    Achieving carbon neutrality for a future large greenhouse gas emitter in Quebec, Canada: a case study

    To reach the Paris Agreement targets of holding the global temperature increase below 2 °C above the preindustrial levels, every human activity will need to be carbon neutral by 2050. Feasible means for industries to achieve carbon neutrality must be developed and assessed economically. Herein we present a case study on available solutions to achieve net-zero carbon from the get-go for a planned liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Quebec, which would classify as a large Canadian greenhouse gas (GHG) emitter. From a literature review, available options were prioritized with the promoter. Each prioritized potential solution is discussed in light of its feasibility and the associated economic opportunities and challenges. Although net-zero carbon is feasible from the get-go, results show that the promoter should identify opportunities to reduce as much as possible emissions at source, cooperate with other industries for CO2 capture and utilization, replace natural gas from fossil sources by renewable sources and offset the remaining emissions by planting trees and/or buying offsets on the compliance and voluntary markets. As some of these solutions are still to be developed, to ensure timely net-zero pledge for the lifespan of the LNG plant, a portfolio and progressive approach to combine offsets and other options is preferable

    Leigh syndrome French Canadian (LSFC) is a recessive disease caused by mutations in the LRPPRC gene (leucine-rich pentatricopeptide repeat containing protein). These mutations induce a cytochrome c oxidase (COX) deficiency resulting in episodes of acute acidotic crisis that will often lead to death. There is no effective treatment. Methylene blue (MB) is a redox dye that increases COX content and activity in vitro and in vivo suggesting that MB could prevent and treat LSFC. In this study, the protective effect of low-concentration MB was tested on two LSFC cell lines, including LSFC-F1, homozygous for the mutation A354V, and LSFC-F2 a compound heterozygous for the mutations A354V and C12775STOP. MB effect on metabolic activity was assessed on both LSFC cells in stable and acidotic conditions. For LSFC-F1, results showed that metabolic activity drastically decline after 96 hours in both conditions but not LSFC-F2 and normal cells. MB completely prevents the decrease of metabolic activity in LSFC-F1. Intracellular ATP content was also measured in both culture media. After 96 hours in acidotic medium, ATP content was almost completely depleted for both LSFC cells. Interestingly, MB completely restores ATP content in LSFC-F1 and LSFC-F2 cells. Finally, MB strongly improves the survival of both LSFC cells. This article is open to POST-PUBLICATION REVIEW.     Les plantations forestiĂšres reprĂ©sentent un outil sylvicole reconnu pour assurer un approvisionnement en matiĂšre ligneuse qui rĂ©pond aux attentes de la sociĂ©tĂ© envers l'amĂ©nagement durable des forĂȘts. Toutefois, elles font aussi partie du scĂ©nario sylvicole qui a le plus grand potentiel d'artificialisation de la forĂȘt naturelle. Les objectifs de la sylviculture intensive de plantations peuvent alors paraĂźtre, de prime abord, en contradiction avec ceux de l'amĂ©nagement Ă©cosystĂ©mique. Nous dĂ©crivons le processus par lequel nous avons dĂ©fini et documentĂ© des enjeux associĂ©s aux plantations et proposĂ© des pistes de solutions pour que la sylviculture intensive de plantations puisse s'intĂ©grer Ă  l'amĂ©nagement Ă©cosystĂ©mique. Nous avons identifiĂ© des enjeux relatifs Ă  l'ampleur, Ă  la localisation et Ă  l'agencement spatial des plantations, aux attributs clĂ©s et Ă  la rĂ©silience de la forĂȘt naturelle, Ă  l'acceptabilitĂ© sociale, ainsi qu’à la productivitĂ© et Ă  la rentabilitĂ© des plantations. Nous avons Ă©galement proposĂ© des pistes de solutions qui permettraient de rĂ©aliser les plantations dans un contexte d'amĂ©nagement Ă©cosystĂ©mique, telles que la modulation des traitements sylvicoles pour augmenter la naturalitĂ© des plantations, la rĂ©alisation des traitements de maniĂšre Ă  obtenir la production attendue, ainsi qu'un dĂ©ploiement dans le paysage qui intĂšgre les prĂ©occupations des parties prenantes et qui considĂšre la naturalitĂ© de la matrice forestiĂšre. Forest plantations are recognized as a silvicultural tool for ensuring a timber supply that meets public expectations regarding sustainable forest management. However, they are also part of the silvicultural scenario that shows the greatest potential for the artificialization of natural forests. From a firsthand perspective, intensive plantation silviculture objectives may appear antagonistic to those of ecosystem management. Here we describe the process through which we defined and documented plantation issues, then propose potential solutions to allow the integration of intensive plantation silviculture into ecosystem management. We identify issues related to the scale, localization and spatial arrangement of plantations, the key attributes and resilience of natural forests, social acceptability, and the productivity and profitability of plantations. We also propose potential solutions likely to help manage plantations within a context of ecosystem management. These include modulating silvicultural treatments to enhance the naturalness of plantations, conducting treatments to obtain expected production rates, and ensuring that plantations are deployed across the landscape in a manner that integrates stakeholder concerns and considers the naturalness of the forest matrix

    Archiving primary data: solutions for long-term studies

    The recent trend for journals to require open access to primary data included in publications has been embraced by many biologists, but has caused apprehension amongst researchers engaged in long-term ecological and evolutionary studies. A worldwide survey of 73 principal investigators (Pls) with long-term studies revealed positive attitudes towards sharing data with the agreement or involvement of the PI, and 93% of PIs have historically shared data. Only 8% were in favor of uncontrolled, open access to primary data while 63% expressed serious concern. We present here their viewpoint on an issue that can have non-trivial scientific consequences. We discuss potential costs of public data archiving and provide possible solutions to meet the needs of journals and researchers

    A united statement of the global chiropractic research community against the pseudoscientific claim that chiropractic care boosts immunity.

    BACKGROUND: In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the International Chiropractors Association (ICA) posted reports claiming that chiropractic care can impact the immune system. These claims clash with recommendations from the World Health Organization and World Federation of Chiropractic. We discuss the scientific validity of the claims made in these ICA reports. MAIN BODY: We reviewed the two reports posted by the ICA on their website on March 20 and March 28, 2020. We explored the method used to develop the claim that chiropractic adjustments impact the immune system and discuss the scientific merit of that claim. We provide a response to the ICA reports and explain why this claim lacks scientific credibility and is dangerous to the public. More than 150 researchers from 11 countries reviewed and endorsed our response. CONCLUSION: In their reports, the ICA provided no valid clinical scientific evidence that chiropractic care can impact the immune system. We call on regulatory authorities and professional leaders to take robust political and regulatory action against those claiming that chiropractic adjustments have a clinical impact on the immune system

    Background: There are no CanMEDS-FM-based milestone tool to guide feedback during direct observation (DO). We have developed a guide to support documentation of feedback for direct observation (DO) in Canadian family medicine (FP) programs. Methods: The Guide was designed in three phases with the collaboration of five Canadian FP programs with at least a French-speaking teaching site: 1) literature review and needs study; 2) development of the SPOD Feedback Guide; 3) testing the Guide in a video simulation context with qualitative content analysis. Results: Phase 1 demonstrated the need for a narrative guide aimed at 1) specifying mutual expectations according to the resident's level of training and the clinical context, 2) providing the supervisor with tools and structure in his observations 3) to facilitate documentation of feedback. Phase 2 made it possible to develop the Guide, in paper and electronic formats, meeting the needs identified. In phase 3, 15 supervisors used the guide for three levels of residence. The Guide was adjusted following this testing to recall the phases of the clinical encounter that were often forgotten during feedback (before consultation, diagnosis and follow-up), and to suggest types of formulation to be favored (stimulating questions). , questions of clarification, reflections). Conclusion: Based on evidence and a collaborative approach, this Guide will equip French-speaking Canadian supervisors performing SPOD in family medicine.RĂ©sumĂ© Contexte : Il n’existe aucun outil par jalons reposant sur les CanMEDS-MF pour guider la rĂ©troaction en supervision par observation directe (SPOD). Nous avons dĂ©veloppĂ© un guide pour soutenir la documentation de la rĂ©troaction en SPOD en mĂ©decine familiale (MF) au Canada. MĂ©thode : La conception du Guide a Ă©tĂ© effectuĂ©e en trois phases avec la collaboration de cinq programmes de MF canadiens ayant minimalement un site d’enseignement francophone : 1) recension des Ă©crits et Ă©tude des besoins; 2) Ă©laboration du Guide de rĂ©troaction SPOD; 3) mise Ă  l’essai du Guide en contexte de simulation vidĂ©o avec analyse de contenu qualitative.
