Low-energy limit of the three-band model for electrons in a CuO2_{2} plane

The three-band model with the O-O direct hopping near to unit filling is considered. We present the general procedure of reduction of this model to the low-energy limit. At unit filling the three-band model in the charge-transfer limit is reduced to the Heisenberg model and we calculate the superexchange constant. For the case of the small electron doping the three-band model is reduced to the tJt-J model and we calculate electron hopping parameters at the nearest and next neighbors. We derive the structure of corrections to the tJt-J model and calculate their magnitude. The values of the hopping parameters for electron- and hole-doping differ approximately at 40 %.Comment: 10 pp. (LATEX

Nonlinear ion-acoustic (IA) waves driven in a cylindrically symmetric flow

By employing a self-similar, two-fluid MHD model in a cylindrical geometry, we study the features of nonlinear ion-acoustic (IA) waves which propagate in the direction of external magnetic field lines in space plasmas. Numerical calculations not only expose the well-known three shapes of nonlinear structures (sinusoidal, sawtooth, and spiky or bipolar) which are observed by numerous satellites and simulated by models in a Cartesian geometry, but also illustrate new results, such as, two reversely propagating nonlinear waves, density dips and humps, diverging and converging electric shocks, etc. A case study on Cluster satellite data is also introduced.Comment: accepted by AS

Reducing the environmental impact of surgery on a global scale: systematic review and co-prioritization with healthcare workers in 132 countries

Background Healthcare cannot achieve net-zero carbon without addressing operating theatres. The aim of this study was to prioritize feasible interventions to reduce the environmental impact of operating theatres. Methods This study adopted a four-phase Delphi consensus co-prioritization methodology. In phase 1, a systematic review of published interventions and global consultation of perioperative healthcare professionals were used to longlist interventions. In phase 2, iterative thematic analysis consolidated comparable interventions into a shortlist. In phase 3, the shortlist was co-prioritized based on patient and clinician views on acceptability, feasibility, and safety. In phase 4, ranked lists of interventions were presented by their relevance to high-income countries and low–middle-income countries. Results In phase 1, 43 interventions were identified, which had low uptake in practice according to 3042 professionals globally. In phase 2, a shortlist of 15 intervention domains was generated. In phase 3, interventions were deemed acceptable for more than 90 per cent of patients except for reducing general anaesthesia (84 per cent) and re-sterilization of ‘single-use’ consumables (86 per cent). In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for high-income countries were: introducing recycling; reducing use of anaesthetic gases; and appropriate clinical waste processing. In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for low–middle-income countries were: introducing reusable surgical devices; reducing use of consumables; and reducing the use of general anaesthesia. Conclusion This is a step toward environmentally sustainable operating environments with actionable interventions applicable to both high– and low–middle–income countries

Fattening heifers for the summer or early fall market

    No full text
The two preceding tests with heifer calves were conducted without the use of grass. Varying amounts of grain and protein supplements were fed with silage during the winter season and then a full feed of grain was used to finish these heifers for the summer or early fall market. Now that experimental pasture is available, plans are to develop a system of fattening heifers for the summer market or early fall market which uses grass to the fullest extent. Dry lot feeding will continue as a check
