Metastatic renal cell carcinoma initially presenting with hematochezia and subsequently with vaginal bleeding: a case report

    No full text
Abstract Background We report an unusual case of a synchronous rectal and metachronous vaginal metastatic renal cell carcinoma. Case presentation A 78-year-old woman presented with hematochezia and a colonoscopy revealed a metastatic clear-cell renal cell carcinoma rectal polyp biopsy-proven. Abdominal computed tomography identified a 9.0-cm left renal mass with renal vein thrombosis, for which she underwent a laparoscopic radical nephrectomy. Histopathological examination confirmed a pT3a clear-cell renal cell carcinoma. Seven months later, the patient presented with vaginal bleeding. Physical examination revealed a vaginal polypoid mass and biopsy confirmed a clear-cell renal cell carcinoma metastasis. Conclusions This case represents unusual manifestations of metastatic renal cell carcinoma and is a reminder of the wide spectrum of clinical course of this disease

A carcinoma showing thymus-like elements of the thyroid arising in close association with solid cell nests: evidence for a precursor lesion?

Carcinoma showing thymus-like elements (CASTLE) is a rare malignant neoplasm of the thyroid gland, morphologically and immunohistologically similar to a thymic carcinoma, whose histogenesis is still debated. Hypotheses include an origin from ectopic thymic tissue, vestige of the thymopharyngeal duct, or branchial pouch remnants from which solid cell nests (SC-nests) originate. The diagnosis of CASTLE may be treacherous due to its rarity and its propensity to mimic other poorly differentiated tumors such as squamous cell carcinoma

Mucocele of the appendix and pseudomyxoma peritonei

    No full text
International audienceA mucocele of the appendix corresponds to mucinous distension of the appendix. Rupture, the most severe complication, leads to pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) which frequently is associated with a poor prognosis. The main role of medical imaging is to provide presurgical diagnosis so that all precautions may be taken to avoid per operative rupture and peritoneal seeding. Early diagnosis of pseudomyxoma is also important to allow early radical surgery in patients with peritoneal involvement to reduce recurrences. Radiologists must be familiar with the imaging features of this entity since imaging frequently is the fist step in the diagnosis and management of this pathology and may contribute in avoiding errors with devastating impact on prognosis. In this pictorial essay, the imaging features of 12 cases of mucocele of the appendix and 8 cases of PMP will be reviewed
