    Group VIII Coordination Chemistry of a Pincer-Type Bis(8-quinolinyl)amido Ligand

    This paper provides an entry point to the coordination chemistry of the group VIII chemistry of the bis(8-quinolinyl)amine (BQA) ligand. In this context, mono- and disubstituted BQA complexes of iron, ruthenium, and osmium are described. For example, the low-spin bis-ligated Fe(III) complex [Fe(BQA)2][BPh4] has been prepared via amine addition to FeCl3 in the presence of a base and NaBPh4. Complexes featuring a single BQA ligand are more readily prepared for Ru and Os. Auxiliary ligands featuring a single BQA ligand, along with two other L-type donor ligands, allow for a variety of ligand types to occupy a sixth coordination site. Representative examples include the halide and pseudohalide complexes trans-(BQA)MX(PPh3)2 (M = Ru, Os; X = Cl, Br, N3, OTf), as well as the hydride and alkyl complexes trans-(BQA)RuH(PMe3)2 and trans-(BQA)RuMe(PMe3)2. Electrochemical studies are discussed that help to contextualize the BQA ligand with respect to its neutral counterpart 2,2′,2′′-terpyridine (terpy) in terms of electron-releasing character. Bidentate ligands have been explored in conjunction with the BQA ligand. Thus, the bidentate, monoanionic aryl(8-quinolinyl)amido ligand 3,5-(CF3)2-(C6H3)QA has been installed onto the (BQA)Ru platform to provide (BQA)Ru(3,5-(CF3)2-(C6H3)QA)(PPh3). A bis(phosphino)borate ligand stabilizes the five-coordinate complex [Ph2B(CH2PPh2)2]Ru(BQA). Finally, access to dinitrogen complexes of the types [(BQA)Ru(N2)(PPh3)2][PF6], [(BQA)Ru(N2)(PMe3)2][PF6], and [(BQA)Os(N2)(PPh3)2][PF6] is provided by exposure of the sixth coordination site under a N2 atmosphere

    The Caribbean Community is in transition, moving toward a liberalized trade environment with low tariffs. Tax reform is at the forefront of the policy response since traditional sources of tax revenue such as import duties are on the decline. This paper evaluates the suitability of the VAT to countries of the Caribbean Community. We examine theoretical arguments, practical experiences of the Caribbean with the VAT and the economic and tax characteristics of the Caribbean.     The age of the surf clam (Spisula solidissima) can be determined with the use of the Digital Image Processor. This technique is used in conjunction with a modified method for aging, refined by John Ropes of the Woods Hole Laboratory, Massachusetts. This method utilizes a thinned sectioned chondrophore of the surf clam which contains annual rings. The rings of the chondrophore are then counted to determine age. By digitizing the chondrophore, the Digital Image Processor is clearly able to separate these annual rings more accurately. This technique produces an easier and more efficient way to count annual rings to determine the age of the surf clam

    Low Frequency Gravitational Waves from Black Hole MACHO Binaries

    Nakamura, Sasaki, Tanaka, and Thorne have recently estimated the initial distribution of binary MACHOs in the galactic halo assuming that the MACHOs are primordial half solar mass black holes, and considered their coalescence as a possible source for ground-based interferometer gravitational wave detectors such as LIGO. Evolving their binary distribution forward in time to the present, the low-frequency (10^{-5} < f < 10^{-1} Hz) spectrum of gravitational waves associated with such a population of compact binaries is calculated. The resulting gravitational waves would form a strong stochastic background in proposed space interferometers such as LISA and OMEGA. Low frequency gravitational waves are likely to become a key tool for determining the properties of binaries within the dark MACHO population.Comment: 8 pages + 2 ps figures; AASTe

The program had three phases. The details of the results of this program are contained in interim reports prepared at the conclusion of each of the three phases. This final report is intended to summarize the efforts and results described in detail in each of these interim reports, with particular emphasis on the differences observed between the ground-based and Skylab flight specimens
