    Microwave properties of (PrxY1x)Ba2Cu3O7δ(Pr_xY_{1-x})Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} : Influence of magnetic scattering

    We report measurements of the surface impedance Zs=Rs+iXsZ_s=R_s+iX_s of (PrxY1x)Ba2Cu3O7δ(Pr_xY_{1-x})Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}, (x=0,0.15,0.23,0.3,0.4,0.5)(x=0,0.15,0.23,0.3,0.4,0.5). Increasing PrPr concentration leads to some striking results not observed in samples doped by non-magnetic constituents. The three principal features of the Rs(T)R_s(T) data - multiple structure in the transition, a high residual resistance and, at high PrPr concentrations, an upturn of the low TT data, are all characteristic of the influence of magnetic scattering on superconductivity, and appear to be common to materials where magnetism and superconductivity coexist. The low TT behavior of λ(T)\lambda (T) appears to change from TT to T4T^4 at large PrPr doping, and provides evidence of the influence of magnetic pairbreaking of the PrPr.Comment: 5 pages, 3 eps figures, Revtex, 2-column format, uses graphicx.     Formate Over-Oxidation Limits Industrialization of Glycerol Oxidation Paired with Carbon Dioxide Reduction to Formate

    Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction processes are generally coupled with the oxidation of water. Process economics can greatly improve by replacing the water oxidation with a more valuable oxidation reaction, a process called paired electrolysis. Here we report the feasibility of pairing CO2 reduction with the oxidation of glycerol on Ni3S2/NF anodes to produce formate at both anode and cathode. Initially we optimized the oxidation of glycerol to maximize the Faraday efficiency to formate by using design of experiments. In flow cell electrolysis, excellent selectivity (up to 90 % Faraday efficiency) was achieved at high current density (150 mA/cm2 of geometric surface area). Then we successfully paired the reduction of CO2 with the oxidation of glycerol. A prerequisite for industrial application is to obtain reaction mixtures with a high concentration of formate to enable efficient downstream separation. We show that the anodic process is limited in formate concentration, as Faraday efficiency to formate greatly decreases when operating at 2.5 M formate (∼10 w%) in the reaction mixture due to over-oxidation of formate. We identify this as a major bottleneck for the industrial feasibility of this paired electrolysis process.</p

    Genetics of tension-type headache

    The objective of this study was to investigate the importance of genetics in tension-type headache. A MEDLINE search from 1966 to December 2006 was performed for “tension-type headache and prevalence” and “tension-type headache and genetics” The prevalence of tensiontype headache varies from 11 to 93%, with a slight female preponderance. Co-occurrence of migraine increases the frequency of tension-type headache. A family study of chronic tension-type headache suggests that genetic factors are important. A twin study analysing tension-type headache in migraineurs found that genetic factors play a minor role in episodic tension-type headache. Another twin study analysing twin pairs without co-occurrence of migraine showed a significantly higher concordance rate among monozygotic than same-gender dizygotic twin pairs with no or frequent episodic tension-type headache, while the difference was minor in twin pairs with infrequent episodic tensiontype headache. Frequent episodic and chronic tension-type headache is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, while infrequent episodic tensiontype headache is caused primarily by environmental factors

    This paper is the third in a sequel to develop a super-analogue of the classical Selberg trace formula, the Selberg supertrace formula. It deals with bordered super Riemann surfaces. The theory of bordered super Riemann surfaces is outlined, and the corresponding Selberg supertrace formula is developed. The analytic properties of the Selberg super zeta-functions on bordered super Riemann surfaces are discussed, and super-determinants of Dirac-Laplace operators on bordered super Riemann surfaces are calculated in terms of Selberg super zeta-functions.Comment: 43 pages, amste

    1/f Noise in Electron Glasses

    We show that 1/f noise is produced in a 3D electron glass by charge fluctuations due to electrons hopping between isolated sites and a percolating network at low temperatures. The low frequency noise spectrum goes as \omega^{-\alpha} with \alpha slightly larger than 1. This result together with the temperature dependence of \alpha and the noise amplitude are in good agreement with the recent experiments. These results hold true both with a flat, noninteracting density of states and with a density of states that includes Coulomb interactions. In the latter case, the density of states has a Coulomb gap that fills in with increasing temperature. For a large Coulomb gap width, this density of states gives a dc conductivity with a hopping exponent of approximately 0.75 which has been observed in recent experiments.     Inhibiting decoherence via ancilla processes

    General conditions are derived for preventing the decoherence of a single two-state quantum system (qubit) in a thermal bath. The employed auxiliary systems required for this purpose are merely assumed to be weak for the general condition while various examples such as extra qubits and extra classical fields are studied for applications in quantum information processing. The general condition is confirmed with well known approaches towards inhibiting decoherence. A novel approach for decoherence-free quantum memories and quantum operations is presented by placing the qubit into the center of a sphere with extra qubits on its surface.Comment: pages 8, Revtex

    Isotope Effect for the Penetration Depth in Superconductors

    We show that various factors can lead to an isotopic dependence of the penetration depth δ\delta. Non-adiabaticity (Jahn-Teller crossing) leads to the isotope effect of the charge carrier concentration nn and, consequently, of δ\delta in doped superconductors such as the cuprates. A general equation relating the isotope coefficients of TcT_c and of δ\delta is presented for London superconductors. We further show that the presence of magnetic impurities or a proximity contact also lead to an isotopic dependence of δ\delta; the isotope coefficient turns out to be temperature dependent, β(T)\beta(T), in these cases. The existence of the isotope effect for the penetration depth is predicted for conventional as well as for high-temperature superconductors.
