Conclusions

BirdNet+: two-stage 3D object detection in LiDAR through a sparsity-invariant bird's eye view
Autonomous navigation relies upon an accurate understanding of the elements in the surroundings. Among the different on-board perception tasks, 3D object detection allows the identification of dynamic objects that cannot be registered by maps, being key for safe navigation. Thus, it often requires the use of LiDAR data, which is able to faithfully represent the scene geometry. However, although raw laser point clouds contain rich features to perform object detection, more compact representations such as the bird's eye view (BEV) projection are usually preferred in order to meet the time requirements of the control loop. This paper presents an end-to-end object detection network based on the well-known Faster R-CNN architecture that uses BEV images as input to produce the final 3D boxes. Our regression branches can infer not only the axis-aligned bounding boxes but also the rotation angle, height, and elevation of the objects in the scene. The proposed network provides state-of-the-art results for car, pedestrian, and cyclist detection with a single forward pass when evaluated on the KITTI 3D Object Detection Benchmark, with an accuracy that exceeds 64% mAP 3D for the Moderate difficulty. Further experiments on the challenging nuScenes dataset show the generalizability of both the method and the proposed BEV representation against different LiDAR devices and across a wider set of object categories by being able to reach more than 30% mAP with a single LiDAR sweep and almost 40% mAP with the usual 10-sweep accumulation. This work was supported in part by the Government of Madrid (Comunidad de Madrid) under the Multiannual Agreement with the University Carlos III of Madrid (UC3M) in the line of "Fostering Young Doctors Research"(PEAVAUTO-CM-UC3M), and in part by the Context of the V Regional Programme of Research and Technological Innovation (PRICIT)
Photoacoustic effect measurement in aqueous suspensions of gold nanorods caused by low-frequency and low-power near-infrared pulsing laser irradiation
When aqueous suspensions of gold nanorods are irradiated with a pulsing laser (808 nm), pressure waves appear even at low frequencies (pulse repetition rate of 25 kHz). We found that the pressure wave amplitude depends on the dynamics of the phenomenon. For fixed concentration and average laser current intensity, the amplitude of the pressure waves shows a trend of increasing with the pulse slope and the pulse maximum amplitude. We postulate that the detected ultrasonic pressure waves are a sort of shock waves that would be generated at the beginning of each pulse, because the pressure wave amplitude would be the result of the positive interference of all the individual shock waves
Suppressors of Cytokine Signaling 3 Expression in Eosinophils: Regulation by PGE2 and Th2 Cytokines
Asthma and nonasthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis (NAEB) are respiratory disorders characterized by a predominance of Th2 cells and eosinophilic inflammation. Suppressors of cytokine signaling (SOCS) proteins play an important role in Th2-mediated allergic responses through control of the balance between Th1 and Th2 cells, particularly, SOCS3 and SOCS5. The aim of this study was to analyze SOCS expression in human peripheral blood eosinophils from patients with asthma, NAEB and healthy controls. SOCS expression in eosinophils from subjects was demonstrated by different techniques. Results showed that expression of SOCS3 in eosinophils and CD4 T cells from patients was higher than in healthy subjects. In addition, we demonstrated that prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and Th2 cytokines are able to upregulate SOCS3 production in eosinophils and attenuate its degranulation. In conclusion, eosinophils are able to transcribe and translate SOCS3 protein and can contribute to the regulation of the Th1/Th2 balance through SOCS3 production
A method for synthetic LiDAR generation to create annotated datasets for autonomous vehicles perception
Proceedings of: 2019 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference (ITSC)LiDAR devices have become a key sensor for autonomous vehicles perception due to their ability to capture reliable geometry information. Indeed, approaches processing LiDAR data have shown an impressive accuracy for 3D object detection tasks, outperforming methods solely based on image inputs. However, the wide diversity of on-board sensor configurations makes the deployment of published algorithms into real platforms a hard task, due to the scarcity of annotated datasets containing laser scans. We present a method to generate new point clouds datasets as captured by a real LiDAR device. The proposed pipeline makes use of multiple frames to perform an accurate 3D reconstruction of the scene in the spherical coordinates system that enables the simulation of the sweeps of a virtual LiDAR sensor, configurable both in location and inner specifications. The similarity between real data and the generated synthetic clouds is assessed through a set of experiments performed using KITTI Depth and Object Benchmarks.Research supported by the Spanish Government through the CICYT projects (TRA2016-78886-C3-1-R and RTI2018-096036-B-C21), and the Comunidad de Madrid through SEGVAUTO-4.0-CM (P2018/EMT-4362). Long-term prognostic impact of anticoagulation on patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing hemodialysis
Introduction and objectives: Evidence for the efficacy and safety of oral anticoagulation with dicumarines in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) on hemodialysis is controversial. The aim of our study is to evaluate the long-term prognostic implications of anticoagulation with dicumarines in a cohort of patients with non-valvular AF on a hemodialysis program due to end-stage renal disease. Methods: Retrospective, observational study with consecutive inclusion of 74 patients with AF on hemodialysis. The inclusion period was from January 2005 to October 2016. The primary variables were all-cause mortality, non-scheduled readmissions and bleeding during follow-up. Results: Mean age was 75 ± 10 years; 66.2% were men and 43 patients (58.1%) received acenocoumarol. During a median follow-up of 2.40 years (IQR = 0.88-4.15), acenocoumarol showed no survival benefit [HR = 0.76, 95% CI (0.35-1.66), p = 0.494]. However, anticoagulated patients were at increased risk of recurrent cardiovascular hospitalizations [IRR = 3.94, 95% CI (1.06-14.69), p = 0.041]. There was a trend towards an increase in repeated hospitalizations of ischemic cause in anticoagulated patients [IRR = 5.80, 95% CI (0.86-39.0), p = 0.071]. There was a statistical trend towards a higher risk of recurrent total bleeding in patients treated with acenocoumarol [IRR = 4.43, 95% CI (0.94-20.81), p = 0.059]. Conclusions: In this study, oral anticoagulation with acenocoumarol in patients with AF on hemodialysis did not increase survival. However, it was associated with an increased risk of hospitalizations of cardiovascular causes and a tendency to an increased risk of total bleeding
A Parasite Biomarker Set for Evaluating Benznidazole Treatment Efficacy in Patients with Chronic Asymptomatic Trypanosoma cruzi Infection
One of the current greatest challenges of Chagas disease is the establishment of biomarkers to assess the efficacy of drugs in a short period of time. In this context, the reactivity of sera from 66 adults with chronic indeterminate Chagas disease (IND) for a set of four Trypanosoma cruzi antigens (KMP11, PFR2, HSP70, and 3973d) was analyzed before and after benznidazole treatment. The results showed that the reactivity against these antigens decreased at 9, 24, and 48 months after treatment. Moreover, the 42.4% and 68.75% of IND patients met the established standard criteria of therapeutic efficacy (STEC) at 24 and 48 months posttreatment, respectively. Meeting the STEC implied that there was a continuous decrease in the reactivity of the patient sera against the four antigens after treatment and that there was a substantial decrease in the reactivity for at least two of the antigens. This important decrease in reactivity may be associated with a drastic reduction in the parasite load, but it is not necessarily associated with a parasitological cure. After treatment, a positive PCR result was only obtained in patients who did not meet the STEC. The percentage of granzyme B+/perforin+ CD8+ T cells was significantly higher in patients who met the STEC than in those who did not meet the STEC (35.2% versus 2.2%; P < 0.05). Furthermore, the patients who met the STEC exhibited an increased quality of the multifunctional response of the antigen-specific CD8+ T cells compared with that in the patients who did not meet the STE
An All-Organic Flexible Visible Light Communication System
Visible light communication systems can be used in a wide variety of applications, from driving to home automation. The use of wearables can increase the potential applications in indoor systems to send and receive specific and customized information. We have designed and developed a fully organic and flexible Visible Light Communication system using a flexible OLED, a flexible P3HT:PCBM-based organic photodiode (OPD) and flexible PCBs for the emitter and receiver conditioning circuits. We have fabricated and characterized the I-V curve, modulation response and impedance of the flexible OPD. As emitter we have used a commercial flexible organic luminaire with dimensions 99 × 99 × 0.88 mm, and we have characterized its modulation response. All the devices show frequency responses that allow operation over 40 kHz, thus enabling the transmission of high quality audio. Finally, we integrated the emitter and receiver components and its electronic drivers, to build an all-organic flexible VLC system capable of transmitting an audio file in real-time, as a proof of concept of the indoor capabilities of such a system. This Project was funded by Comunidad de Madrid through the SINFOTON-CM Research Program
