    Sinusitis and oroantral fistula in patients with bisphosphonate-associated necrosis of the maxilla

    BACKGROUND: The management of bisphosphonate related necrosis of the jaw has become clinical routine. While approximately two thirds of the lesions are in the mandible, one third is located in the maxilla. In 40–50 % of maxillary necrosis the maxillary sinus is involved, leading to maxillary sinusitis and oro-antral communications. METHODS: This retrospective single center study includes all patients with diagnosis of BP-ONJ of the maxilla and concomitant maxillary sinusitis. The information collected includes age, gender, primary disease, bisphosphonate intake, involving type of bisphosphonate, route of administration and duration of BP treatment previous to surgical treatment and treatment outcome. RESULTS: A total of 12 patients fulfill the criteria of the diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis associated to maxillary necrosis, of which 6 Patients showed purulent sinusitis. All patients underwent surgical treatment with complete resection of the affected bone and a multilayer wound closure. A recurrence appeared in one patient with open bone and no sign of sinusitis and was treated conservatively. CONCLUSIONS: Purulent maxillary Sinusitis is a common complication of bisphosphonate-related necrosis of the maxilla. The surgical technique described can be suggested for the treatment of these patients

    Effect of ethephon and irrigation deficit on color enhancement of Vitis vinifera L. as determined by anthocyanin content of wine

    1999 Fall.Covers not scanned.Includes bibliographical references.Three experiments were performed on Colorado grown grapevines to test irrigation deficit and/or ethephon application on the color enhancement of red wines. In the first experiment, drip irrigated Pinot noir vines were exposed to an irrigation deficit in the second half of the growing season. Vine water potential was monitored with a pressure bomb, and resulting wines were analyzed spectrophotometrically for anthocyanin content. No significant increase in anthocyanins was found between the wines from the control and treatment groups. The second experiment used Sangiovese grapevines to test the application of a 750 ppm ethephon spray at eight weeks and nine weeks post anthesis against a control. Spectrophotometric analysis of the wines showed significant increases in anthocyanin content of 16.7% and 41.7% above the control for the eight and nine week post anthesis applications, respectively. The third experiment utilized furrow irrigated Pinot noir vines to test the effects of ethephon on vines subjected to a late season water deficit. A pressure bomb was used to monitor vine water potential, a neutron probe was used to monitor soil moisture, and the wines were analyzed spectrophotometrically. A significant increase in anthocyanin content was found due to the ethephon application at nine weeks post anthesis to the vines subjected to the water stress. A final experiment was conducted to observe the differences in color between Pinot noir and Merlot wines from different Colorado wineries. In addition, the color variation between different cultivars of wines from the Orchard Mesa Research Center was also investigated. Significant differences were found between the Pinot noir wines as well as the Merlot wines, and between the various cultivars analyzed

    Storage oil hydrolysis during early seedling growth

    Storage oil breakdown plays an important role in the life cycle of many plants by providing the carbon skeletons that support seedling growth immediately following germination. This metabolic process is initiated by lipases (EC: 3.1.1.3), which catalyze the hydrolysis of triacylglycerols (TAGs) to release free fatty acids and glycerol. A number of lipases have been purified to near homogeneity from seed tissues and analysed for their in vitro activities. Furthermore, several genes encoding lipases have been cloned and characterised from plants. However, only recently has data been presented to establish the molecular identity of a lipase that has been shown to be required for TAG breakdown in seeds. In this review we briefly outline the processes of TAG synthesis and breakdown. We then discuss some of the biochemical literature on seed lipases and describe the cloning and characterisation of a lipase called SUGAR-DEPENDENT1, which is required for TAG breakdown in Arabidopsis thaliana seeds

    Comparative genomics of Cluster O mycobacteriophages

    Mycobacteriophages - viruses of mycobacterial hosts - are genetically diverse but morphologically are all classified in the Caudovirales with double-stranded DNA and tails. We describe here a group of five closely related mycobacteriophages - Corndog, Catdawg, Dylan, Firecracker, and YungJamal - designated as Cluster O with long flexible tails but with unusual prolate capsids. Proteomic analysis of phage Corndog particles, Catdawg particles, and Corndog-infected cells confirms expression of half of the predicted gene products and indicates a non-canonical mechanism for translation of the Corndog tape measure protein. Bioinformatic analysis identifies 8-9 strongly predicted SigA promoters and all five Cluster O genomes contain more than 30 copies of a 17 bp repeat sequence with dyad symmetry located throughout the genomes.
