    Stress Increases Peripheral Axon Growth and Regeneration Through Glucocorticoid Receptor-Dependent Transcriptional Programs

    Stress and glucocorticoid (GC) release are common behavioral and hormonal responses to injury or disease. In the brain, stress/GCs can alter neuron structure and function leading to cognitive impairment. Stress and GCs also exacerbate pain, but whether a corresponding change occurs in structural plasticity of sensory neurons is unknown. Here, we show that in female mice (Mus musculus) basal GC receptor (Nr3c1, also known as GR) expression in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) sensory neurons is 15-fold higher than in neurons in canonical stress-responsive brain regions (M. musculus). In response to stress or GCs, adult DRG neurite growth increases through mechanisms involving GR-dependent gene transcription. In vivo, prior exposure to an acute systemic stress increases peripheral nerve regeneration. These data have broad clinical implications and highlight the importance of stress and GCs as novel behavioral and circulating modifiers of neuronal plasticity

    A Generalized Bandsplit Neural Network for Cinematic Audio Source Separation

    Cinematic audio source separation is a relatively new subtask of audio source separation, with the aim of extracting the dialogue, music, and effects stems from their mixture. In this work, we developed a model generalizing the Bandsplit RNN for any complete or overcomplete partitions of the frequency axis. Psychoacoustically motivated frequency scales were used to inform the band definitions which are now defined with redundancy for more reliable feature extraction. A loss function motivated by the signal-to-noise ratio and the sparsity-promoting property of the 1-norm was proposed. We additionally exploit the information-sharing property of a common-encoder setup to reduce computational complexity during both training and inference, improve separation performance for hard-to-generalize classes of sounds, and allow flexibility during inference time with detachable decoders. Our best model sets the state of the art on the Divide and Remaster dataset with performance above the ideal ratio mask for the dialogue stem

    Spectral Characterization of a Blue-Enhanced

    In this paper, we report on spectral response data and gamma ray spectroscopy measurements using two newly developed silicon photodetectors that are designed to have enhanced sensitivity in the blue spectral region. The enhanced sensitivity is a result of our newly developed ion implantation profile used to create the active area of the photodetector. The quantum efficiency of the new photodetectors (without any optimized antireflective coating) has been measured to be 40% at a wavelength of 420 nm. Gamma ray spectroscopy experiments have been performed using a thallium doped cesium iodide, [CsI(Tl)], and a cerium doped lutetium oxy-orthosilicate, (LSO) crystal excited by a Cs or 22 Na source and read out by the new photodetectors. We have measured an energy resolution of 7.7% and 22.7% full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) for the 662-keV gamma rays from a Cs for the CsI(Tl) and LSO scintillator crystal respectively. We intend to use the photodetectors, in the form of a detector array optically coupled to CsI(Tl) or LSO, in the development of a new scintillator detector module for use in positron emission tomography (PET)

    Clinical and radiological outcome of the treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head using the osteonecrosis intervention implant

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcome of the treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head by implantation of an osteonecrosis intervention rod. In this retrospective study the follow-up of 19 patients with 23 osteonecrotic femoral heads treated with implantation of an osteonecrosis intervention implant was assessed. From 19 patients with 23 necrotic femoral heads, there were 13 cases in which a total hip replacement was necessary. This implies a survival rate of 44% after implantation of an osteonecrosis intervention rod after a mean follow-up of 1.45 years. The outcome after core decompression combined with the insertion of a tantalum osteonecrosis intervention implant did not show superior results compared to core decompression alone. This is in contrast to existing studies. In addition, this study showed that in cases of total hip replacement, no problems appeared during explantation of the tantalum rod

    DTFH61-69-C-00058The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has begun a number of initiatives to improve signing on the Nation's roadways. These include workshops to obtain input from experts across the country, a review of each State's highway sign replacement and refurbishing program, and a training course. This report documents the proceedings of the workshops, one held in the Western United States and one in the Eastern United States. The workshops opened with a plenary session on Issues, Needs, and the FHWA Research Program, followed by a plenary session on Development of Minimum Requirements. The program continued with a panel discussion on Performance Standard Criteria, followed by a plenary session on Materials Selection. Breakout sessions on freeway signing, non-freeway signing, and motorist services and tourist-oriented signing completed the first day of the workshops. The second day opened with reports of the breakout sessions and continued with a plenary session on Field Assessment Techniques. A plenary session on Maintenance Procedures and Programs followed. The second day ended with breakout sessions on sign replacement methods, using contracting versus in-house and prison industries, and traffic control during sign replacement. The third day opened with reports on the previous day's breakout sessions, followed by a plenary session on Improved Inventory Techniques. The workshops closed with a look to the future plenary session. This report details the remarks made by the panelists and the comments and concerns of the participants on each of these issues
