“O Palácio Real do Alfeite. Abstract: This thesis subject is the Royal Palace of Alfeite, one of the many Portuguese buildings whose history is basically unknown in civil society. This historic building owned by the Portuguese Navy since 1918, has been from the beginning a vital piece in the infrastructure network of this military institution. The study of this Palace that houses the Lisbon Naval Base Command, whose fiftieth anniversary was proudly celebrated in 2008, is part of the celebrations sponsored by the Portuguese Navy and seeks to interweave the military aspect with culture and education. Although this dissertation covers the history of the Royal Palace of Alfeite, including the Royal Farm of Alfeite and the other Farms that sprung in the vicinity, it is mainly concerned with the study of several aspects seldom discussed until now. We seek to understand and make known the building artistic and architectural characteristics through the study of the work campaigns that changed both its exterior and interior, adapting it to the requirements of the owners. Since our intention is to position this dissertation within the broader scope of a future heritage safeguard and dissemination project of the built heritage owned by the Portuguese Navy, we want to bring to light a forgotten building that is also in its own way a work of art. In order to achieve that, we sought to study and disclose specific aspects of the Royal Palace of Alfeite. We have highlighted the most relevant historic moments of the Royal Palace of Alfeite including its integration in 1690 into the Casa do Infantado, its latter transference into the Royal House in 1834, its passage through the difficult period of the Republic until its ultimate transfer into the Navy in 1918. Therefore important points in this dissertation are the two main building works campaigns the first in the XVII century and the second in the XIX century that completely transformed the existing manor house before its integration in the Casa do Infantado and that created a setting of leisure for the use of the Prince Royal and the Royal Family. present only a preliminary study since the considerable amount of information that we were able to collect certainly deserves its own independent and thorough study. We want to emphasize one last feature of this dissertation: we have allocated a chapter to the extinct Chapel of the Royal Palace of Alfeite as we feel we have the unique opportunity to achieve its “rebirth” by making use of Professor’s Vítor Serrão theory of Crypto-History

Dove in the skin cleansing category case study : do private labels represent a threat?

During the past years, the Portuguese retail mass market had been witnessing some changes in the consumers shopping habits. There are several reasons that might explain this fact. One of the main reasons for this phenomenon is the financial crisis, forcing consumers to change some of their habits. Over the years the retail mass market has been changing and adapting to new trends. In general, brands are enlarging their product portfolios in order to face competition and to try to reach every consumer segment – decreasing the product differentiation. Brands are now challenged to stand out in categories where sometimes products’ benefits are very alike. Given the decrease in product differentiation and the Portuguese consumer adaptation to the economic environment, the number of private labels purchased has been increasing. As a consequence, the variation in the perceived quality between NBs and PLBs is decreasing, resulting into the use of price as the deciding factor. Despite the veracity of price being the ultimate deciding factor in some categories (such as food), in the skin cleansing category the same cannot be concluded. As a market leader in the category, Dove represents an example of success in an industry where wining a price war is crucial. This research tries to unveil some of reasons behind this success. Much of the success is due to the nature of each category. This nature will vary according to variables such as risk of purchase, price consciousness and others which will lead to a higher propensity towards national brands.

Integrated marketing communications : suitability in B2B markets : the case of the brand DaTerra

As it is often said: “If you don’t see it, it doesn’t exist”. In this sense, the relevant choice of promotion tools has gained importance as a differentiating instrument for companies, in order to become popular and acquire a solid degree of reputation and status. Being the choice of more relational communication tools quite common among business markets, it is starting to be questioned if the use of those tools is sufficient alone or, if it is reasonable for business actors to reach out to other communication instruments typically used in consumer markets. This dissertation focuses, firstly, on the specificities of business markets, the communication molds within this field and the changing views regarding this matter, based on studies of other authors. Secondly, there will be an analysis to the promotion practices of a business-to-business brand that operates within the homeware industry, in light of good practices studied. Thirdly, it is discussed the appropriateness of communication channels outside businesses comfort zone – namely public relations and interactive marketing – highlighting the relevance of an integrated marketing communications’ approach. Finally, some suggestions regarding the brand’s current promotion strategy are proposed, which overall manifest themselves in potential gains in terms of brand awareness. The results show that there is a tendency to focus on somewhat more relational communication tools and, thus, facing the nature of the business, it is recommended to the company under study the continuous usage of those instruments. Nevertheless, there is also evidence of room for improvement, namely, the parallel (integrated) use of promotion tools characteristic of consumer markets

    Radial Alignment in Simulated Clusters

Observational evidence for the radial alignment of satellites with their dark matter host has been accumulating steadily in the past few years. The effect is seen over a wide range of scales, from massive clusters of galaxies down to galaxy-sized systems, yet the underlying physical mechanism has still not been established. To this end, we have carried out a detailed analysis of the shapes and orientations of dark matter substructures in high-resolution N-body cosmological simulations. We find a strong tendency for radial alignment of the substructure with its host halo: the distribution of halo major axes is very anisotropic, with the majority pointing towards the center of mass of the host. The alignment peaks once the sub-halo has passed the virial radius of the host for the first time, but is not subsequently diluted, even after the halos have gone through as many as four pericentric passages. This evidence points to the existence of a very rapid dynamical mechanism acting on these systems and we argue that tidal torquing throughout their orbits is the most likely candidate.Comment: v2: 13 pages, 10 figures, ApJ in press. Coordination between proteasome impairment and caspase activation leading to TAU pathology: neuroprotection by cAMP

Neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) are hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The main component of NFTs is TAU, a highly soluble microtubule-associated protein. However, when TAU is cleaved at Asp421 by caspases it becomes prone to aggregation leading to NFTs. What triggers caspase activation resulting in TAU cleavage remains unclear. We investigated in rat cortical neurons a potential coordination between proteasome impairment and caspase activation. We demonstrate that upon proteasome inhibition, the early accumulation of detergent-soluble ubiquitinated (SUb) proteins paves the way to caspase activation and TAU pathology. This occurs with two drugs that inhibit the proteasome by different means: the product of inflammation prostaglandin J2 (PGJ2) and epoxomicin. Our results pinpoint a critical early event, that is, the buildup of SUb proteins that contributes to caspase activation, TAU cleavage, TAU/Ub-protein aggregation and neuronal death. Furthermore, to our knowledge, we are the first to demonstrate that elevating cAMP in neurons with dibutyryl-cAMP (db-cAMP) or the lipophilic peptide PACAP27 prevents/ diminishes caspase activation, TAU cleavage and neuronal death induced by PGJ2, as long as these PGJ2-induced changes are moderate. db-cAMP also stimulated proteasomes, and mitigated proteasome inhibition induced by PGJ2. We propose that targeting cAMP/PKA to boost proteasome activity in a sustainable manner could offer an effective approach to avoid early accumulation of SUb proteins and later caspase activation, and TAU cleavage, possibly preventing/delaying AD neurodegeneration

Analysing data from pension schemes : data quality and relevance for actuarial valuations

Data is the object of an actuarial analysis. Reviewing the data is the first step of a valuation, along with setting up assumptions and having the knowledge about the actuarial theory - these components together will enable the actuary to perform the necessary calculations and interpret its results. Having this in mind, data quality is something worthy to give a thought about and that's what this work will be for. After an internship at Willis Towers Watson Lisbon office, I realised data was a subject of high importance and the one I dealt with on a daily basis. Here, I will give some background knowledge about pension schemes, mainly United Kingdom pension schemes as they were my main focus. A case study about data issues and their impact on a valuation will be presented to give the reader real numbers and the real impact some minor data issues can have. For this study, a training client was used and the problems described were based on my work-experience - all inaccuracies present in Chapter 5 were found (and corrected) in real clients during my internship.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The Mass-Concentration Relation and the Stellar-to-Halo Mass Ratio in the CFHT Stripe 82 Survey

We present a new measurement of the mass-concentration relation and the stellar-to-halo mass ratio over the halo mass range 5×10125\times 10^{12} to 2×1014M2\times 10^{14}M_{\odot}. To achieve this, we use weak lensing measurements from the CFHT Stripe 82 Survey (CS82), combined with the central galaxies from the redMaPPer cluster catalogue and the LOWZ/CMASS galaxy sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Tenth Data Release. The stacked lensing signals around these samples are modelled as a sum of contributions from the central galaxy, its dark matter halo, and the neighboring halos, as well as a term for possible centering errors. We measure the mass-concentration relation: c200c(M)=A(M200cM0)Bc_{200c}(M)=A(\frac{M_{200c}}{M_0})^{B} with A=5.24±1.24,B=0.13±0.10A=5.24\pm1.24, B=-0.13\pm0.10 for 0.2<z<0.40.2<z<0.4 and A=6.61±0.75,B=0.15±0.05A=6.61\pm0.75, B=-0.15\pm0.05 for 0.4<z<0.60.4<z<0.6. These amplitudes and slopes are completely consistent with predictions from recent simulations. We also measure the stellar-to-halo mass ratio for our samples, and find results consistent with previous measurements from lensing and other techniques.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 3 table

Ethnobotany and Indigenous Traditional Knowledge in Brazil: Contributions to Research in Ecopsychology

    Get PDF
This paper is the result of an investigation of the flora and traditional knowledge in the conception of Javaé indigenous people from the Txuiri village located on Bananal Island, Brazil. The objective is to investigate the plants used by these indigenous people, their diverse uses and to understand how traditional knowledge is passed on to new generations. This is a qualitative, descriptive and interdisciplinary survey, whose data collection strategies included the application of semi-structured questionnaires and collection of plants for cataloguing according to Angiosperm Phylogeny Group or APG III (2009). We identified 26 plant species, used for various purposes such as medicinal use, food, construction, craft and cultural, which were deposited in the Herbarium of the Federal University of Tocantins. Roots, stem and leaf are the plant parts most used by the community. The plants mentioned were most frequently found on the banks of the Javaés River and in the backyard of the residences. Significant traditional knowledge of these people about the plants are transmitted to new generations, through visual, orality and experimentation. Ethnobotanical studies strengthen research in ecopsychology while allowing research into the interactions between human populations and plants
