    A unified two-scale gas-liquid multi-fluid model with capillarity and interface regularization through a mass transfer between scales

    In this contribution, we derive a gas-liquid two-scale multi-fluid model with capillarity effects along with a novel interface regularization approach. We introduce this unified modelling capable of encompassing the interface representation of both separated and disperse regimes, as it occurs in atomization processes. Above a preset length threshold at large scale, a multi-fluid diffuse interface model resolves the dynamics of the interface while, at smallscale, a set of geometric variables is used to characterize the interface geometry. These variables result from a reduced-order modelling of the small-scale kinetic equation that describes a collection of liquid inclusions. The flow model can be viewed as a two-phase two-scale mixture, and the equations of motion are obtained thanks to the Hamilton's Stationary Action Principle, which requires to specify the kinetic and potential energies at play. We particularly focus on modelling the effects of capillarity on the mixture's energy by including dependencies on additional variables accounting for the interface's geometry at both scales. The regularization of the largescale interface is then introduced as a local and dissipative process. The local curvature is limited via a relaxation toward a modified Laplace equilibrium such that an inter-scale mass transfer is triggered when the mean curvature is too high. We propose an original numerical method and assess the properties and potential of the modelling strategy on the relevant test-case of a two-dimensional liquid column in a compressible gas flow

    Randomized trial of the effect of antipyresis by metamizol, propacetamol or external cooling on metabolism, hemodynamics and inflammatory response

    Objective: We investigated the metabolic, hemodynamic, and inflammatory responses of pharmacological and physical therapies aimed at reducing body temperature in febrile critically ill patients. Design and setting: Open-label, randomized trial in a surgical ICU in a tertiary university hospital. Patients: Thirty analgosedated, mechanically ventilated patients with a temperature of 38.5°C or higher were randomized to receive either intravenous metamizol, intravenous propacetamol, or external cooling. Measurements and results: Body temperature and metabolic and hemodynamic variables were recorded at baseline and during the following 4h. Cytokine concentrations were assessed before and 4 and 12h after the initiation of antipyresis. Body temperature decreased significantly in all treatment groups. For a 1°C temperature decrease, the energy expenditure index increased by 5% with external cooling and decreased by 7% and 8% in the metamizol and propacetamol groups, respectively. Metamizol induced a significant decrease in mean arterial pressure and urine output compared to baseline and to the other two groups. C-reactive protein increased over time, but compared to the other groups it was significantly lower in patients receiving metamizol after 4h. Cytokine concentrations were not different among the three groups or over time, although interleukin 6 tended to decrease over time in the metamizol group. Conclusions: Metamizol, propacetamol, and external cooling equally reduced temperature. Considering the undesirable hemodynamic effects, metamizol should not be considered the first antipyretic choice in unstable patients. Propacetamol or external cooling should be preferred, although the latter should be avoided in patients unlikely to tolerate the increased metabolic demand induced by external coolin

    An acoustic-transport splitting method for the barotropic Baer-Nunziato two-phase flow model*

    This work focuses on the numerical approximation of the barotropic Baer-Nunziato two-phase flow model. We propose a numerical scheme that relies on an operator splitting method corresponding to a separate treatment of the acoustic and the material transport phenomena. In the subsonic case, this also corresponds to a separate treatment of the fast and the slow propagation phenomena. This approach follows the lines of the implicit-explicit schemes developed in [8]. The operator splitting enable the use of time steps that are no longer constrained by the sound velocity thanks to an implicit treatment of the acoustic waves, while maintaining accuracy in the subsonic regime thanks to an explicit treatment of the material waves. In the present setting, a particular attention will be also given to the discretization of the non-conservative terms that figure in the two-phase model. We prove that the proposed numerical strategy is positivity preserving for the volume fractions and the partial masses. The scheme is tested against several one-dimensional test cases including flows featuring vanishing phases

    The probability distribution of the conductance at the mobility edge, pc(g)p_c(g), in different universality classes and dimensions is investigated numerically for a variety of random systems. It is shown that pc(g)p_c(g) is universal for systems of given symmetry, dimensionality, and boundary conditions. An analytical form of pc(g)p_c(g) for small values of gg is discussed and agreement with numerical data is observed. For g>1g > 1, ln⁡pc(g)\ln p_c(g) is proportional to (g−1)(g-1) rather than (g−1)2(g-1)^2.Comment: 4 pages REVTeX, 5 figures and 2 tables include

    French Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire Compared with an Accelerometer Cut Point to Classify Physical Activity among Pregnant Obese Women

    Given the high risk for inactivity during pregnancy in obese women, validated questionnaires for physical activity (PA) assessment in this specific population is required before evaluating the effect of PA on perinatal outcomes. No questionnaire was validated in pregnant obese women. The Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire (PPAQ) has been designed based on activities reported during pregnancy and validated in pregnant women. We translated the PPAQ to French and assessed reliability and accuracy of this French version among pregnant obese women. In this cross-sectional study, pregnant obese women were evenly recruited at the end of each trimester of pregnancy. They completed the PPAQ twice, with an interval of 7 days in-between, to recall PA of the last three months. Between PPAQ assessments, participants wore an accelerometer (Actigraph GT1M) during 7 consecutive days. Fourty-nine (49) pregnant obese women (29.8±4.2 yrs, 34.7±5.1 kg.m−2) participated to the study. The intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) between the two PPAQ assessments were 0.90 for total activity, 0.86 for light and for moderate intensity, and 0.81 for vigorous intensity activities. It ranged from 0.59 for “Transportation” to 0.89 for “Household and Caregiving” activities. Spearman correlation coefficients (SCCs) between the PPAQ and the Matthews’ cut point used to classify an activity of moderate and above intensity were 0.50 for total activity, 0.25 for vigorous intensity and 0.40 for moderate intensity. The correlations between the PPAQ and the accelerometer counts were 0.58 for total activity, 0.39 for vigorous intensity and 0.49 for moderate intensity. The highest SCCs were for “Occupation” and “Household and Caregiving” activities. Comparisons with other standard cutpoints were presented in files S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S6, S7. The PPAQ is reliable and moderately accurate for the measure of PA of various intensities and types among pregnant obese women

    Network models for localisation problems belonging to the chiral symmetry classes

    We consider localisation problems belonging to the chiral symmetry classes, in which sublattice symmetry is responsible for singular behaviour at a band centre. We formulate models which have the relevant symmetries and which are generalisations of the network model introduced previously in the context of the integer quantum Hall plateau transition. We show that the generalisations required can be re-expressed as corresponding to the introduction of absorption and amplification into either the original network model, or the variants of it that represent disordered superconductors. In addition, we demonstrate that by imposing appropriate constraints on disorder, a lattice version of the Dirac equation with a random vector potential can be obtained, as well as new types of critical behaviour. These models represent a convenient starting point for analytic discussions and computational studies, and we investigate in detail a two-dimensional example without time-reversal invariance. It exhibits both localised and critical phases, and band-centre singularities in the critical phase approach more closely in small systems the expected asymptotic form than in other known realisations of the symmetry class.Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures, Submitted to Physical Review
