Treatment of osteolytic solitary painful osseous metastases with radiofrequency ablation or cryoablation: a retrospective study by propensity analysis
The present study aimed to measure the improvement in pain relief and quality of life in patients with osteolytic solitary painful bone metastasis treated by cryoablation (CA) or radiofrequency ablation (RFA). Fifty patients with solitary osteolytic painful bone metastases were retrospectively studied and selected by propensity analysis. Twenty-five patients underwent CA and the remaining twenty-five underwent RFA. Pain relief, in terms of complete response (CR), the number of patients requiring analgesia and the changes in self-rated quality of life (QoL) were measured following the two treatments. Thirty-two percent of patients treated by CA experienced a CR at 12 weeks versus 20% of patients treated by RFA. The rate of CR increased significantly with respect to baseline only in the group treated by CA. In both groups there was a significant change in the partial response with respect to baseline (36% in the CA group vs. 44% in the RFA group). The recurrence rate in the CA and RFA groups was 12% and 8%, respectively. The reduction in narcotic medication requirements with respect to baseline was only significant in the group treated by CA. A significant improvement in self-rated QoL was observed in both groups. The present study seems to suggest that CA only significantly improves the rate of CR and decreases the requirement of narcotic medications. Both CA and RFA led to an improvement in the self-rated QoL of patients after the treatments. However, the results of the present study should be considered as preliminary and to serve as a framework around which future trials may be designed

DNA Pool Analysis-based Forgery-Detection of Dairy Products
Food integrity and food safety have received much attention in recent years due to the dramatic increasing number of food frauds. In this article we focus on the problem of dairy products traceability. In particular, we propose an automatic forgery detection system able to detect frauds in milk and cheese. We investigate the use of Short Tandem Repeats analysis data, processed by a Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy algorithm in order to evaluate a traceability score between the products and their producer, and to highlight possible adulterations and inconsistencies. To demonstrate the usability of the proposed heuristic algorithm in a real setup, we also present the results collected from two real Italian farms
Comparison of anogenital distance and correlation with vulvo-vaginal atrophy: a pilot study on premenopausal and postmenopausal women
OBJECTIVES:
Anogenital distance (AGD) represents the space between labia posterior commissure and anus. This was pilot study to investigate how menopause and so lack of oestrogens affects AGD.
METHODS:
A total of 109 patients were enrolled. AGD was measured in lithotomy position using sterile paper ruler. Anogenital index (AGI) was used to control 2 variables of height and weight (body mass index, kg/m2). Vaginal health index (VHI) was used to evaluate vaginal wellness. Female sexual function index (FSFI) questionnaire was administered to all women to evaluate the impact of menopause on their sexual function.
RESULTS:
AGD (30.87 ± 2.98 vs. 17.57 ± 2.18; P = 0.0001) and AGI (1.40 ± 0.21 vs. 0.70 ± 0.15; P = 0.0001) were both significantly lower in the postmenopausal group. Postmenopausal women were affected by vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA) significantly. Thus, VHI scores were dramatically worse in postmenopausal group (23.95 ± 1.28 vs. 10.75 ± 3.41; P = 0.0001) as well as FSFI results (32.68 ± 2.25 vs. 19.78 ± 5.46; P = 0.0001).
CONCLUSIONS:
This study confirms that AGD in post-menopausal women was significantly shorter than AGD in premenopausal women, correlating with an increase of VVA and sexual impairment. Changes of AGD and AGI demonstrated to predict hormonal changes that may occur after menopause
Analysis of the autoimmune regulator gene in patients with autoimmune non-APECED polyendocrinopathies
AbstractThe pathogenesis of autoimmunity was derived from a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy is a rare autosomal recessive disease caused by mutations in the autoimmune regulator (AIRE) gene. AIRE gene variants and, in particular, heterozygous loss-of-function mutations were also discovered in organ-specific autoimmune disorders, possibly contributing to their etiopathogenesis. It was suggested that even predisposition to develop certain autoimmune conditions may be derived from AIRE gene polymorphisms including S278R and intronic IVS9+6 G>A. In this study we unravel the hypothesis on whether AIRE gene variants may predispose individuals to associated autoimmune conditions in 41 Italian patients affected by non-APECED autoimmune polyendocrinopathies. We could not detect any heterozygous mutations of the AIRE gene. Although a trend of association was observed, heterozygous polymorphisms S278R and IVS9+6 G>A were detected in patients without statistically significant prevalence than in controls. Their putative contribution to autoimmune polyendocrinopathies and their predictive value in clinical strategies of disease development could be unravelled by analysing a larger sample of diseased patients and healthy individuals
Multiple Bulky Lymph Nodal Metastasis in Microinvasive Cervical Cancer: A Case Report and Literature Review
Microinvasive squamous cell cervival carcinoma is characterized by an exceptional incidence of lymph nodal metastasis. We report the case of a 45-year-old woman affected by IA1 squamous cell carcinoma, found to have massive pelvic lymph nodal metastasis. After a systematic pelvic and aortic selective lymphadenectomy, at 16 months of follow-up, she is still disease-free. Patients suitable for conservative therapy should be carefully counselled about the established risks and benefits of nondestructive treatment options
Cryopreservation protocol for human biliary tree stem/progenitors, hepatic and pancreatic precursors
Human biliary tree stem/progenitor cells (hBTSCs) are being used for cell therapies of patients with liver cirrhosis. A cryopreservation method was established to optimize sourcing of hBTSCs for these clinical programs and that comprises serum-free Kubota's Medium (KM) supplemented with 10% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), 15% human serum albumin (HSA) and 0.1% hyaluronans. Cryopreserved versus freshly isolated hBTSCs were similar in vitro with respect to self-replication, stemness traits, and multipotency. They were able to differentiate to functional hepatocytes, cholangiocytes or pancreatic islets, yielding similar levels of secretion of albumin or of glucose-inducible levels of insulin. Cryopreserved versus freshly isolated hBTSCs were equally able to engraft into immunocompromised mice yielding cells with human-specific gene expression and human albumin levels in murine serum that were higher for cryopreserved than for freshly isolated hBTSCs. The successful cryopreservation of hBTSCs facilitates establishment of hBTSCs cell banking offering logistical advantages for clinical programs for treatment of liver diseases

Caught by the fear of getting sick, some individuals have adopted behaviors which favored the development of exercise addiction (EA). Our aim was to evaluate physical activity habits and the risk of EA in the general Italian population during phase 1 of the lockdown. The role of appearance anxiety (AA), self-compassion, and use of performance and image enhancing drugs (PIEDs) as predictors of EA development were investigated. A comparison between physically active subjects with the inactive ones was also included. Between April and May 2020, an online survey was conducted across Italy. Nine hundred thirty-six answers were collected. The rate of EA in the physically active sample (782 subjects) was 4.1%. The physically active group showed higher SCS scores and a greater use of PIEDs. Of the physically active participants, 84.2% reported variations in their fitness routine. Perceived benefit of exercising resulted significantly higher in those with EA. Subjects with EA reported stronger motivation in engaging in physical activity as for “physical wellness,” “psychological well-being,” and “sexual attractiveness and confidence in relationship.” A higher level of AA, a lower level of self-compassion, and a higher perceived benefit of exercising during lockdown were all significant predictors for the presence of EA. Our findings suggest that the fear of getting sick from Covid-19, combined with radical changes in the lifestyles induced by the lockdown and individual personological characteristics, can favor the development of EA and related phenomena in the general population.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
Impact of P3HT Regioregularity and Molecular Weight on the Efficiency and Stability of Perovskite Solar Cells
The commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has seen an important limitation in the instability that afflicts the hole-transporting layer (HTL), namely, spiro- OMeTAD, used in high-efficiency devices. The latter is, in turn, relatively expensive, undermining the sustainability of the device. Its replacement with polymeric scaffolds, such as poly(3- hexylthiophene) (P3HT), will solve these issues. In this work, we adopted various sustainable synthetic methods to obtain four different homemade P3HTs with different molecular weights (MWs) and regioregularities (RRs), leading to different structural properties. They are implemented as HTLs in PSCs, and the effect of their properties on the efficiency and thermal stability of devices
is thoroughly discussed. The highest efficiency is obtained with the highest MW and low-RR polymer (17.6%) owing to the more sustainable approach, but a very promising value is also reached with a lower-MW but fully regioregular polymer (15%). Finally, large-area devices with an efficiency of 16.7%, fabricated with a high-MW P3HT, show more than 1000 h (T80 = 1108 h) of stability under accelerated thermal stress tests (85 °C) out of glovebox while keeping over 85% of the initial efficiency of an unencapsulated device after more than 3000 min under continuous light soaking (AM 1.5G)
