    Simple fractal method of assessment of histological images for application in medical diagnostics

    We propose new method of assessment of histological images for medical diagnostics. 2-D image is preprocessed to form 1-D landscapes or 1-D signature of the image contour and then their complexity is analyzed using Higuchi's fractal dimension method. The method may have broad medical application, from choosing implant materials to differentiation between benign masses and malignant breast tumors

    Analysis of communication in the educational process by means of e-learning

    Purpose: The aim of the research is to analyse communication in the educational process by means of e-learning. Approach/Methodology/Design: An analysis of relevant foreign literature was conducted. A communication model and a comparative analysis of synchronous communication tools based on established criteria were indicated. For the comparative analysis normal distribution, descriptive analysis methodology and chi-quadrate distribution with T-student distribution were used. Findings: The analysis of the presented research results shows that most respondents prefer to solve tasks at a distance in any form. Students are satisfied with the adopted solutions, as well as with the offered methods of communication. The introduction of e-learning positively influences the acquisition and dysfunction of knowledge by students. Practical Implications: Distance communication is a very popular means of communication in the 21st century. The use of various tools does not create a barrier and is evidence of high technological progress. Originality/Value: An original literary approach from the most recent international positions was presented and authorial research was carried out on a representative group of respondents. It is shown that the transfer and acquisition of knowledge by means of information and communication technologies has contributed to changes at universities.peer-reviewe

    Thermal analysis of 8.5 MVA disk-type power transformer cooled by biodegradable ester oil working in ONAN mode by using advanced EMAG–CFD–CFD coupling

    Power transformers are the first devices used to transfer the electrical energy produced in power plants to the grid to supply the industrial and individual receivers with electricity. The heat generation in windings and core, being an effect of the power losses, is usually dissipated in large units by using mineral oils, which are harmful to the environment. Nowadays, the industry and global society seek environmentally-friendly alternatives. One of the most promising substitute for their high biodegradability, safety in operation, and favourable thermo-physical properties are natural ester oils. For this reason, a numerical study of 8.5 MVA disk-type power transformer cooled using conventional mineral oil and a commercially used rapeseed ester oil is presented in this paper. Moreover, due to different thermal behaviour of the considered oils, the comparison was made for the unit working in different seasons of hot and moderate climate zones (Argentina and Poland). In the numerical approach, electromagnetic (EMAG) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models were used for a detailed study of the selected device. In particular, a novel and very efficient EMAG–CFD–CFD coupling procedure was developed to assess the cooling of the large power transformer. Such a coupled computational procedure allowed for the detailed investigation of the power loss, oil flow characteristics, and temperatures with a satisfying computational effort. The results showed that the average windings temperatures are higher by 2–9 K when the ester oil is used, dependent on the ambient conditions. The hotspot temperature in the low voltage windings increased by up to 9 K and up to 18 K in the high voltage windings using ester oil. According to the results, the oil duct construction requires modification in the high voltage region for transformers cooled using mineral oil in cold climate conditions.Fil: Stebel, Michal.     Prediction of the structure of the common perimitochondrial localization signal of nuclear transcripts in yeast

    Many nuclear genes encoding mitochondrial proteins require specific localization of their mRNAs to the vicinity of mitochondria for proper expression. Studies in Saccharomyces cerevisiae have shown that the cis-acting signal responsible for subcellular localization of mRNAs is localized in the 3' UTR of the transcript. In this paper we present an in silico approach for prediction of a common perimitochondrial localization signal of nuclear transcripts encoding mitochondrial proteins. We computed a consensus structure for this signal by comparison of 3' UTR models for about 3000 yeast transcripts with known localization. Our studies show a short stem-loop structure which appears in most mRNAs localized to the vicinity of mitochondria. The degree of similarity of a given 3' UTR to our consensus structure strongly correlates with experimentally determined perimitochondrial localization of the mRNA, therefore we believe that the structure we predicted acts as a subcellular localization signal. Since our algorithm operates on structures, it seems to be more reliable than sequence-based algorithms. The good predictive value of our model is supported by statistical analysis
