Are you listening ... are we learning? Radio production as a means of teaching & learning [case study]

This case study focuses upon one aspect of undergraduate teaching and learning within a ‘Research & Development’ unit of BA (Hons.) Media Production degree. Eight final-year students undertook the mentoring, teaching and development of a schools radio project. The paper seeks to develop two key themes: firstly, an evaluation of the usefulness of undergraduate learning via the development and man- agement of an external project suitable for broadcast; secondly, an examination and analysis of the application and adaptation of prior learning during the mentoring process. The latter theme draws partic- ularly from the strategies and metacognitive processes employed by the students

Function-based Intersubject Alignment of Human Cortical Anatomy

Making conclusions about the functional neuroanatomical organization of the human brain requires methods for relating the functional anatomy of an individual's brain to population variability. We have developed a method for aligning the functional neuroanatomy of individual brains based on the patterns of neural activity that are elicited by viewing a movie. Instead of basing alignment on functionally defined areas, whose location is defined as the center of mass or the local maximum response, the alignment is based on patterns of response as they are distributed spatially both within and across cortical areas. The method is implemented in the two-dimensional manifold of an inflated, spherical cortical surface. The method, although developed using movie data, generalizes successfully to data obtained with another cognitive activation paradigm—viewing static images of objects and faces—and improves group statistics in that experiment as measured by a standard general linear model (GLM) analysis

Physical Activity and Obesity in Canadian Women

Health Issue: Overweight and obesity have been recognized as major public health concern in Canada and throughout the world. Lack of physical activity, through its impact on energy balance, has been identified as an important modifiable risk factor for obesity. Physical activity and obesity are also important risk factors for a variety of chronic diseases. This chapter provides an overview of the current state of physical activity and overweight/obesity among Canadian women. Key Findings: For all ages combined more women (57%) than men (50%) are physically inactive (energy expenditure <1.5 KKD). Physical activity increases as income adequacy and educational level decrease. Physical inactivity also varies by ethnicity. The prevalence of both overweight (BMI 25.0 – 29.9 kg/m2) and obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) Canadian women has increased 7 % since 1985. Obesity increases with age and is highest among women reporting low and lower middle incomes and lower levels of education. The prevalence of obesity is highest among Aboriginal women and men (28 % and 22 % respectively). Data Gaps and Recommendations: There is currently no surveillance system in Canada t

Linear Source Apportionment using Generalized Least Squares

Motivated by applications to water quality monitoring using fluorescence spectroscopy, we develop the source apportionment model for high dimensional profiles of dissolved organic matter (DOM). We describe simple methods to estimate the parameters of a linear source apportionment model, and show how the estimates are related to those of ordinary and generalized least squares. Using this least squares framework, we analyze the variability of the estimates, and we propose predictors for missing elements of a DOM profile. We demonstrate the practical utility of our results on fluorescence spectroscopy data collected from the Neuse River in North Carolina.Comment: 31 pages, 5 figure
