Revisiting He-like X-ray Emission Line Plasma Diagnostics
A complete model of helium-like line and continuum emission has been
incorporated into the plasma simulation code Cloudy. All elements between He
and Zn are treated, any number of levels can be considered, and radiative and
collisional processes are included. This includes photoionization from all
levels, line transfer including continuum pumping and destruction by background
opacities, scattering, and collisional processes. The model is calculated
self-consistently along with the ionization and thermal structure of the
surrounding nebula. The result is a complete line and continuum spectrum of the
plasma. Here we focus on the ions of the He I sequence and reconsider the
standard helium-like X-ray diagnostics. We first consider semi-analytical
predictions and compare these with previous work in the low-density,
optically-thin limit. We then perform numerical calculations of helium-like
X-ray emission (such as is observed in some regions of Seyferts) and predict
line ratios as a function of ionizing flux, hydrogen density, and column
density. In particular, we demonstrate that, in photoionized plasmas, the
-ratio, a density indicator in a collisional plasma, depends on the
ionization fraction and is strongly affected by optical depth for large column
densities. We also introduce the notion that the -ratio is a measure of the
incident continuum at UV wavelengths. The -ratio, which is
temperature-sensitive in a collisional plasma, is also discussed, and shown to
be strongly affected by continuum pumping and optical depth as well. These
distinguish a photoionized plasma from the more commonly studied collisional

Dynamics of entanglement entropy of interacting fermions in a 1D driven harmonic trap
Following up on a recent analysis of two cold atoms in a time-dependent
harmonic trap in one dimension, we explore the entanglement entropy of two and
three fermions in the same situation when driven through a parametric
resonance. We find that the presence of such a resonance in the two-particle
system leaves a clear imprint on the entanglement entropy. We show how the
signal is modified by attractive and repulsive contact interactions, and how it
remains present for the three-particle system. Additionaly, we extend the work
of recent experiments to demonstrate how restricting observation to a limited

Investigation of Effectiveness of Air-Heating a Hollow Steel Propeller for Protection Against Icing. 3: 25% Partitioned Blades
The icing protection obtained from an internally air-heated propeller blade partitioned to confine the heated air forward of 25-percent chord was investigated in the NACA Cleveland icing research tunnel. A production-model hollow steel propeller was modified with an Internal radial partition at 25-percent chord and with shank and tip openings to admit and exhaust the heated air. Temperatures were measured on the blade surfaces and in the heated-air system during tunnel icing conditions. Heat-exchanger effectiveness and photographs of Ice formations on the blades were obtained. Surface temperature measurements indicated that confining the heated air forward of the 25-percent chord gave.a more economical distribution of the applied heat as compared with unpartitioned and 50-percent partitioned blades, by dissipating a greater percentage of the available heat at the leading edge. At a propeller speed of 850 rpm, a heating rate of 7000 Btu per hour per blade at a shank air temperature of 400 F provided adequate Icing protection at ambient-air temperatures of 23 F but not at temperatures as low as 15 F. With the heating rate used, a heat-exchanger effectiveness of 77 percent was obtained as compared to 56 percent for 50-percent partitioned and 47 percent for unpartitioned blades
Accounting for Seismic Risk in Financial Analysis of Property Investment
A methodology is presented for making property investment decisions using loss
analysis and the principles of decision analysis. It proposes that the investor choose among
competing investment alternatives on the basis of the certainty equivalent of their net asset value
which depends on the uncertain discounted future net income, uncertain discounted future
earthquake losses, initial equity and the investor’s risk tolerance. The earthquake losses are
modelled using a seismic vulnerability function, the site seismic hazard function, and an
assumption that strong shaking at a site follows a Poisson process. A building-specific
vulnerability approach, called assembly-based vulnerability, or ABV, is used. ABV involves a
simulation approach that includes dynamic structural analyses and damage analyses using
fragility functions and probability distributions on unit repair costs and downtimes for all
vulnerable structural and nonstructural components in a building. The methodology is
demonstrated using some results from a seven-storey reinforced-concrete hotel in Los Angeles
An investigation of reports of Controlled Flight Toward Terrain (CFTT)
Some 258 reports from more than 23,000 documents in the files of the Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) were found to be to the hazard of flight into terrain with no prior awareness by the crew of impending disaster. Examination of the reports indicate that human error was a casual factor in 64% of the incidents in which some threat of terrain conflict was experienced. Approximately two-thirds of the human errors were attributed to controllers, the most common discrepancy being a radar vector below the Minimum Vector Altitude (MVA). Errors by pilots were of a much diverse nature and include a few instances of gross deviations from their assigned altitudes. The ground proximity warning system and the minimum safe altitude warning equipment were the initial recovery factor in some 18 serious incidents and were apparently the sole warning in six reported instances which otherwise would most probably have ended in disaster
Parton and Hadron Correlations in Jets
Correlation between shower partons is first studied in high jets. Then
in the framework of parton recombination the correlation between pions in
heavy-ion collisions is investigated. Since thermal partons play very different
roles in central and peripheral collisions, it is found that the correlation
functions of the produced hadrons behave very differently at different
centralities, especially at intermediate . The correlation function that
can best exhibit the distinctive features is suggested. There is not a great
deal of overlap between what we can calculate and what has been measured.
Nevertheless, some aspects of our results compare favorably with experimental

Catching Super Massive Black Hole Binaries Without a Net
The gravitational wave signals from coalescing Supermassive Black Hole
Binaries are prime targets for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA).
With optimal data processing techniques, the LISA observatory should be able to
detect black hole mergers anywhere in the Universe. The challenge is to find
ways to dig the signals out of a combination of instrument noise and the large
foreground from stellar mass binaries in our own galaxy. The standard procedure
of matched filtering against a grid of templates can be computationally
prohibitive, especially when the black holes are spinning or the mass ratio is
large. Here we develop an alternative approach based on Metropolis-Hastings
sampling and simulated annealing that is orders of magnitude cheaper than a
grid search. We demonstrate our approach on simulated LISA data streams that
contain the signals from binary systems of Schwarzschild Black Holes, embedded
in instrument noise and a foreground containing 26 million galactic binaries.
The search algorithm is able to accurately recover the 9 parameters that
describe the black hole binary without first having to remove any of the bright
