    Olfaction Contributes to Pelagic Navigation in a Coastal Shark.

    How animals navigate the constantly moving and visually uniform pelagic realm, often along straight paths between distant sites, is an enduring mystery. The mechanisms enabling pelagic navigation in cartilaginous fishes are particularly understudied. We used shoreward navigation by leopard sharks (Triakis semifasciata) as a model system to test whether olfaction contributes to pelagic navigation. Leopard sharks were captured alongshore, transported 9 km offshore, released, and acoustically tracked for approximately 4 h each until the transmitter released. Eleven sharks were rendered anosmic (nares occluded with cotton wool soaked in petroleum jelly); fifteen were sham controls. Mean swimming depth was 28.7 m. On average, tracks of control sharks ended 62.6% closer to shore, following relatively straight paths that were significantly directed over spatial scales exceeding 1600 m. In contrast, tracks of anosmic sharks ended 37.2% closer to shore, following significantly more tortuous paths that approximated correlated random walks. These results held after swimming paths were adjusted for current drift. This is the first study to demonstrate experimentally that olfaction contributes to pelagic navigation in sharks, likely mediated by chemical gradients as has been hypothesized for birds. Given the similarities between the fluid three-dimensional chemical atmosphere and ocean, further research comparing swimming and flying animals may lead to a unifying paradigm explaining their extraordinary navigational abilities

    Annotated checklist of marine fishes from the Sanctuary of BahĂ­a Chamela, Mexico with occurrence and biogeographic data.

    An annotated checklist of marine fishes of the Sanctuary of Islands and Islets of BahĂ­a Chamela in the central Mexican Pacific is presented. Records of fish species were obtained by different methods including visual census, sampling with anesthetics, fisherman-nets, and trawling with a biological dredge. Additional records were obtained from natural history collections and publications. The list comprises 196 species in 64 families and 141 genera. The Carangidae is the most speciose family with 11 species, followed by the Labridae with 10 and the Pomacentridae with nine. Fourteen species are endemic in Mexican Pacific waters, but none is restricted to BahĂ­a Chamela. The most dominant species recorded during underwater surveys were Epinephelus labriformis, Stegastes flavilatus, and Halichoeres dispilus. Most species are of tropical affinities distributed throughout the tropical eastern Pacific (123), eastern Pacific (23), and Mexican Pacific (14). Other species are known from the eastern and Indo-Pacific regions (18), eastern Pacific and western Atlantic oceans (2), and some are circumtropical (9). A new record of the Gulf Brotula Ogilbia ventralis is provided for the BahĂ­a Chamela and its geographical distribution is extended to Mexican central Pacific

    The behaviour of short fatigue cracks in a beta-processed titanium alloy

    An investigation has been made into the behaviour of short fatigue cracks in the β-processed titanium alloy, Ti6Ss. The effect on the material of a number of different variables was studied, particularly microstructure, as well as stress level, specimen design and specimen size. Initiation of cracks was found to occur at similar microstructural features in smooth specimens, regardless of a-platelet morphology. Cracks initiated from slip bands across small bundles of α-platelets, despite the presence of longer, more intense slip bands across α-colonies. α-platelet morphology was found to have a significant effect on short crack propagation rates when crack length was of the order of, or less than, the α-colony size - the more aligned the α-platelets, the greater the short crack propagation rates at equivalent ΔKs. Increasing the prior β-grain size (and hence the a-colony size) led to higher short crack propagation rates at equivalent ΔKs. Specimen design appeared to have an effect on short crack growth rates a uniaxial tension specimen design gave slightly higher growth rates than a four point bend specimen design. Variation in specimen size had no effect on short crack growth rates for the same microstructural condition, but a larger specimen size was found to reduce the scatter in specimen lives observed in smaller specimens. Short crack growth rates were apparently insensitive to stress level when compared at the same nominal ΔK values. Crack shape was found to vary considerably at crack depths below approximately 0.75mm. At crack depths greater than this value, cracks took an approximately semi-circular form. In keeping with many recent studies of short crack behaviour, short cracks were found to grow faster than long cracks at the same nominal ΔKs and at ΔKs below the long crack threshold value, ΔKth· A case study was carried out to determine the behaviour of short cracks in a cheese forged from an ingot slice of IMI685. Crack growth behaviour was found to be the same as that of Ti65s, but initiation behaviour was affected by the presence of pores in the IMI68S, leading to a significant reduction in fatigue life

    O trabalho pretende realizar um estudo comparativo entre a crise financeira asiática, que afetou majoritariamente Tailândia, Filipinas, Coréia do Sul, Indonésia e Malásia e a crise cambial brasileira, ambas ocorridas no final da década de 90, utilizando como referência teórica as idéias centrais de alguns modelos de crises em países emergentes e como referência empírica as variáveis macroeconômicas, comerciais e fiscais das duas regiões, referentes a segunda metade da década de 90. Os resultados levam a crer que o componente contágio, decorrente de situação externa desfavorável, esteve bastante presente nas duas crises, principalmente a brasileira. No entanto, os maiores culpados foram os respectivos condutores de política econômica

    The Pelagic - Sargassum Ichthyofauna of the Eastern Gulf of Mexico

    A total of 2857 fishes comprising 15 families and 40 species was collected at 62 localities in the eastern Gulf of Mexico between 1971 and 1976. The fauna was dominated by the Carangidae, Balistidae, and Syngnathidae. Monacanthus hispidus was the most abundant species and comprised 84.5% of the total fauna. Species diversity (H\u27) was variable within the Gulf and low in comparison with the western Atlantic Sargassum - associated ichthyofauna. Index of Affinity was high within the Gulf due to the abundance of M. hispidus. Perhaps conditions associated with community dispersal, for which M. hispidus is better adapted, permit this species to dominate this community. Additionally, species diversity differences may be due to substrate area or clumpsize
