Radial honeycomb core
Core alleviates many limitations of conventional nacelle construction methods. Radical core, made of metals or nonmetals, is fabricated either by joining nodes and then expanding, or by performing each layer and then joining nodes. Core may also be produced from ribbons or strips with joined nodes or ribbons oriented in longitudinal planes
Computational studies of light acceptance and propagation in straight and curved multimodal active fibres
A Monte Carlo simulation has been performed to track light rays in
cylindrical multimode fibres by ray optics. The trapping efficiencies for skew
and meridional rays in active fibres and distributions of characteristic
quantities for all trapped light rays have been calculated. The simulation
provides new results for curved fibres, where the analytical expressions are
too complex to be solved. The light losses due to sharp bending of fibres are
presented as a function of the ratio of curvature to fibre radius and bending
angle. It is shown that a radius of curvature to fibre radius ratio of greater
than 65 results in a light loss of less than 10% with the loss occurring in a
transition region at bending angles of pi/8 rad.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figure
Exploring the psychological rewards of a familiar semirural landscape: connecting to local nature through a mindful approach
This study analyses a 53,000 word diary of a year engaging with nature through over 200 trips to a semi-rural landscape. Thematic analysis revealed two themes; the transition from observer to nature connectedness and the ways in which the natural environment was experienced once a connection was made. These themes are discussed in relation to theories that seek to explain the positive effect of nature and nature connectedness. The findings are important as they suggest that repeated engagement with local semi-rural countryside can lead to a mindful approach and psychological rewards that do not require travel into the wilderness. The work informs further research into outcomes and processes of nature based interventions such as: trip frequency, duration and diary keeping
The VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey X: Evidence for a bimodal distribution of rotational velocities for the single early B-type stars
Aims: Projected rotational velocities (\vsini) have been estimated for 334
targets in the VLT-FLAMES Tarantula survey that do not manifest significant
radial velocity variations and are not supergiants. They have spectral types
from approximately O9.5 to B3. The estimates have been analysed to infer the
underlying rotational velocity distribution, which is critical for
understanding the evolution of massive stars.
Methods: Projected rotational velocities were deduced from the Fourier
transforms of spectral lines, with upper limits also being obtained from
profile fitting. For the narrower lined stars, metal and non-diffuse helium
lines were adopted, and for the broader lined stars, both non-diffuse and
diffuse helium lines; the estimates obtained using the different sets of lines
are in good agreement. The uncertainty in the mean estimates is typically 4%
for most targets. The iterative deconvolution procedure of Lucy has been used
to deduce the probability density distribution of the rotational velocities.
Results: Projected rotational velocities range up to approximately 450 \kms
and show a bi-modal structure. This is also present in the inferred rotational
velocity distribution with 25% of the sample having \ve100\,\kms
and the high velocity component having \ve\,\kms. There is no
evidence from the spatial and radial velocity distributions of the two
components that they represent either field and cluster populations or
different episodes of star formation. Be-type stars have also been identified.
Conclusions: The bi-modal rotational velocity distribution in our sample
resembles that found for late-B and early-A type stars. While magnetic braking
appears to be a possible mechanism for producing the low-velocity component, we
can not rule out alternative explanations.Comment: to be publisged in A&
Re-examining the consumption-wealth relationship : the role of model uncertainty
This paper discusses the consumption-wealth relationship. Following the recent influential workof Lettau and Ludvigson [e.g. Lettau and Ludvigson (2001), (2004)], we use data on consumption, assets andlabor income and a vector error correction framework. Key …ndings of their work are that consumption doesrespond to permanent changes in wealth in the expected manner, but that most changes in wealth are transitoryand have no e¤ect on consumption. We investigate the robustness of these results to model uncertainty andargue for the use of Bayesian model averaging. We …nd that there is model uncertainty with regards to thenumber of cointegrating vectors, the form of deterministic components, lag length and whether the cointegratingresiduals a¤ect consumption and income directly. Whether this uncertainty has important empirical implicationsdepends on the researcher's attitude towards the economic theory used by Lettau and Ludvigson. If we workwith their model, our findings are very similar to theirs. However, if we work with a broader set of models andlet the data speak, we obtain somewhat di¤erent results. In the latter case, we …nd that the exact magnitudeof the role of permanent shocks is hard to estimate precisely. Thus, although some support exists for the viewthat their role is small, we cannot rule out the possibility that they have a substantive role to play

Zero-voltage conductance peak from weak antilocalization in a Majorana nanowire
We show that weak antilocalization by disorder competes with resonant Andreev
reflection from a Majorana zero-mode to produce a zero-voltage conductance peak
of order e^2/h in a superconducting nanowire. The phase conjugation needed for
quantum interference to survive a disorder average is provided by particle-hole
symmetry - in the absence of time-reversal symmetry and without requiring a
topologically nontrivial phase. We identify methods to distinguish the Majorana

Investigation of initiation of gigantic jets connecting thunderclouds to the ionosphere
The initiation of giant electrical discharges called as "gigantic jets"
connecting thunderclouds to the ionosphere is investigated by numerical
simulation method in this paper. Using similarity relations, the triggering
conditions of streamer formation in laboratory situations are extended to form
a criterion of initiation of gigantic jets. The energy source causing a
gigantic jet is considered due to the quasi-electrostatic field generated by
thunderclouds. The electron dynamics from ionization threshold to streamer
initiation are simulated by the Monte Carlo technique. It is found that
gigantic jets are initiated at a height of ~18-24 km. This is in agreement with
the observations. The method presented in this paper could be also applied to
the analysis of the initiation of other discharges such as blue jets and red
