The inclusion on innovation networks is a process that contains on its basis, the influence of the competences from the main actors, as well as the relationships network of the later. In an attempt from the companies' side, to develop exploratory projects, with the aim of co-creating value, there is the possibility to profit from a shared knowledge. This kind of knowledge cooperation leads to results that would never be achievable with efforts from a company on its own. Through a case study focused on a design company, this Master Thesis aims to tackle in which way the insertion in innovation networks can lead to the access of competences development. In that sense, not just the design company deserves a deeper analysis, but also the enterprises involved in the exploratory projects. The core of this investigation will be based in the indirect functions of the network relationships. Hence, the main conclusion to present is that the participation in innovation networks, with the objective of creating add-value through exploratory projects, leads to the continued access and development of the competences that benefit the participating enterprises, as well as their portfolio of relationships.N/

Characterisation of microbial attack on archaeological bone

As part of an EU funded project to investigate the factors influencing bone preservation in the archaeological record, more than 250 bones from 41 archaeological sites in five countries spanning four climatic regions were studied for diagenetic alteration. Sites were selected to cover a range of environmental conditions and archaeological contexts. Microscopic and physical (mercury intrusion porosimetry) analyses of these bones revealed that the majority (68%) had suffered microbial attack. Furthermore, significant differences were found between animal and human bone in both the state of preservation and the type of microbial attack present. These differences in preservation might result from differences in early taphonomy of the bones. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved
