Materiał i metodyka. Badania przeprowadzono w okresie od 3 listopada do 15 grudnia 2013 r. w przyzakładowej przychodni stomatologicznej Państwowej Wytwórni Papierów Wartościowych w Warszawie. W badanej grupie było 32 osoby (11 kobiet i 21 mężczyzn) w wieku 27-67 lat. Każdego badanego objęto dwuetapowym badaniem: I etap Najpierw lekarz dentysta przystąpił do badania klinicznego, w którym oceniono występowanie potrzeb leczniczych u pacjentów oraz stan zdrowia jamy ustnej. II etap Badanie ankietowe kwestionariuszem GOHAI (Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index. Wyniki badań i wnioski. Introduction. The interest in the quality of life as far as health is concerned has recently noticeably increased. Such an attitude towards health may result from the acceptance of a holistic approach to a person. Studies on the influence of the health of oral cavity on the patient's quality of life are relatively infrequent. Nowadays, such studies can utilise general as well as specific indices. The aim of this study was to determine the quality of life of persons suffering from periodontal diseases basing on the GOHAI (Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index) questionnaire. Materials and Methods. The study was carried out between 3 November and 15 December 2014 in the company dental clinic of the Polish Security Printing Works in Warsaw. The studied group consisted of 32 persons (11 women and 21) men aged 27-67. Each of the studied people underwent a two-stage process: Stage I At first, a dentist carried out a clinical examination assessing the patient's needs for treatment and the health of oral cavity. Each of the patients was examined in artificial lighting, with a mirror and a dental probe. In this stage, a group of persons with periodontal diseases was selected. The group was subject to further study in the stage II – the survey. Stage II Survey study with the use of the GOHAI (Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index) questionnaire. Results and Conclusions. 1.The distribution of answers (score) for given questions of the GOHAI questionnaire was strongly diversified. Among the studied persons, the score distribution ranged from 19 to 46. The average score obtained by the persons suffering from periodontal diseases was 30. 2.Most of the conditions resulting from the development of periodontal diseases occurred with various frequency in 1/3 to ca. 1/2 of the respondents. 3. For a more in-depth analysis, the repetition of this type of study on a considerably greater number of persons suffering from periodontal diseases will be required

The Bibliography of Polish Ethnography (BEP) has been online since 2007 and since that year has changed several times. At the technical level, the software was changed, which effected on the way how the editors work. At the level of functioning, the functionality of the database has been expanded by adding redirects from the database directly to the texts, if they are available in the public domain. The members of the editorial team also began to incorporate BEP into the didactic process. The paper presents the lessons learned from the work on modified database and the experience gained during didactics using BEP

Simulating the Mammalian Blastocyst - Molecular and Mechanical Interactions Pattern the Embryo

Mammalian embryogenesis is a dynamic process involving gene expression and mechanical forces between proliferating cells. The exact nature of these interactions, which determine the lineage patterning of the trophectoderm and endoderm tissues occurring in a highly regulated manner at precise periods during the embryonic development, is an area of debate. We have developed a computational modeling framework for studying this process, by which the combined effects of mechanical and genetic interactions are analyzed within the context of proliferating cells. At a purely mechanical level, we demonstrate that the perpendicular alignment of the animal-vegetal (a-v) and embryonic-abembryonic (eb-ab) axes is a result of minimizing the total elastic conformational energy of the entire collection of cells, which are constrained by the zona pellucida. The coupling of gene expression with the mechanics of cell movement is important for formation of both the trophectoderm and the endoderm. In studying the formation of the trophectoderm, we contrast and compare quantitatively two hypotheses: (1) The position determines gene expression, and (2) the gene expression determines the position. Our model, which couples gene expression with mechanics, suggests that differential adhesion between different cell types is a critical determinant in the robust endoderm formation. In addition to differential adhesion, two different testable hypotheses emerge when considering endoderm formation: (1) A directional force acts on certain cells and moves them into forming the endoderm layer, which separates the blastocoel and the cells of the inner cell mass (ICM). In this case the blastocoel simply acts as a static boundary. (2) The blastocoel dynamically applies pressure upon the cells in contact with it, such that cell segregation in the presence of differential adhesion leads to the endoderm formation. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt to combine cell-based spatial mechanical simulations with genetic networks to explain mammalian embryogenesis. Such a framework provides the means to test hypotheses in a controlled in silico environment

Disorder suppression and precise conductance quantization in constrictions of PbTe quantum wells

Conductance quantization was measured in submicron constrictions of PbTe, patterned into narrow,12 nm wide quantum wells deposited between Pb0.92_{0.92}Eu0.08_{0.08}Te barriers. Because the quantum confinement imposed by the barriers is much stronger than the lateral one, the one-dimensional electron energy level structure is very similar to that usually met in constrictions of AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructures. However, in contrast to any other system studied so far, we observe precise conductance quantization in 2e2/h2e^2/h units, {\it despite of significant amount of charged defects in the vicinity of the constriction}. We show that such extraordinary results is a consequence of the paraelectric properties of PbTe, namely, the suppression of long-range tails of the Coulomb potentials due to the huge dielectric constant.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. In-plane uniaxial anisotropy rotations in (Ga,Mn)As thin films

We show, by SQUID magnetometry, that in (Ga,Mn)As films the in-plane uniaxial magnetic easy axis is consistently associated with particular crystallographic directions and that it can be rotated from the [-110] direction to the [110] direction by low temperature annealing. We show that this behavior is hole-density-dependent and does not originate from surface anisotropy. The presence of uniaxial anisotropy as well its dependence on the hole-concentration and temperature can be explained in terms of the p-d Zener model of the ferromagnetism assuming a small trigonal distortion.Comment: 4 pages, 6 Postscript figures, uses revtex

ICT for Sustainable Last-Mile Logistics: Data, People and Parcels

In this paper we present a vision of how ICT can be leveraged to help combat the impact on pollution, congestion and carbon emissions contributed by the parcel delivery sector. This is timely given annual growth in parcel deliveries, especially same-day deliveries, and the need to inform initiatives to clean up our cities such as the sales ban on new petrol and diesel vehicles in the UK by 2040. Our insights are informed by research on parcel logistics in Central London, leveraging a data set of parcel manifests spanning 6 months. To understand the impact of growing e-commerce trends on parcel deliveries we provide a mixed methods case study leveraging data-driven analysis and qualitative fieldwork to demonstrate how ICT can uncover the impact of parcel deliveries on delivery drivers and their delivery rounds during seasonal deliveries (or “the silly season”). We finish by discussing key opportunities for intervention and further research in ICT4S and co-created Smart Cities, connecting our findings with existing research and data as a call to the ICT4S community to help tackle the growth in carbon emissions, pollution and congestion linked to parcel deliveries

This article presents the cross-cultural validation of the Entitlement Attitudes Questionnaire, a tool designed to measure three facets of psychological entitlement: active, passive, and revenge entitlement. Active entitlement was defined as the tendency to protect individual rights based on self-worthiness. Passive entitlement was defined as the belief in obligations to and expectations toward other people and institutions for the fulfillment of the individual’s needs. Revenge entitlement was defined as the tendency to protect one’s individual rights when violated by others and the tendency to reciprocate insults. The 15-item EAQ was validated in a series of three studies: the first one on a general Polish sample (N = 1,900), the second one on a sample of Polish students (N = 199), and the third one on student samples from 28 countries (N = 5,979). A three-factor solution was confirmed across all samples. Examination of measurement equivalence indicated partial metric invariance of EAQ for all national samples. Discriminant and convergent validity of the EAQ was also confirmed

The aim of the study was to determine the characteristics of temporal and space–time autocorrelation of pollen counts of Alnus, Betula, and Corylus in the air of eight cities in Poland. Daily average pollen concentrations were monitored over 8 years (2001–2005 and 2009–2011) using Hirst-designed volumetric spore traps. The spatial and temporal coherence of data was investigated using the autocorrelation and cross-correlation functions. The calculation and mathematical modelling of 61 correlograms were performed for up to 25 days back. The study revealed an association between temporal variations in Alnus, Betula, and Corylus pollen counts in Poland and three main groups of factors such as: (1) air mass exchange after the passage of a single weather front (30–40 % of pollen count variation); (2) long-lasting factors (50–60 %); and (3) random factors, including diurnal variations and measurements errors (10 %). These results can help to improve the quality of forecasting models
