    Displaced Mothers, Absent and Unnatural Fathers: LGBT Transracial Adoption

    While some might believe that Black versus gay discourse only surfaces in highly politicized settings like the military and marriage, it holds sway in the area of LGBT transracial adoption. LGBT transracial adoptions are a relatively small percentage of all adoptions, which include private adoptions, LGBT second-parent adoptions, and step-parent adoptions, but they are an important site for interrogating the Black versus gay discourse because adoption and custody decisions often address parent-child transmission. When claims intersect, as they do in a case where a White LGBT foster parent and a Black maternal grandmother dispute the adoption of a Black child, weakened race-based claims and LGBT transmission fears inform the court\u27s decision. Disrupting the media staging of Black versus gay could provide courts better insight into how weakened race claims and LGBT transmission fears pull in opposite directions, and this would create the conditions for better, more innovative family decisions. If courts had a better understanding of the apparent competition between race and orientation, but also understood the costs attached to the media staging of the discourse, decision making in adoption and custody cases could be more comprehensive, taking into account the common interests in the children at issue. Understanding the costs that result from the media staging of Black versus gay discourse is key to finding common ground for identity groups and helping children of color already in LGBT homes. Black versus gay discourse is dangerous because of the structural costs that come with continued reliance on pernicious stereotypes of Black and gay. Looking at media and advocacy sources about LGBT transracial adoption, it appears as though rich, White gay men who adopt dangerous, damaged Black children may be the answer to racism, the superabundance of children in foster care, and poverty and criminality. This narrative looks like the gentrification of Black children by the gay community. This is dangerous because it imagines that Black is not gay and gay is not Black. It also displaces Black women as rightful, loving, and capable mothers and obscures the contributions of LGBTs of color and those with lower incomes, many of whom are mothers and fathers

    Experimental investigation of planar ion traps

    Chiaverini et al. [Quant. Inf. Comput. 5, 419 (2005)] recently suggested a linear Paul trap geometry for ion trap quantum computation that places all of the electrodes in a plane. Such planar ion traps are compatible with modern semiconductor fabrication techniques and can be scaled to make compact, many zone traps. In this paper we present an experimental realization of planar ion traps using electrodes on a printed circuit board to trap linear chains of tens of 0.44 micron diameter charged particles in a vacuum of 15 Pa (0.1 torr). With these traps we address concerns about the low trap depth of planar ion traps and develop control electrode layouts for moving ions between trap zones without facing some of the technical difficulties involved in an atomic ion trap experiment. Specifically, we use a trap with 36 zones (77 electrodes) arranged in a cross to demonstrate loading from a traditional four rod linear Paul trap, linear ion movement, splitting and joining of ion chains, and movement of ions through intersections. We further propose an additional DC biased electrode above the trap which increases the trap depth dramatically, and a novel planar ion trap geometry that generates a two dimensional lattice of point Paul traps.Comment: 11 pages, 20 figure

    ASTRO-F - The next generation of mid-infrared surveys

    We present basic observational strategies for ASTRO-F (also known as the Imaging Infra Red Surveyor (IRIS)) to be launched in 2004 by the Japanese Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS). We examine 2 survey scenarios, a deep ~1sq.deg. survey reaching sensitivities an order of magnitude below than the deepest surveys performed by ISO in the mid-IR, and a shallow \~18sq.deg mid-infrared (7-25um in 6 bands) covering an area greater than the entire area covered by all ISO mid-IR surveys. Using 2 cosmological models the number of galaxies predicted for each survey is calculated. The first model uses an enhancement of the pure luminosity evolution model of Pearson & Rowan-Robinson while the new models incorporate a strongly evolving ULIG component. For the deep survey, between 20,000-30,000 galaxies should be detected in the shortest wavebands and ~5000 in the longest (25um) band.     Spitzer Observations of the North Ecliptic Pole

    We present a photometric catalog for Spitzer Space Telescope warm mission observations of the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP; centered at R.A.=18h00m00s\rm R.A.=18^h00^m00^s, Decl.=66d33m38s.552\rm Decl.=66^d33^m38^s.552). The observations are conducted with IRAC in 3.6 μ\mum and 4.5 μ\mum bands over an area of 7.04 deg2^2 reaching 1σ\sigma depths of 1.29 μ\muJy and 0.79 μ\muJy in the 3.6 μ\mum and 4.5 μ\mum bands respectively. The photometric catalog contains 380,858 sources with 3.6 μ\mum and 4.5 μ\mum band photometry over the full-depth NEP mosaic. Point source completeness simulations show that the catalog is 80% complete down to 19.7 AB. The accompanying catalog can be utilized in constraining the physical properties of extra-galactic objects, studying the AGN population, measuring the infrared colors of stellar objects, and studying the extra-galactic infrared background light.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures and 3 tables.     Multi-wavelength analysis of 18um-selected galaxies in the AKARI/IRC monitor field towards the North Ecliptic Pole

    We present an initial analysis of AKARI 18um-selected galaxies using all 9 photometric bands at 2-24um available in the InfraRed Camera (IRC), in order to demonstrate new capabilities of AKARI cosmological surveys. We detected 72 sources at 18um in an area of 50.2 arcmin^2 in the AKARI/IRC monitor field towards the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP). From this sample, 25 galaxies with probable redshifts z>~ 0.5 are selected with a single colour cut (N2-N3>0.1) for a detailed SED analysis with ground-based BVRi'z'JK data. Using an SED radiative transfer model of starbursts covering the wavelength range UV -- submm, we derive photometric redshifts from the optical-MIR SEDs of 18um-selected galaxies. From the best-fit SED models, we show that the IRC all-band photometry is capable of tracing the steep rise in flux at the blue side of the PAH 6.2um emission feature. This indicates that the IRC all-band photometry is useful to constrain the redshift of infrared galaxies, specifically for dusty galaxies with a less prominent 4000A break. Also, we find that the flux dip between the PAH 7.7 and 11.2um emission feature is recognizable in the observed SEDs of galaxies at z~1. By using such a colour anomaly due to the PAH and silicate absorption features, unique samples of ULIRGs at z~1, `silicate-break' galaxies, can be constructed from large cosmological surveys of AKARI towards the NEP, i.e. the NEP-Deep and NEP-Wide survey. This pilot study suggests the possibility of detecting many interesting galaxy properties in the NEP-Deep and Wide surveys, such as a systematic difference in SEDs between high- and low-z ULIRGs, and a large variation of the PAH inter-band strength ratio in galaxies at high redshifts.     Zinc oxide thin-film transistors fabricated at low temperature by chemical spray pyrolysis

    We report the electrical behavior of undoped zinc oxide thin-film transistors (TFTs) fabricated by low-temperature chemical spray pyrolysis. An aerosol system utilizing aerodynamic focusing was used to deposit the ZnO. Polycrystalline films were subsequently formed by annealing at the relatively low temperature of 140°C. The saturation mobility of the TFTs was 2 cm2/Vs, which is the highest reported for undoped ZnO TFTs manufactured below 150°C. The devices also had an on/off ratio of 104 and a threshold voltage of −3.5 V. These values were found to depend reversibly on measurement conditions
