    Involvement of Abscisic Acid and Jasmonic Acid Biosynthesis‑related Genes in Cucurbita pepo L. Tolerance to Trace Metal Stress

    Trace metal induced stress is an abiotic factor that limits crop yield, having the additional hazard of their accumulation along trophic chain. This fact supposes an emerging problem concerning the health of the population in the case of edible plants such as Cucurbita pepo (zucchini). Most of the plant physiological responses to this adverse situation are regulated by phytohormones, being abscisic acid (ABA) and jasmonic acid (JA) the most important ones, which biosynthesis comprises a key step in this hormone-mediated signaling. In this work, genes involved in ABA and JA biosynthesis have been searched in the zucchini genome, and their expression has been analyzed in leaves of adult plants subjected to Cd- or Ni-induced stress. The results showed the higher sensitivity of zucchini plants to Ni in comparison to Cd, with a higher phenotypic affection and a major decrease of total dry weight. The study of the expression of 12 target genes (5 related to JA biosynthesis and 7 related to ABA biosynthesis), allowed determining a similar genetic response in C. pepo to these metals. The results extend our knowledge of the role of phytohormones on trace metal stress tolerance. Among all the studied genes, the main ones involved in plant responses to trace metal stress were the ABA-related CpAAO3, CpZEP, and CpNCED4, as well as the JA-related CpLOX2, CpOPR3, CpAOS2, and CpJAR1.     Tailoring activated carbons for the development of specific adsorbents of gasoline vapors

    The specific adsorption of oxygenated and aliphatic gasoline components onto activated carbons (ACs) was studied under static and dynamic conditions. Ethanol and n-octane were selected as target molecules. A highly porous activated carbon (CA) was prepared by means of two processes: carbonization and chemical activation of olive stone residues. Different types of oxygenated groups, identified and quantified by TPD and XPS, were generated on the CA surface using an oxidation treatment with ammonium peroxydisulfate and then selectively removed by thermal treatments, as confirmed by TPD results. Chemical and porous transformations were carefully analyzed throughout these processes and related to their VOC removal performance. The analysis of the adsorption process under static conditions and the thermal desorption of VOCs enabled us to determine the total adsorption capacity and regeneration possibilities. Breakthrough curves obtained for the adsorption process carried out under dynamic conditions provided information about the mass transfer zone in each adsorption bed. While n-octane adsorption is mainly determined by the porosity of activated carbons, ethanol adsorption is related to their surface chemistry, and in particular is enhanced by the presence of carboxylic acid groups.This work is supported by the MICINN-FEDER, project CTM2010-18889

    CentrosomeDB: a human centrosomal proteins database

    Active research on the biology of the centrosome during the past decades has allowed the identification and characterization of many centrosomal proteins. Unfortunately, the accumulated data is still dispersed among heterogeneous sources of information. Here we present centrosome:db, which intends to compile and integrate relevant information related to the human centrosome. We have compiled a set of 383 likely human centrosomal genes and recorded the associated supporting evidences. Centrosome:db offers several perspectives to study the human centrosome including evolution, function and structure. The database contains information on the orthology relationships with other species, including fungi, nematodes, arthropods, urochordates and vertebrates. Predictions of the domain organization of centrosome:db proteins are graphically represented at different sections of the database, including sets of alternative protein isoforms, interacting proteins, groups of orthologs and the homologs identified with blast. Centrosome:db also contains information related to function, gene–disease associations, SNPs and the 3D structure of proteins. Apart from important differences in the coverage of the set of centrosomal genes, our database differentiates from other similar initiatives in the way information is treated and analyzed.     Is higher physical fitness associated with better psychological health in young pediatric cancer survivors? A cross-sectional study from the iBoneFIT project

    Objective To examine the associations of self-perceived and objectively-measured physical fitness with psychological well-being and distress indicators in young pediatric cancer survivors. Materials and Methods A total of 116 participants (12.1 ± 3.3 years, 56.9% boys) from the iBoneFIT project participated in this cross-sectional study. Objectively-measured physical fitness (muscular fitness) was obtained by handgrip strength and standing long jump tests for the upper and lower body, respectively. Self-perceived physical fitness was obtained by the International Fitness Scale (IFIS). Positive and negative affect were assessed by the positive affect schedule for children (PANAS-C), happiness by Subjective Happiness Scale (SHS), optimism by Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R), self-esteem by the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE), anxiety by State–Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC-R), and depression by Children Depression Inventory (CDI). Multiple linear regressions adjusted by key covariates were performed to analyze associations. Results No associations were found between objectively-measured muscular fitness and any of the psychological well-being and distress indicators (p > 0.05). Self-perceived overall fitness and flexibility were positively associated with positive affect (β ≥ 0.258, p < 0.05). Self-perceived cardiorespiratory fitness, speed/agility, and flexibility were negatively associated with depression (β ≥ −0.222, p < 0.05). Finally, self-perceived cardiorespiratory fitness was also negatively associated with anxiety and negative affect (β ≥ −0.264, p < 0.05). Conclusions Perceived physical fitness, but not objectively physical fitness, seems to be inversely related to psychological distress variables and to less extent positively related to psychological well-being. The findings from this study highlight the importance of promoting self-perceived fitness in the pediatric oncology population

    Optimization of Dry Laser-Induced Graphene (LIG) Electrodes for Electrocardiography (ECG) Signals Monitoring

    This work presents the optimization of the fabrication procedure for laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrodes intended for biopotentials acquisition. The results presented in this study demonstrate a significant improvement with respect to the performance obtained for other LIG-based electrodes previously reported in the literature. In particular, we propose the use of a galvanometric laser instead of a CNC laser to improve the engraving resolution and the LIG synthesis process, thus enhancing the surface area of the interface skin-electrode. For that, we have studied the resistance of the resulting LIG patterns as a function of the laser parameters (engraving power and scan speed) seeking their optimization. After tunning the laser fabrication process, we have fabricated and characterized electrocardiogram (ECG) electrodes with different surface areas using a commercial silver-based electrode as a reference. Thus, circular electrodes with a diameter of 15 mm, 10 mm and 6.5 mm were used to acquire the ECG on different volunteers using a commercial equipment. The signals acquired were processed afterwards with cutting edge processing techniques to perform a statistical analysis in terms of sensitivity, specificity, positive prediction and accuracy for the detection of QRS complexes.     Evaluation of turbulent dissipation rate retrievals from Doppler Cloud Radar

    Turbulent dissipation rate retrievals from cloud radar Doppler velocity measurements are evaluated using independent, in situ observations in Arctic stratocumulus clouds. In situ validation data sets of dissipation rate are derived using sonic anemometer measurements from a tethered balloon and high frequency pressure variation observations from a research aircraft, both flown in proximity to stationary, ground-based radars. Modest biases are found among the data sets in particularly low- or high-turbulence regimes, but in general the radar-retrieved values correspond well with the in situ measurements. Root mean square differences are typically a factor of 4-6 relative to any given magnitude of dissipation rate. These differences are no larger than those found when comparing dissipation rates computed from tetheredballoon and meteorological tower-mounted sonic anemometer measurements made at spatial distances of a few hundred meters. Temporal lag analyses suggest that approximately half of the observed differences are due to spatial sampling considerations, such that the anticipated radar-based retrieval uncertainty is on the order of a factor of 2-3. Moreover, radar retrievals are clearly able to capture the vertical dissipation rate structure observed by the in situ sensors, while offering substantially more information on the time variability of turbulence profiles. Together these evaluations indicate that radar-based retrievals can, at a minimum, be used to determine the vertical structure of turbulence in Arctic stratocumulus clouds

    Measurement of inclusive charged current interactions on carbon in a few-GeV neutrino beam

    The SciBooNE Collaboration reports a measurement of inclusive charged current interactions of muon neutrinos on carbon with an average energy of 0.8 GeV using the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam. We compare our measurement with two neutrino interaction simulations: NEUT and NUANCE. The charged current interaction rates (product of flux and cross section) are extracted by fitting the muon kinematics, with a precision of 6-15% for the energy dependent and 3% for the energy integrated analyses. We also extract CC inclusive interaction cross sections from the observed rates, with a precision of 10-30% for the energy dependent and 8% for the energy integrated analyses. This is the first measurement of the CC inclusive cross section on carbon around 1 GeV. These results can be used to convert previous SciBooNE cross section ratio measurements to absolute cross section values.Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures. Accepted by Phys. Rev. D.
