Adaptive high-order finite element solution of transient elastohydrodynamic lubrication problems

    Get PDF
This article presents a new numerical method to solve transient line contact elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) problems. A high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element method is used for the spatial discretization, and the standard Crank-Nicolson method is employed to approximate the time derivative. An h-adaptivity method is used for grid adaptation with the time-stepping, and the penalty method is employed to handle the cavitation condition. The roughness model employed here is a simple indentation, which is located on the upper surface. Numerical results are presented comparing the DG method to standard finite difference (FD) techniques. It is shown that micro-EHL features are captured with far fewer degrees of freedom than when using low-order FD methods

The synthesis of new 2-acylcyclopentane-1,3-diones with a saturated С9–С12 acyl chain was described. The compounds were synthesized by the O-acylation of cyclopentane-1,3-dione with appropriate acyl chlorides in the presence of pyridine in chloroform, followed by the O–C- isomerization of the prepared enol acylates under the action of acetone cyanohydrin in acetonitrile in the presence of triethylamine.

Nonlinear optics of molecular nanostructures in solution: Assessment of the size and nonlinear optical properties

    No full text
Most of the known self-assembly processes occur in solution, where nanosized objects interact each other forming new structures. Their real-time characterization in terms of the size and optical properties of these objects is vital for understanding those interactions. We report a novel application of nonlinear optics to study molecular structures and assemblies. By measuring the power of the third harmonic generated in a solution of nanoparticles, we determined both the size and the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of those nanoparticles. The newly developed technique was successfully employed to observe the structural organization of collagen (type I) molecules in solution
