HST-NICMOS Observations of Terzan 5: Stellar Content and Structure of the Core
We report results from HST-NICMOS imaging of the extremely dense core of the
globular cluster Terzan 5. This highly obscured bulge cluster has been
estimated to have one of the highest collision rates of any galactic globular
cluster, making its core a particularly conducive environment for the
production of interacting binary systems. We have reconstructed high-resolution
images of the central 19"x19" region of Terzan 5 by application of the drizzle
algorithm to dithered NIC2 images in the F110W, F187W, and F187N near-infrared
filters. We have used a DAOPHOT/ALLSTAR analysis of these images to produce the
deepest color-magnitude diagram (CMD) yet obtained for the core of Terzan 5. We
have also analyzed the parallel 11"X11" NIC1 field, centered 30" from the
cluster center and imaged in F110W and F160W, and an additional NIC2 field that
is immediately adjacent to the central field. This imaging results in a clean
detection of the red-giant branch and horizontal branch in the central NIC2
field, and the detection of these plus the main-sequence turnoff and the upper
main sequence in the NIC1 field. We have constructed an H versus J-H CMD for
the NIC1 field. We obtain a new distance estimate of 8.7 kpc, which places
Terzan 5 within less than 1 kpc of the galactic center. We have also determined
a central surface-density profile which results in a maximum likelihood
estimate of 7.9" +/- 0.6" for the cluster core radius. We discuss the

Development of an open-source, flexible framework for complex inter-institutional disparate data sharing and collaboration
Clinical information, “-omic” datasets, and tissue samples are difficult to harmonize and manage for data mining. We have developed a platform for storing clinical research data while providing access to associated data from other information stores. Data on 34 metrics from 11,000 neuroblastoma patients were instantiated into a database. The Django web framework was used to create a model for rapid development of tools and views with a front-end interface for generating complex queries. Working with Nationwide Children’s Hospital, we can now consume their tissue inventory data through an API. The end-user sees the number of patients who both match their search and have tissue available. Since initial implementation, the current tasks revolve around developing a governance structure and the necessary data use agreements. Efforts now are to (1) update the data with 5000 more patients, and (2) link to genomic data stores, facilitating disparate data acquisition for research studies
Chandra X-Ray Observatory Observations of the Globular Cluster M71
We observed the nearby, low-density globular cluster M71 (NGC 6838) with the
Chandra X-ray Observatory to study its faint X-ray populations. Five X-ray
sources were found inside the cluster core radius, including the known
eclipsing binary millisecond pulsar (MSP) PSR J1953+1846A. The X-ray light
curve of the source coincident with this MSP shows marginal evidence for
periodicity at the binary period of 4.2 h. Its hard X-ray spectrum and
luminosity resemble those of other eclipsing binary MSPs in 47 Tuc, suggesting
a similar shock origin of the X-ray emission. A further 24 X-ray sources were
found within the half-mass radius, reaching to a limiting luminosity of 1.5
10^30 erg/s (0.3-8 keV). From a radial distribution analysis, we find that
18+/-6 of these 29 sources are associated with M71, somewhat more than
predicted, and that 11+/-6 are background sources, both galactic and
extragalactic. M71 appears to have more X-ray sources between L_X=10^30--10^31
erg/s than expected by extrapolating from other studied clusters using either
mass or collision frequency. We explore the spectra and variability of these

Dyadic Interaction: Greater than the Sum of its Parts?
The study of dyadic interaction plays a major role in infancy research. To advance conceptually-informed measurement of dyadic interaction and integration across studies, we examined factor structure of individual parents’ and infants’ measures and dyadic measures from face-to-face interactions in two samples of 6-mo-old infants and their parents: mothers from a demographically heterogeneous sample (N = 164) and mothers and fathers (N = 156) from a Caucasian middle-class sample. Results suggested: a) individual and dyadic measures, and parents’ and infants’ behaviors contribute independent information, b) measures of both valence and process are needed, c) there are context-general and context-specific qualities, and d) structure of dyadic interaction is more similar among mother-infant dyads from independent samples than between mother- and father-infant dyads within the same sample. Future research should use multiple measures incorporating valence, temporal processes, contextual influences, and behaviors of individual partners along with dyadic measures to adequately assess the quality of dyadic interaction

Randomized Trial of Intravenous Versus Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy Plus Bevacizumab in Advanced Ovarian Carcinoma: An NRG Oncology/Gynecologic Oncology Group Study
PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of two different intraperitoneal (IP) chemotherapy regimens on progression-free survival (PFS) among women with newly diagnosed advanced ovarian carcinoma. METHODS: Eligible patients were randomly assigned to six cycles of IV paclitaxel 80 mg/m(2) once per week with intravenous (IV) carboplatin area under the curve 6 (IV carboplatin) versus IV paclitaxel 80 mg/m(2) once per week with IP carboplatin area under the curve 6 (IP carboplatin) versus once every 3 weeks IV paclitaxel 135 mg/m(2) over 3 hours day 1, IP cisplatin 75 mg/m(2) day 2, and IP paclitaxel 60 mg/m(2) day 8 (IP cisplatin). All participants received bevacizumab 15 mg/kg IV every 3 weeks in cycles 2 to 22. RESULTS: A total of 1,560 participants were enrolled and had 84.8 months of follow-up. The median PFS duration was 24.9 months in the IV carboplatin arm, 27.4 months in the IP carboplatin arm, and 26.2 months in the IP cisplatin arm. For the subgroup of 1,380 patients with stage II/III and residual disease of 1 cm or less, median PFS was 26.9 (IV-carboplatin), 28.7 (IP-carboplatin), and 27.8 months (IP cisplatin), respectively. Median PFS for patients with stage II/III and no residual disease was 35.9, 38.8, and 35.5 months, respectively. Median overall survival for all enrolled was 75.5, 78.9, and 72.9 months, respectively, and median overall survival for stage II/III with no gross residual disease was 98.8 months, 104.8 months, and not reached. Mean patient-reported Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy neurotoxicity scores (Gynecologic Oncology Group) were similar for all arms, but the mean Trial Outcome Index of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Ovary scores during chemotherapy were statistically worse in the IP cisplatin arm. Adipose tissue concentrations of persistent organic pollutants and total cancer risk in an adult cohort from Southern Spain: Preliminary data from year 9 of the follow-up
There is an increasing trend in the incidence of cancer worldwide, and it has been accepted that environmental factors account for an important proportion of the global burden. The present paper reports preliminary findings on the influence of the historical exposure to a group of persistent organic pollutants on total cancer risk, at year 9 in the follow-up of a cohort from Southern Spain.
A cohort of 368 participants (median age 51 years) was recruited in 2003. Their historical exposure was estimated by analyzing residues of persistent organic pollutants in adipose tissue. Estimation of cancer incidence was based on data from a population-based cancer registry. Statistical analyses were performed using multivariable Cox-regression models.
In males, PCB 153 concentrations were positively associated with total cancer risk, with an adjusted hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) of 1.20 (1.01–1.41) for an increment of 100 ng/g lipid.
Our preliminary findings suggest a potential relationship between the historical exposure to persistent organic pollutants and the risk of cancer in men.
