Social inequality and educational decisions over the life course. An educational sociology perspective

Der vorliegende Beitrag setzt sich das Ziel, auf der Grundlage soziologischer Theorien und ausgewählter Forschungsergebnisse den Einfluss der Familie auf die Bildungschancen der Kinder aus einer Lebensverlaufsperspektive aufzuzeigen. Im Vordergrund stehen dabei die sogenannten primären, sekundären und tertiären Effekte der sozialen Herkunft. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass in Deutschland die soziale Herkunft noch immer zu den wichtigsten Faktoren gehört, die die Bildungschancen von Schülern beeinflussen. Dabei beeinflusst die Herkunftsfamilie die Bildungskarriere kumulativ. Auch über die Kohorten hinweg ist die Wirkung der sozialen Herkunft auf die Bildungschancen relativ stabil. (DIPF/Orig.)Based on sociological theories and selected empirical research findings, this article aims to outline how families influence their children’s educational opportunities from a life-course perspective. The focus of this contribution is on the so-called primary, secondary and tertiary effects of social origin. The results show that social background is still one of the most important factors that influence educational opportunities of students in Germany. The influence of social origin on educational careers is cumulative. Across cohorts, the impact of social background on educational opportunities seems to be relatively stable. (DIPF/Orig.
