Correlation Inequalities for Quantum Spin Systems with Quenched Centered Disorder
It is shown that random quantum spin systems with centered disorder satisfy
correlation inequalities previously proved (arXiv:cond-mat/0612371) in the
classical case. Consequences include monotone approach of pressure and ground
state energy to the thermodynamic limit. Signs and bounds on the surface
pressures for different boundary conditions are also derived for finite range

Fiber Bragg Grating sensors for deformation monitoring of GEM foils in HEP detectors
Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors have been so far mainly used in high energy
physics (HEP) as high precision positioning and re-positioning sensors and as
low cost, easy to mount, radiation hard and low space- consuming temperature
and humidity devices. FBGs are also commonly used for very precise strain
measurements. In this work we present a novel use of FBGs as flatness and
mechanical tensioning sensors applied to the wide Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM)
foils of the GE1/1 chambers of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at
Large Hadron Collider (LHC) of CERN. A network of FBG sensors has been used to
determine the optimal mechanical tension applied and to characterize the
mechanical stress applied to the foils. The preliminary results of the test
performed on a full size GE1/1 final prototype and possible future developments

Eco-friendly gas mixtures for Resistive Plate Chambers based on Tetrafluoropropene and Helium
Due to the recent restrictions deriving from the application of the Kyoto
protocol, the main components of the gas mixtures presently used in the
Resistive Plate Chambers systems of the LHC experiments will be most probably
phased out of production in the coming years. Identifying possible replacements
with the adequate characteristics requires an intense R&D, which was recently
started, also in collaborations across the various experiments. Possible
candidates have been proposed and are thoroughly investigated. Some tests on
one of the most promising candidate - HFO-1234ze, an allotropic form of
tetrafluoropropane- have already been reported. Here an innovative approach,
based on the use of Helium, to solve the problems related to the too elevate
operating voltage of HFO-1234ze based gas mixtures, is discussed and the

Thermodynamic Limit for Spin Glasses. Beyond the Annealed Bound
Using a correlation inequality of Contucci and Lebowitz for spin glasses, we
demonstrate existence of the thermodynamic limit for short-ranged spin glasses,
under weaker hypotheses than previously available, namely without the

Cms gem detector material study for the hl-lhc
A study on the Gaseous Electron Multiplier (GEM) foil material is performed to determine the moisture diffusion rate, moisture saturation level and the effects on its mechanical properties. The study is focused on the foil contact with ambient air and moisture to determine the value of the diffusion coefficient of water in the foil material. The presence of water inside the detector foil can determine the changes in its mechanical and electrical properties. A simulated model is developed with COMSOL Multiphysics v. 4.3 [1] by taking into account the real GEM foil (hole dimensions, shapes and material), which describes the adsorption of water. This work describes the model, its experimental verification, the water diffusion within the entire sheet geometry of the GEM foil, thus gaining concentration profiles and the time required to saturate the system and the effects on the mechanical properties
Phase transitions in social sciences: two-populations mean field theory
A new mean field statistical mechanics model of two interacting groups of
spins is introduced and the phase transition studied in terms of their relative
size. A jump of the average magnetization is found for large values of the
mutual interaction when the relative percentage of the two populations crosses
a critical threshold. It is shown how the critical percentage depends on
internal interactions and on the initial magnetizations. The model is
interpreted as a prototype of resident-immigrant cultural interaction and
conclusions from the social sciences perspectives are drawn
Assessment of body fluid balance and voluntary drinking in ultimate players during a match.
AIM: Ultimate is a sport played by hundreds of thousands of people in more than 42 countries; however, it is still mainly known as a recreational more than a team sport, and further studies are needed to define its physical load.
Particularly, since no studies relating Ultimate to hydration have been performed, we aimed to determine body fluid balance, voluntary water intake and the most reliable method for assessing the hydration status of players after a
typical 80-minute Ultimate match.
METHODS: bioimpedance, urine specific gravity and body mass changes to asses the hydration level of the players were measured.
RESULTS: It was observed that not all of the methods are adequate to determine dehydration in Ultimate players, and that measurement of body mass changes represents a reliable and accurate technique.
CONCLUSIONS: These findings demonstrate that ultimate as an intense sport that can induce significant fluid loss, which is not always replaced by individual drinking
Replica equivalence in the Edwards-Anderson model
After introducing and discussing the "link-overlap" between spin
configurations we show that the Edwards-Anderson model has a
"replica-equivalent" quenched equilibrium state, a property introduced by
Parisi in the description of the mean-field spin-glass phase which generalizes
ultrametricity. Our argument is based on the control of fluctuations through
the property of stochastic stability and works for all the finite-dimensional
