Mode Bifurcation and Fold Points of Complex Dispersion Curves for the Metamaterial Goubau Line
In this paper the complex dispersion curves of the four lowest-order
transverse magnetic modes of a dielectric Goubau line () are
compared with those of a dispersive metamaterial Goubau line. The vastly
different dispersion curve structure for the metamaterial Goubau line is
characterized by unusual features such as mode bifurcation, complex fold
points, both proper and improper complex modes, and merging of complex and real
modes
CD4+ cytolytic effectors are inefficient in the clearance of Listeria monocytogenes
Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) recognize and lyse target cells through the interaction of the T-cell receptor complex with the class I or class II major histocompatibility complex (MHC). The production of class I-restricted CTL has been shown to be critical to the elimination of specific pathogens including . However, the function of class II-restricted CTL in the clearance of intracellular pathogens is poorly understood. H-2β-microglobulin-deficient mice (βM−/−) are not able to produce CD8 CTL in response to infection with . We used this model to evaluate the efficacy of class II-restricted CTL, in the absence of a class I-restricted response, during a primary infection with . We demonstrate that, despite their effectiveness in adoptive transfer of protection, -specific CD4 class II-restricted cytotoxic lymphocytes are ineffective in decreasing titres of in the spleen after an established infection. In βM−/− mice, persistence of in the spleen was found preferentially in class II-negative cells. Surprisingly, class I-restricted CTL from C57BL/6 mice were capable of decreasing bacterial titres during an established infection even in the absence of detectable class I on the surface of cells from βM−/− mice. These data strongly suggest that, in the absence of a class I-restricted response, pathogens that elicit a class II-restricted cytotoxic response may escape prompt eradication by the immune system

We study an evolutionary version of the Prisoner's Dilemma game, played by
agents placed in a small-world network. Agents are able to change their
strategy, imitating that of the most successful neighbor. We observe that
different topologies, ranging from regular lattices to random graphs, produce a
variety of emergent behaviors. This is a contribution towards the study of
social phenomena and transitions governed by the topology of the community
Stable Topologies of Event Horizon
In our previous work, it was shown that the topology of an event horizon (EH)
is determined by the past endpoints of the EH. A torus EH (the collision of two
EH) is caused by the two-dimensional (one-dimensional) set of the endpoints. In
the present article, we examine the stability of the topology of the EH. We see
that a simple case of a single spherical EH is unstable. Furthermore, in
general, an EH with handles (a torus, a double torus, ...) is structurally

Analysis of a three-component model phase diagram by Catastrophe Theory
We analyze the thermodynamical potential of a lattice gas model with three
components and five parameters using the methods of Catastrophe Theory. We find
the highest singularity, which has codimension five, and establish its
transversality. Hence the corresponding seven-degree Landau potential, the
canonical form Wigwam or , constitutes the adequate starting point to

Fuzzy Geometry of Phase Space and Quantization of Massive Fields
The quantum space-time and the phase space with fuzzy structure is
investigated as the possible quantization formalism. In this theory the state
of nonrelativistic particle corresponds to the element of fuzzy ordered set
(Foset) - fuzzy point. Due to Foset partial (weak) ordering, particle's space
coordinate x acquires principal uncertainty dx. It's shown that Shroedinger
formalism of Quantum Mechanics can be completely derived from consideration of

Topological classification of black Hole: Generic Maxwell set and crease set of horizon
The crease set of an event horizon or a Cauchy horizon is an important object
which determines qualitative properties of the horizon. In particular, it
determines the possible topologies of the spatial sections of the horizon. By
Fermat's principle in geometric optics, we relate the crease set and the
Maxwell set of a smooth function in the context of singularity theory. We
thereby give a classification of generic topological structure of the Maxwell

The Effect of Habitual Smoking on VO2max
VO2max is associated with many factors, including age, gender, physical activity, and body composition. It is popularly believed that habitual smoking lowers aerobic fitness. PURPOSE: to determine the effect of habitual smoking on VO2max after controlling for age, gender, activity and BMI. METHODS: 2374 men and 375 women employed at the NASA/Johnson Space Center were measured for VO2max by indirect calorimetry (RER>=1.1), activity by the 11 point (0-10) NASA Physical Activity Status Scale (PASS), BMI and smoking pack-yrs (packs day*y of smoking). Age was recorded in years and gender was coded as M=1, W=0. Pack.y was made a categorical variable consisting of four levels as follows: Never Smoked (0), Light (1-10), Regular (11-20), Heavy (>20). Group differences were verified by ANOVA. A General Linear Models (GLM) was used to develop two models to examine the relationship of smoking behavior on VO2max. GLM #1(without smoking) determined the combined effects of age, gender, PASS and BMI on VO2max. GLM #2 (with smoking) determined the added effects of smoking (pack.y groupings) on VO2max after controlling for age, gender, PASS and BMI. Constant errors (CE) were calculated to compare the accuracy of the two models for estimating the VO2max of the smoking subgroups. RESULTS: ANOVA affirmed the mean VO2max of each pack.y grouping decreased significantly (p<0.01) as the level of smoking exposure increased. GLM #1 showed that age, gender, PASS and BMI were independently related with VO2max (R2 = 0.642, SEE = 4.90, p<0.001). The added pack.y variables in GLM #2 were statistically significant (R2 change = 0.7%, p<0.01). Post hoc analysis showed that compared to Never Smoked, the effects on VO2max from Light and Regular smoking habits were -0.83 and -0.85 ml.kg- 1.min-1 respectively (p<0.05). The effect of Heavy smoking on VO2max was -2.56 ml.kg- 1.min-1 (p<0.001). The CE s of each smoking group in GLM #2 was smaller than the CE s of the smoking group counterparts in GLM #1. CONCLUSIONS: After accounting for the effects of gender, age, PASS and BMI the effect of habitual smoking on reducing VO2max is minimal, about 0.85 ml/kg/min, until the habit exceeds 20 pack.y at which point an additional decrease of 1.71 ml/kg/min is noted. statistical mechanics to study systems with long range forces. This fundamental
and methodological study leads us to consider the different domains of
applications in a trans-disciplinary perspective (astrophysics, nuclear
