There is a lot written about being hearing impaired. There are guidelines on how to adjust the indoor environment for the hearing impaired. There is even more written about gardening and garden design from different aspects. However, I found out that there is nothing written about garden design or adjusting the outdoor environment for the hearing impaired. At the background of myself being hearing impaired and garden designer I realised that I actually had adjusted my own garden out of the fact that I am hearing impaired. I wanted to take this one step further. The result is a plan for a garden at a school for hearing-impaired children, the Silvia school in HÀssleholm, Sweden. The design and shapes take into consideration that the ones who shall use the garden are hearing-impaired. The garden shall be a peaceful and harmonically place for relaxation and is designed out of the children's needs. Every plant is there for a reason. Every line drawn has a history of thoughts.

Polymorphisms of GSTT1, GSTM1, and EPHX genotypes in patients with cryptogenic polyneuropathy: a case–control study

The aim of this study was to analyze whether polymorphisms for the null alleles of Glutathione S-Transferase Mu-1 (GSTM1), Glutathione S-Transferase Theta-1 (GSTT1), and a low-activity genetic variation of epoxide hydrolase exon three (EPHX*3) affect the risk of developing polyneuropathy. The enzymes of these genes are important in the metabolism of toxic compounds. Seventy-nine patients with cryptogenic polyneuropathy (equivalent to chronic idiopathic axonal neuropathy) and 398 controls were tested for the genetic polymorphism. Medical records were reviewed to collect data regarding clinical findings at diagnosis, and exposure data was collected via questionnaires. The odds ratios (ORs) for the null forms of GSTM1 and GSTT1 and the normal activity YY form of EPHX*3 were close to one except GSTT1, which reached 1.86. The highest risk of polyneuropathy was found in smokers with GSTT1 null, who had a 3.7 times increased risk. Interactions between genes were analyzed and confirmed the increased OR for GSTT1, which was strongest if the patients had the low-activity HH form of EPHX*3 (OR 2.37). Our hypothesis is that the GSTT1 null polymorphism may be related to an impaired metabolism of toxic substances that could lead to nerve damage in the peripheral nervous system

Mortality from lung cancer in workers exposed to sulfur dioxide in the pulp and paper industry.

Our objective in this study was to evaluate the mortality of workers exposed to sulfur dioxide in the pulp and paper industry. The cohort included 57,613 workers employed for at least 1 year in the pulp and paper industry in 12 countries. We assessed exposure to SO(2) at the level of mill and department, using industrial hygiene measurement data and information from company questionnaires; 40,704 workers were classified as exposed to SO(2). We conducted a standardized mortality ratio (SMR) analysis based on age-specific and calendar period-specific national mortality rates. We also conducted a Poisson regression analysis to determine the dose-response relations between SO(2) exposure and cancer mortality risks and to explore the effect of potential confounding factors. The SMR analysis showed a moderate deficit of all causes of death [SMR = 0.89; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.87-0.96] among exposed workers. Lung cancer mortality was marginally increased among exposed workers (SMR = 1.08; 95% CI, 0.98-1.18). After adjustment for occupational coexposures, the lung cancer risk was increased compared with unexposed workers (rate ratio = 1.49; 95% CI, 1.14-1.96). There was a suggestion of a positive relationship between weighted cumulative SO(2) exposure and lung cancer mortality (p-value of test for linear trend = 0.009 among all exposed workers; p = 0.3 among workers with high exposure). Neither duration of exposure nor time since first exposure was associated with lung cancer mortality. Mortality from non-Hodgkin lymphoma and from leukemia was increased among workers with high SO(2) exposure; a dose-response relationship with cumulative SO(2) exposure was suggested for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. For the other causes of death, there was no evidence of increased mortality associated with exposure to SO(2). Although residual confounding may have occurred, our results suggest that occupational exposure to SO(2) in the pulp and paper industry may be associated with an increased risk of lung cancer

Young people's understanding of European values: enhancing abilities, supporting participation and voice

This report is prepared as part of the Jean Monnet Network on Citizenship Education in the Context of European Values. It investigates: the knowledge of young people in European countries about civil society, its principles, citizenship, European values and the European Union; and the citizenship experiences and young people’s attitudes to European values and institutions, their willingness to participate in societal life and spread democratic ideas, Europeanism and global responsibility. Understanding values has always been important. In a time when we are exposed to so many different explanations and commentaries, when social media allow and almost require instantaneous responses, that seem to have to be short, pithy, emphatic. Opinions appear as sharper, less nuanced, insistent. Conspiracy theories can become magnified, imperative and divisive. Young people in particular need to develop the resilience to resist the subversion of values, and have, in some senses, fewer resources and experiences to do so. Yet many of them can do this, and can display depths of understanding and tolerances of diversity. Presentation of the analysis: A: The demographic characteristics of the survey population. This gives a short description of the data set: the countries surveyed, the distribution of ages and gender, the population of the locations, and parental occupations B: A pattern of rights. This section provides an overview of how young people referred to values across Europe as a whole. The intensity of discussions is analysed, and the number of overall individual references are given, contrasting these with the number of individual young people who made multiple references to the same value. C The European values in depth. The first level of detailed analysis is of the value. Each is introduced in turn, and for each there is ‱ an overview of the value in the current European context: its source in the Convention and the Charter, and its development and contemporary meaning; ‱ an analysis of how young people discussed the value – ‱ differences in different Regions of Europe, and ‱ differences in the characteristic descriptions, by timing, location, and type of othering (described in statistics and by illustrative quotations of remarks by young people) ‱ a discussion of the implications of this for pedagogic practice about furthering the understanding of the specific value. D An analysis of regional and other factors. E Teaching issues. We draw together the implications of the analysis for educating young people about understanding these values F Conclusions and recommendations. We conclude by summarising our principal conclusions, and making recommendations at teacher/lecturer, school/college, state and European level
