Chromosomal anchoring of linkage groups and identification of wing size QTL using markers and FISH probes derived from microdissected chromosomes in Nasonia(Pteromalidae : Hymenoptera)
Nasonia vitripennis is a small parasitic hymenopteran with a 50-year history of genetic work including linkage mapping with mutant and molecular markers. For the first time we are now able to anchor linkage groups to specific chromosomes. Two linkage maps based on a hybrid cross (N. vitripennis x N. longicornis) were constructed using STS, RAPID and microsatellite markers, where 17 of the linked STS markers were developed from single microdissected banded chromosomes. Based on these microdissections we anchored all linkage groups to the five chromosomes of N. vitripennis. We also verified the chromosomal specificity of the microdissection through in situ hybridization and linkage analyses. This information and technique will allow us in the future to locate genes or QTL detected in different mapping populations efficiently and fast on homologous chromosomes or even chromosomal regions. To test this approach we asked whether QTL responsible for the wing size in two different hybrid crosses (N. vitripennis x N. longicornis and N. vitripennis x N. giraulti) map to the same location. One QTL with a major effect was found to map to the centromere region of chromosome 3 in both crosses. This could indicate that indeed the same gene/s is involved in the reduction of wing in N. vitripennis and N. longicornis. Copyright (C) 2003 S. Karger AG, Basel
High-pressure versus isoelectronic doping effect on the honeycomb iridate NaIrO
We study the effect of isoelectronic doping and external pressure in tuning
the ground state of the honeycomb iridate NaIrO by combining optical
spectroscopy with synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements on single
crystals. The obtained optical conductivity of NaIrO is discussed in
terms of a Mott insulating picture versus the formation of quasimolecular
orbitals and in terms of Kitaev-interactions. With increasing Li content ,
(NaLi)IrO moves deeper into the Mott insulating regime and
there are indications that up to a doping level of 24\% the compound comes
closer to the Kitaev-limit. The optical conductivity spectrum of single
crystalline -LiIrO does not follow the trends observed for the
series up to . There are strong indications that -LiIrO
is less close to the Kitaev-limit compared to NaIrO and closer to the
quasimolecular orbital picture. Except for the pressure-induced hardening of
the phonon modes, the optical properties of NaIrO seem to be robust
against external pressure. Possible explanations of the unexpected evolution of
the optical conductivity with isolectronic doping and the drastic change
between and are given by comparing the pressure-induced changes
of lattice parameters and the optical conductivity with the corresponding
changes induced by doping.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
BATSE Soft Gamma-Ray Observations of GROJ0422+32
We report results of a comprehensive study of the soft gamma-ray (30 keV to
1.7 MeV) emission of GROJ0422+32 during its first known outburst in 1992. These
results were derived from the BATSE earth-occultation database with the JPL
data analysis package, EBOP (Enhanced BATSE Occultation Package). Results
presented here focus primarily on the long-term temporal and spectral
variability of the source emission associated with the outburst. The light
curves with 1-day resolution in six broad energy-bands show the high-energy
flux (>200 keV) led the low-energy flux (<200 keV) by ~5 days in reaching the
primary peak, but lagged the latter by ~7 days in starting the declining phase.
We confirm the "secondary maximum" of the low-energy (<200 keV) flux at TJD
8970-8981, ~120 days after the first maximum. Our data show that the "secondary
maximum" was also prominent in the 200-300 keV band, but became less pronounced
at higher energies. During this 200-day period, the spectrum evolved from a
power-law with photon index of 1.75 on TJD 8839, to a shape that can be
described by a Comptonized model or an exponential power law below 300 keV,
with a variable power-law tail above 300 keV. The spectrum remained roughly in
this two-component shape until ~9 November (TJD 8935) and then returned to the
initial power-law shape with an index of ~2 until the end of the period. The
correlation of the two spectral shapes with the high and low luminosities of
the soft gamma-ray emission is strongly reminiscent of that seen in Cygnus X-1.
We interpret these results in terms of the Advection Dominated Accretion Flow
(ADAF) model with possibly a "jet-like" region that persistently produced the
non-thermal power-law gamma rays observed throughout the event.Comment: 40 pages total, including 10 figures and 2 table
Persistent detwinning of iron pnictides by small magnetic fields
Our comprehensive study on EuFeAs reveals a dramatic reduction of
magnetic detwinning fields compared to other AFeAs (A = Ba, Sr, Ca)
iron pnictides by indirect magneto-elastic coupling of the Eu ions. We
find that only 0.1T are sufficient for persistent detwinning below the local
Eu ordering; above = 19K, higher fields are necessary.
Even after the field is switched off, a significant imbalance of twin domains
remains constant up to the structural and electronic phase transition (190K).
This persistent detwinning provides the unique possibility to study the low
temperature electronic in-plane anisotropy of iron pnictides without applying
any symmetrybreaking external force.Comment: accepted by Physical Review Letter
Advection-Dominated Accretion and Black Hole Event Horizons
The defining characteristic of a black hole is that it possesses an event
horizon through which matter and energy can fall in but from which nothing
escapes. Soft X-ray transients (SXTs), a class of X-ray binaries, appear to
confirm this fundamental property of black holes. SXTs that are thought to
contain accreting black holes display a large variation of luminosity between
their bright and faint states, while SXTs with accreting neutron stars have a
smaller variation. This difference is predicted if the former stars have
horizons and the latter have normal surfaces.Comment: 11 pages, including 2 tables and 2 figures. To appear in The

Effects and metabolism of the phenylurea herbicide isoproturon in the submerged macrophyte Ceratophyllum demersum L.
Phenylurea herbicides such as isoproturon (IPU) restrain photosynthesis by connection to the D1 protein in the photosynthetic apparatus in target plants such as weeds in crop fields. Direct effects of herbicides on organisms, which are not a target of the pesticide, have been examined seldom. Since a many of agriculturally used pesticides are found in surface waters in agricultural areas, we determined the effects on the photosynthetic oxygen production of the submerged macrophyte Ceratophyllum demersum using concentrations of IPU ranging from 0.2 μg/L to 200 μg/L IPU. At environmental relevant concentrations of IPU, the photosynthetic oxygen release was impaired. A reduction of the photosynthetic oxygen release showed a time dependency with the assigned herbicide concentrations. Furthermore, this study presents the first indications for metabolism of IPU in the aquatic plant C. demersum
