Kinematic space for conical defects
Kinematic space can be used as an intermediate step in the AdS/CFT dictionary
and lends itself naturally to the description of diffeomorphism invariant
quantities. From the bulk it has been defined as the space of boundary anchored
geodesics, and from the boundary as the space of pairs of CFT points. When the
bulk is not globally AdS the appearance of non-minimal geodesics leads to
ambiguities in these definitions. In this work conical defect spacetimes are
considered as an example where non-minimal geodesics are common. From the bulk
it is found that the conical defect kinematic space can be obtained from the
AdS kinematic space by the same quotient under which one obtains the defect
from AdS. The resulting kinematic space is one of many equivalent
fundamental regions. From the boundary the conical defect kinematic space can
be determined by breaking up OPE blocks into contributions from individual bulk
geodesics. A duality is established between partial OPE blocks and bulk fields
integrated over individual geodesics, minimal or non-minimal.Comment: 29 pages, 9 figures. As published in JHE
Potential markets for a satellite-based mobile communications system
The objective of the study was to define the market needs for improved land mobile communications systems. Within the context of this objective, the following goals were set: (1) characterize the present mobile communications industry; (2) determine the market for an improved system for mobile communications; and (3) define the system requirements as seen from the potential customer's viewpoint. The scope of the study was defined by the following parameters: (1) markets were confined to U.S. and Canada; (2) range of operation generally exceeded 20 miles, but this was not restrictive; (3) the classes of potential users considered included all private sector users, and non-military public sector users; (4) the time span examined was 1975 to 1985; and (5) highly localized users were generally excluded - e.g., taxicabs, and local paging
Generalized Hot Enhancons
We review what has been learnt and what remains unknown about the physics of
hot enhancons following studies in supergravity. We recall a rather general
family of static, spherically symmetric, non-extremal enhancon solutions
describing D4 branes wrapped on K3 and discuss physical aspects of the
solutions. We embed these solutions in the six dimensional supergravity
describing Type IIA strings on K3 and generalize them to have arbitrary charge
vector. This allows us to demonstrate the equivalence with a known family of
hot fractional D0 brane solutions, to widen the class of solutions of this
second type and to carry much of the discussion across from the D4 brane
analysis. In particular we argue for the existence of a horizon branch for
these branes.Comment: 25 pages, Late
D--branes and Spinning Black Holes
We obtain a new class of spinning charged extremal black holes in five
dimensions, considered both as classical configurations and in the
Dirichlet(D)--brane representation. The degeneracy of states is computed from
the D--brane side and the entropy agrees perfectly with that obtained from the
black hole side.Comment: 10 pages, harvmac ``b'' mode (minor changes
