The United States and Canada: State Policy and Strategic Perspectives on Capital in Central America

SUMMARY Central America has been directly affected by the global economic crisis and, particularly, by the crisis of US hegemony. This article examines the interests and strategies of North American capital in Central America and discusses points of divergence and accommodation between Canadian and US state policy with respect to the region. RESUMEN Estados Unidos y Canadá: política estatal y perspectivas estratégicas sobre el capital en Centroamérica Centroamérica ha sido afectada directamente por la crisis económica global y, particularmente, por la crisis de la hegemonía estadounidense. Este artículo examina los intereses y estrategias del capital norteamericano en Centroamérica y analiza puntos coincidentes y divergentes que existen en las políticas estatales de Canadá y Estados Unidos respecto de la región. THE SOCIOLOGY OF KNOWLEDGE IN AMERICAN SOCIOLOGY: ORIGINS, DEVELOPMENT, AND FUTURE

This paper examines the origins, development, and current status of the sociology of knowledge in American sociology. If a traditional and narrow definition of the sociology of knowledge is employed, few American studies appear to fall into this area of interest. However, when the sociology of knowledge is defined as a general frame of reference that is utilized in various research endeavors, definite orientations can be recognized. Most studies are seen as falling under one or more of the questions posed by Robert K. Merton in his paradigm for the sociology of knowledge. This article analyzes the December2007 Venezuelan referendum aspart of the ongoing process of socialtransformations in the country. Afterpresenting the key constitutional reformssupporting Chavez’s socialistproject and the oppositional groups’attempts for military intervention, thecauses and consequences of the electoraldefeat are discussed. A partir da segunda metade dos anos 1990, o Brasil testemunhou uma impressionante reviravolta  socioeconômica, produzindo um declínio absoluto e relativo da produção industrial, consolidando o capitalismo extrativo e transformando o país em um exportador de commodites. Esse processo implicou em um grande retrocesso que foi aprofundado e expandido após a vitória eleitoral do PT, em 2002. Tendo como ponto de partida essa reflexão o artigo analisa os fatores que contribuem para o declínio e estagnação do modelo extrativista nos anos 2012­-2013 e o surgimento dos protestos em massa
