributed to the Early-Middle Miocene in the type-locality, to the earliest Miocene (Neogene part of the NN1 nannofossil zone). A likely latest Oligocene age is therefore suggested for the bulk of the underlying conglomerates, whose base is not exposed. Deposition of the MOC can be framed into the post-collisional tectonic uplift of the Alps, documented in the Lake Como area by the Como Conglomerate (CC) at the base of the Gonfolite Lombarda Group, and supports the correlation with Upper Oligocene clastic sediments cropping out further to the East, in the Lake Garda and in the Veneto-Friuli areas (“molassa”). The remarkable difference in petrographic composition between the western (CC) and eastern (MOC) clastics deposited in the Alpine retro-foreland basin highlights the synchronous tectonic activity of two structural domains involving different crustal levels. Whilst the bulk of the CC, that straddles the Oligocene/Miocene boundary, records the tectonic exhumation of the Alpine axial chain crystalline complexes, the coeval MOC consists of detritus deriving from the Alpine retrowedge superficial crustal section (Triassic to Paleogene sedimentary rocks), and constrains the onset of the post-collisional deformation phase of the Southern Alps as not younger than the latest Oligocene

    Halitosis, reduced salivary flow and the quality of life in pre-kidney transplantation patients

    Halitosis is a condition that affects 50% of adults and one third of patients with chronic kidney disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate oral manifestations and volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) associated with halitosis and quality of life in pre-kidney transplantation candidates. The organoleptic test (OT) and halimetry (HA) (before and after cysteine mouthwash) were performed in patients with the Oralchroma® device, stimulated (SE) and non-stimulated sialometry (SN), Tongue Coating Index (TCI). The OHIP-14 questionnaire was administered to assess the impact of oral health on quality of life. Fourteen individuals with a mean age of 49.64 ± 13.35 years were evaluated. In the organoleptic test, 57.14% of the individuals presented halitosis. Oralchroma results showed that dimethyl sulfide was above the threshold in 85.71% of the individuals, while hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan were above threshold in 28.57%; after the use of cysteine, hydrogen sulfide was present in 100% of the cases, dimethyl sulfide in 57.14% and methyl mercaptan in 50%. In the non-stimulated sialometry, 57.14% of the individuals presented hyposalivation and 21.42% in the stimulated. Regarding the tongue coating index, 100% of the individuals presented tongue coating, with a mean of 7.64. The assessment of impact of oral health on quality of life showed a negative impact in all dimensions. Tongue coating, in association with hydrogen sulfide, was the main cause of halitosis in the study subjects, and hyposalivation may contribute to higher tongue-coating indices. These oral changes negatively affect the quality of life for pre-kidney transplantation patients

    Trabalho apresentado no 31º SEURS - Seminário de Extensão Universitária da Região Sul, realizado em Florianópolis, SC, no período de 04 a 07 de agosto de 2013 - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina.As alterações por que passa uma sociedade determinam variações nas relações sociais e, podem gerar novos modelos culturais, entre eles a tecnológica que está atrelada a possibilidade de o sujeito agir a partir de um saber do qual ele se apropria, tornando-se um cidadão competente. É nessa perspectiva que o Programa Químico na Educação conta com três projetos: Portal da Química, Química no Ensino Fundamental e Materiais Didático-pedagógicos para o Ensino de Química. O objetivo geral do Programa é colaborar na promoção de melhorias na qualidade do ensino de Ciências e de Química nos distintos níveis de aprendizagem. O Portal é um apoio ao ambiente acadêmico, capaz de adicionar serviços, informações e ser intercâmbio entre alunos, professores e sociedade. Os Materiais didático-pedagógicos possibilitam maior acesso dos estudantes a novas ferramentas educacionais. Na Química no Ensino Fundamental estão sendo desenvolvidas metodologias de ensino-aprendizagem e atividades experimentais adaptados às dimensões da criança e do adolescente e ao desenvolvimento da autonomia e das habilidades científicas com alunos do 9º ano em três escolas públicas. Quanto a metodologia, cada projeto tem suas especificidades: visitas à instituições envolvidas; desenvolvimento de atividades pedagógicas; aplicação de aulas práticas com materiais do cotidiano; experimentos de baixo custos; confecção e divulgação de materiais digitais como tabelas de dicas, apostila, vídeo-aulas abrangendo professores e alunos de todos os níveis; manutenção do Portal; administração dos alunos responsáveis pela publicação e criação desses conteúdos. Os resultados são parciais, pois o programa tem período de finalização previsto para dezembro de 2013. Em relação aos materiais didático-pedagógicos já confeccionamos XXXX jogos que estão a disposição no Laboratório de Psicologia da Educação da UDESC/CCT. O portal da química já conta com mais de 23 mil acessos. Alguns de regiões como Estados Unidos, Portugal e Angola. Desses acessos os conteúdos mais procurados são artigos, curiosidades e definições

    PL 504/2020: corpos representados e publicidade sob as égides do panóptico, da disciplina e da docilidade

    O presente artigo tem o intuito de analisar o Projeto de Lei no 504 de 2020 da Assembleia Legislativa do Estado São Paulo, proposto pela deputada Marta Costa, através das categorias foucaultianas de panoptismo, disciplina e docilidade, uma vez que o projeto propõe a proibição da circulação de publicidades com alusão à diversidade de gênero e orientação sexual, relacionados a crianças. Decerto, o conceito de modelo panóptico de poder foi utilizado como base na análise do projeto de lei, sob a perspectiva do controle de concepções que a sociedade relaciona às identidades de gênero e orientações sexuais diversas através da publicidade. Busca-se, portanto, compreender como a legislação incorpora tal publicidade como uma forma de disciplinaridade, com base nos valores da normalidade e anormalidade reguladas pelas instituições de poder. Ademais, o corpo é alvo desses poderes disciplinares, que têm como objetivo fabricar corpos dóceis e submissos sujeitos à imposição de limites, proibições e obrigações, a partir de uma política das coerções. Desse modo, os corpos são introduzidos em uma anatomia política da docilidade, que por intermédio da publicidade aplica técnicas da governamentalidade e da biopolítica, a fim de dominar e produzir eficácias e comportamentos dentro da hetero-cis-normatividade

    Taxonomy, biostratigraphy, and phylogeny of Oligocene and early Miocene Paragloborotalia and Parasubbotina

    The taxonomy, phylogeny, and biostratigraphy of Oligocene and early Miocene Paragloborotalia and Parasubbotina are reviewed. The two genera are closely related; Paragloborotalia was derived from Parasubbotina in the early Eocene. Parasubbotina was more diverse during the middle Eocene, while Paragloborotalia experienced considerable diversification during the mid-Oligocene and in the latest Oligocene-earliest Miocene. A significant finding has been the synonymization of Globorotalia (Tuborotalia) mendacis Blow, and Turborotalia primitiva Brӧnnimann and Resig with Globorotalia birnageae Blow. The following species from the time interval of interest are regarded as valid: Paragloborotalia acrostoma (Wezel), Paragloborotalia birnageae (Blow), Paragloborotalia continuosa (Blow), Paragloborotalia incognita (Walters) Paragloborotalia kugleri (Bolli), Paragloborotalia mayeri (Cushman and Ellisor), Paragloborotalia nana (Bolli), Paragloborotalia opima (Bolli), Paragloborotalia pseudocontinuosa (Jenkins), Paragloborotalia pseudokugleri (Blow), Paragloborotalia semivera (Hornibrook), Paragloborotalia siakensis (LeRoy), Parasubbotina hagni (Gohrbandt), and Parasubbotina varianta (Subbotina). Paragloborotalia is a long-lived group of planktonic foraminifera that spanned the early Eocene to late Miocene and provided the root stock for the evolution of multiple smooth, nonspinose, and keeled globorotaliid lineages during the Neogene. The early Oligocene forms of Paragloborotalia (nana, opima, siakensis, pseudocontinuosa) have 4 or 5 globular chambers in the final whorl with radial spiral sutures and a broadly rounded periphery. A trend from radial to curved spiral sutures is observed in late Oligocene and earliest Miocene lineages. Most species of Paragloborotalia had wide distributions, but some were more common in tropical to warm subtropical waters (e.g., siakensis, kugleri) and were especially dominant in the equatorial Pacific divergence zone (e.g., nana, opima, and pseudocontinuosa) analogous to modern tropical upwelling Neogloboquadrina. Other species thrived in cool subtropical and temperate waters (e.g., acrostoma, incognita)
