Do early-life exposures explain why more advantaged children get eczema? Findings from the U.K. Millennium Cohort Study
Background:
Atopic dermatitis (eczema) in childhood is socially patterned, with higher incidence in more advantaged populations. However, it is unclear what factors explain the social differences.
Objectives:
To identify early-life risk factors for eczema, and to explore how early-life risk factors explain any differences in eczema.
Methods:
We estimated odds ratios (ORs) for ever having had eczema by age 5 years in 14 499 children from the U.K. Millennium Cohort Study (MCS), with a focus on maternal, antenatal and early-life risk factors and socioeconomic circumstances (SECs). Risk factors were explored to assess whether they attenuated associations between SECs and eczema.
Results:
Overall 35·1% of children had ever had eczema by age 5 years. Children of mothers with degree-level qualifications vs. no educational qualifications were more likely to have eczema (OR 1·52, 95% confidence interval 1·31–1·76), and there was a gradient across the socioeconomic spectrum. Maternal atopy, breastfeeding (1–6 weeks and ≥ 6 months), introduction of solids under 4 months or cow's milk under 9 months, antibiotic exposure in the first year of life and grime exposure were associated with an increased odds of having eczema. Female sex, Pakistani and Bangladeshi ethnicity, smoking during pregnancy, exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and having more siblings were associated with reduced odds for eczema. Controlling for maternal, antenatal and early-life characteristics (particularly maternal smoking during pregnancy, breastfeeding and number of siblings) reduced the OR for eczema to 1·26 (95% confidence interval 1·03–1·50) in the group with the highest educational qualifications compared with the least.
Conclusions:
In a representative U.K. child cohort, eczema was more common in more advantaged children. This was explained partially by early-life factors including not smoking during pregnancy, breastfeeding and having fewer siblings
UV and EUV Instruments
We describe telescopes and instruments that were developed and used for
astronomical research in the ultraviolet (UV) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV)
regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The wavelength ranges covered by these
bands are not uniquely defined. We use the following convention here: The EUV
and UV span the regions ~100-912 and 912-3000 Angstroem respectively. The
limitation between both ranges is a natural choice, because the hydrogen Lyman
absorption edge is located at 912 Angstroem. At smaller wavelengths,
astronomical sources are strongly absorbed by the interstellar medium. It also
marks a technical limit, because telescopes and instruments are of different
design. In the EUV range, the technology is strongly related to that utilized
in X-ray astronomy, while in the UV range the instruments in many cases have
their roots in optical astronomy. We will, therefore, describe the UV and EUV
instruments in appropriate conciseness and refer to the respective chapters of

Improved constraints on the expansion rate of the Universe up to z~1.1 from the spectroscopic evolution of cosmic chronometers
We present new improved constraints on the Hubble parameter H(z) in the
redshift range 0.15 < z < 1.1, obtained from the differential spectroscopic
evolution of early-type galaxies as a function of redshift. We extract a large
sample of early-type galaxies (\sim11000) from several spectroscopic surveys,
spanning almost 8 billion years of cosmic lookback time (0.15 < z < 1.42). We
select the most massive, red elliptical galaxies, passively evolving and
without signature of ongoing star formation. Those galaxies can be used as
standard cosmic chronometers, as firstly proposed by Jimenez & Loeb (2002),
whose differential age evolution as a function of cosmic time directly probes
H(z). We analyze the 4000 {\AA} break (D4000) as a function of redshift, use
stellar population synthesis models to theoretically calibrate the dependence
of the differential age evolution on the differential D4000, and estimate the
Hubble parameter taking into account both statistical and systematical errors.
We provide 8 new measurements of H(z) (see Tab. 4), and determine its change in
H(z) to a precision of 5-12% mapping homogeneously the redshift range up to z
\sim 1.1; for the first time, we place a constraint on H(z) at z \neq 0 with a
precision comparable with the one achieved for the Hubble constant (about 5-6%
at z \sim 0.2), and covered a redshift range (0.5 < z < 0.8) which is crucial
to distinguish many different quintessence cosmologies. These measurements have
been tested to best match a \Lambda CDM model, clearly providing a
statistically robust indication that the Universe is undergoing an accelerated
expansion. This method shows the potentiality to open a new avenue in constrain
a variety of alternative cosmologies, especially when future surveys (e.g.

Le magmatisme de la région de Kwyjibo, Province\ud du Grenville (Canada) : intérêt pour les\ud minéralisations de type fer-oxydes associées
The granitic plutons located north of the Kwyjibo property in Quebec’s Grenville Province are of\ud
Mesoproterozoic age and belong to the granitic Canatiche Complex . The rocks in these plutons are calc-alkalic, K-rich,\ud
and meta- to peraluminous. They belong to the magnetite series and their trace element characteristics link them to\ud
intraplate granites. They were emplaced in an anorogenic, subvolcanic environment, but they subsequently underwent\ud
significant ductile deformation. The magnetite, copper, and fluorite showings on the Kwyjibo property are polyphased\ud
and premetamorphic; their formation began with the emplacement of hydraulic, magnetite-bearing breccias, followed by\ud
impregnations and veins of chalcopyrite, pyrite, and fluorite, and ended with a late phase of mineralization, during\ud
which uraninite, rare earths, and hematite were emplaced along brittle structures. The plutons belong to two families:\ud
biotite-amphibole granites and leucogranites. The biotite-amphibole granites are rich in iron and represent a potential\ud
heat and metal source for the first, iron oxide phase of mineralization. The leucogranites show a primary enrichment in\ud
REE (rare-earth elements), F, and U, carried mainly in Y-, U-, and REE-bearing niobotitanates. They are metamict and\ud
underwent a postmagmatic alteration that remobilized the uranium and the rare earths. The leucogranites could also be\ud
a source of rare earths and uranium for the latest mineralizing events
Evidence for the strangeness-changing weak decay
Using a collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity
of 3.0~fb, collected by the LHCb detector, we present the first search
for the strangeness-changing weak decay . No
hadron decay of this type has been seen before. A signal for this decay,
corresponding to a significance of 3.2 standard deviations, is reported. The

flavour tagging using charm decays at the LHCb experiment
An algorithm is described for tagging the flavour content at production of
neutral mesons in the LHCb experiment. The algorithm exploits the
correlation of the flavour of a meson with the charge of a reconstructed
secondary charm hadron from the decay of the other hadron produced in the
proton-proton collision. Charm hadron candidates are identified in a number of
fully or partially reconstructed Cabibbo-favoured decay modes. The algorithm is
calibrated on the self-tagged decay modes and using of data collected by the LHCb
experiment at centre-of-mass energies of and
. Its tagging power on these samples of

Measurements of long-range near-side angular correlations in TeV proton-lead collisions in the forward region
Two-particle angular correlations are studied in proton-lead collisions at a
nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of TeV, collected
with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on data recorded in
two beam configurations, in which either the direction of the proton or that of
the lead ion is analysed. The correlations are measured in the laboratory
system as a function of relative pseudorapidity, , and relative
azimuthal angle, , for events in different classes of event
activity and for different bins of particle transverse momentum. In
high-activity events a long-range correlation on the near side, , is observed in the pseudorapidity range . This
measurement of long-range correlations on the near side in proton-lead
collisions extends previous observations into the forward region up to
. The correlation increases with growing event activity and is found
to be more pronounced in the direction of the lead beam. However, the
correlation in the direction of the lead and proton beams are found to be
compatible when comparing events with similar absolute activity in the

Search for the lepton-flavor-violating decays Bs0→e±μ∓ and B0→e±μ∓
A search for the lepton-flavor-violating decays Bs0→e±μ∓ and B0→e±μ∓ is performed with a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb-1 of pp collisions at √s=7 TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment. The observed number of Bs0→e±μ∓ and B0→e±μ∓ candidates is consistent with background expectations. Upper limits on the branching fractions of both decays are determined to be B(Bs0→e±μ∓)101 TeV/c2 and MLQ(B0→e±μ∓)>126 TeV/c2 at 95% C.L., and are a factor of 2 higher than the previous bounds
Study of the production of and hadrons in collisions and first measurement of the branching fraction
The product of the () differential production
cross-section and the branching fraction of the decay () is
measured as a function of the beauty hadron transverse momentum, ,
and rapidity, . The kinematic region of the measurements is and . The measurements use a data sample
corresponding to an integrated luminosity of collected by the
LHCb detector in collisions at centre-of-mass energies in 2011 and in 2012. Based on previous LHCb
results of the fragmentation fraction ratio, , the

Being (im)polite: A forensic linguistic approach to interpreting a hate speech case
In a hate speech case a court might have to determine whether a person’s words
were hurtful or harmful. Would it be possible to determine whether words are hurtful
or harmful by using linguistics? This article offers a linguistic perspective on a court’s
interpretation of the Equality Act in a hate speech case and focuses on speech acts
and politeness. If the speech acts of a verbal exchange are studied and the levels of
politeness are gauged, a court would be able to affi rm the hurtfulness or harmfulness
of the speaker’s words. The article begins with a brief discussion on the potential role
of the linguist in a courtroom; this is followed by a summary of the facts of the case.
Then the court case is analysed and discussed in terms of speech acts and politeness.
By employing principles in pragmatics the author reaches the same conclusion
