Magnetisation process in Er2Ti2O7 and Tb2Ti2O7 at very low temperature
We present a model which accounts for the high field magnetisation at very
low temperature in two pyrochlore frustrated systems, Er2Ti2O7 and Tb2Ti2O7.
The two compounds present very different ground states: Er2Ti2O7, which has a
planar crystal field anisotropy, is an antiferromagnet with T_N=1.2K, whereas
Tb2Ti2O7 is expected to have Ising character and shows no magnetic ordering
down to 0.05K, being thus labelled a ``spin liquid''. Our model is a mean field
self-consistent calculation involving the 4 rare earth sites of a tetrahedron,
the building unit of the pyrochlore lattice. It includes the full crystal field
hamiltonian, the infinite range dipolar interaction and anisotropic nearest
neighbour exchange described by a 3-component tensor. For Er2Ti2O7, we discuss
the equivalence of our treatment of the exchange tensor, taken to be diagonal
in a frame linked to a rare earth - rare earth bond, with the pseudo-spin
hamiltonian recently developped for Kramers doublets in a pyrochlore lattice.
In Tb2Ti2O7, an essential ingredient of our model is a symmetry breaking
developping at very low temperature. We compare its prediction for the
isothermal magnetisation with that of ``the quantum spin ice'' model
Multiband Superconductivity in KFe2As2: Evidence for one Isotropic and several Liliputian Energy Gaps
We report a detailed low-temperature thermodynamic investigation (heat
capacity and magnetization) of the superconducting state of KFe2As2 for H || c
axis. Our measurements reveal that the properties of KFe2As2 are dominated by a
relatively large nodeless energy gap (Delta?0 = 1.9 kBTc) which excludes dx2-y2
symmetry. We prove the existence of several additional extremely small gaps
(?Delta0 < 1.0 kBTc) that have a profound impact on the low-temperature and
low-field behavior, similar to MgB2, CeCoIn5 and PrOs4Sb12. The zero-field heat
capacity is analyzed in a realistic self-consistent 4-band BCS model which
qualitatively reproduces the recent laser ARPES results of Okazaki et al.
(Science 337 (2012) 1314). Our results show that extremely low-temperature
measurements, i.e. T < 0.1 K, will be required in order to resolve the question
of the existence of line nodes in this compound.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Single chain magnet behaviour in an enantiopure chiral cobalt(II)–copper(II) one-dimensional compound
The self-assembly of an enantiomerically pure, chiral dianionic oxamatocopper(II) complex with cobalt(II) ions leads to neutral oxamato-bridged heterobimetallic chains that combine chirality
and slow magnetic relaxation, providing thus the first example of ‘‘chiral single chain magnets (CSCMs).Ruiz Garcia, Rafael, [email protected] ;

Properties of spin 1/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnets: CuRE2Ge2O8 (RE=Y, La)
We found new two-dimensional (2D) quantum (S=1/2) antiferromagnetic systems:
CuRE2Ge2O8 (RE=Y and La). According to our analysis of high-resolution X-ray
and neutron diffraction experiments, the Cu-network of CuRE2Ge2O8 (RE=Y and La)
exhibits a 2D triangular lattice linked via weak bonds along the perpendicular
b-axis. Our bulk characterizations from 0.08 to 400 K show that they undergo a
long-range order at 0.51(1) and 1.09(4) K for the Y and La systems,
respectively. Interestingly, they also exhibit field induced phase transitions.
For theoretical understanding, we carried out the density functional theory
(DFT) band calculations to find that they are typical charge-transfer-type
insulators with a gap of Eg = 2 eV. Taken together, our observations make
CuRE2Ge2O8 (RE=Y and La) additional examples of low-dimensional quantum spin
triangular antiferromagnets with the low-temperature magnetic ordering.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, and 1 tabl
Fire in a Quantum Mechanical Forest
A new experimental scheme allows the controlled generation and observation of magnetic avalanches,
a cascade of spin flips that propagates through a magnetic sample like a three-dimensional fire.33othe
Observation of the Meissner-Ochsenfeld Effect and the Absence of the Meissner State in UCoGe
International audienceWe present low field magnetization and susceptibility measurements made on a single crystal of the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe. The interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity comes into view in the study of hysteresis along the c axis (easy magnetization axis). The Meissner state (perfect diamagnetism) could not be observed in very low magnetic fields for all three crystallographic directions, implying that the sample is always in the mixed state. Notwithstanding, the Meissner-Ochsenfeld effect (reversible flux expulsion) occurs and is found to be anisotropic. For the c axis in low fields, it is proportional to the bulk magnetization M (and thus to the population of domains) and not to the applied magnetic field H. On a microscopic level, our interpretation of these results implies that flux is expelled independently from each domain proportional to its volume
