Synoptic-scale variability and its relationship with total ozone and Antarctic vortex displacements

The main synoptic-scale circulation anomaly pattern over extratropical South America during the austral spring (September-November) is identified by means of rotated extended empirical orthogonal function techniques, applied to the meridional wind perturbation time series at 300 hPa. The dataset is based on 15 spring seasons (1979-93) of meteorological data from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction-Department of Energy Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project version-2 daily averaged reanalyses, given in 17 vertical levels from 1000 to 10 hPa. The total-ozone daily measurements for the same period are from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer instrument (version 7). The principal synoptic-scale anomaly pattern is associated with an anticyclone-cyclone pair evolving eastward along subpolar latitudes (and hence it is termed the subpolar mode), with a typical length scale of 5000 km and a phase velocity of 8 m s-1. The subpolar-mode waves, which display the main characteristics of midlatitude baroclinic waves, typically maximize near or above the tropopause and propagate upward into the lower stratosphere, showing large amplitudes even at 50 hPa and above. Subpolar-mode-related circulation anomalies are found to be responsible for large total-ozone daily fluctuations near southern South America and nearby regions. In the positive phase of the subpolar mode, total-ozone fluctuations, which are negative, adopt a sigmoid structure, with a zonal scale as large as the anticyclone-cyclone pair. Moreover, it is herein shown that the associated anticyclone produces a local ozone-column decrease to the north and east of its center, due to adiabatic uplift of air parcels in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. At the same time, the downstream cyclonic disturbance is responsible for large negative total-ozone anomalies to the west and south of its center. As the cyclone develops in the lower stratosphere, it promotes the northward incursion of the Antarctic vortex up to about 55°S, along with air masses of highly depleted ozone levels.Fil: Vigliarolo, Paula Karina.

    Get PDF
It is possible to see in the educational speech of these last times, that the word “self evaluation of schools” is more and more used associated to a duty, to the fulfillment of normatives, to a render of account to society and to an internal necessity of schools for their self-regulation. With this article we propose a discussion centered in the way how the model of evaluation CAF (Common Assessment Framework) was implemented in a school. This discussion takes an empirical reference the analysis of the guide documents of the process and it will be framed as a theory in the topic of supervision. With this article, it is also our intension to promove the reflection in all educational actions about the questions raised by the internal evaluation, in a way of possible changes in practices

Overflowing days : flows and routes in/of the portuguese urban culture

    Get PDF
This research - beginning in 2017 - has as main objective understanding a whole set of agents/events/demonstrations/artifacts/fruitions which have been acting as producers/ translators/commutators/transmitters of new Portuguese contemporary urban culture. They are overflowing artistic, social and territorial borders, which gives them uniqueness in the current processes of reconfiguration of identities. This implies an approach of a set of actors/settings/scenes that have been developing activities since the beginning of XXI century in the different cities of the country with particular impact at the crossroads of arts, territories (local, global and translocal) and identities, whose interventions constitute themselves as relevant cultural agents in a perspective of glocalization. We are considering cultural and social spaces with a local basis, which are territorially embedded and with a significant identity nature, whose processes and dynamics will provide a new dimension to explore Portuguese culture, once overflowed to other territories and dimensions (international, for example). Keywords: scenes, creativity, territories, arts, translocal

MODELLING TOURISM DEMAND: A COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORKS AND THE BOX-JENKINS METHODOLOGY

    Get PDF
This study seeks to investigate and highlight the usefulness of the Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) methodology as an alternative to the Box-Jenkins methodology in analysing tourism demand. To this end, each of the above-mentioned methodologies is centred on the treatment, analysis and modelling of the tourism time series: “Nights Spent in Hotel Accommodation per Month”, recorded in the period from January 1987 to December 2006, since this is one of the variables that best expresses effective demand. The study was undertaken for the North and Centre regions of Portugal. The results showed that the model produced by using the ANN methodology presented satisfactory statistical and adjustment qualities, suggesting that it is suitable for modelling and forecasting the reference series, when compared with the model produced by using the Box?Jenkins methodology.Artificial Neural Networks; ARIMA Models; Time Series Forecasting

A social representations approach to the communication between different spheres: an analysis of the impacts of two discursive formats

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the potential of the notions of reification and consensualization as developed by the theory of social representations as analytical tools for addressing the communication between the lay and scientific spheres. Social Representations Theory started by offering an over-sharp distinction between the reified and the consensual universes of which science and common sense, respectively, were presented as paradigmatic. This paper, however, suggests that the notions of consensual and reified can be considered as describing two distinct communicative formats: reification implying the use of arguments which establish prescriptions for representations and action, and consensualization relying on arguments which recognize the heterogeneity of representation and action. We illustrate this proposal through the analysis of a case in which the expert and the lay spheres of a Lisbon neighborhood opposed each other regarding the new laws of public participation in community matters. This analysis showed how reification and consensualization can be used as discursive formats by both spheres. The implications of the use of reification and consensualization and how they may depend on several power resources and have different impacts on social change are discussed

This paper aims to contextualize and discuss the phenomenon of new psychoactive substances , focusing the Portuguese reality and highlighting the example of the smartshops, the Portuguese brick and mortar stores. New Psychoactive Substances (NSP) are an emergent phenomenon of drugs, consisting in the appearance or reappearance of new groups of substances on the market in which, according to their chemical composition, ways of use and means of acquisition are similar to conventional drugs, but with new features. Subdividing this phenomenon in two key-moments associated with the phenomenon in Portugal - before and after the Decree Law 54/2013 of 17th April - the NSP issue is here presented mainly from its global and scientific definition, subsequently framed due its cyclical phases in Portugal, policies and revalence of consumption among the people.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Psichological capital and telework

The year 2020 will go down in history due to the global pandemic of COVID-19, it was a year of great challenges, which forced companies to speed up procedures, define new ways of working, as well as implement the digital transformation that has been going on for so many years. This survival instinct brought a new mindset to managers, workers and teams, who were forced to reduce resistance to change and recognized the real need to innovate. With this work, we intend to understand if the new work models applied in the context of a pandemic, more specifically telework, have the possibility of being considered as a form of future work in the sectors of activity in which it is possible to implement it. For this, we will evaluate the psychosocial risks that this decision can cause in people, through the mediation of Psychological Capital (Psycap), in a sample of 240 people from a private company. With this model, we were able to measure that the correlation between psychological capital and self-motivation people are better prepared and can see more advantages in the practice of teleworking.

The Arroyo Malo Formation at Alumbre Creek, on the northern bank of the Atuel River, west central Argentina, comprises a c. 300 m thick continuous marine succession across the Triassic-Jurassic System boundary, consisting of massive and laminated pelites indicative of a slope depositional environment. Late Triassic invertebrates, including ammonoids, nautiloids, bivalves, gastropods, brachiopods and corals are restricted to the lower 150 m. Beds between 125-135 m from the bottom yield Choristoceras cf. marshi Hauer, a species found in the Marshi/Crickmayi Zone of Europe and North America, together with loose fragments of Psiloceras cf. pressum Hillebrandt, coeval with the lower to middle part of the Hettangian Planorbis Zone. About 80 m higher are beds yielding Psiloceras cf. rectocostatum Hillebrandt, a species that gives name to an Andean biozone partially coeval with the Johnstoni and Plicatulum Subzones, upper Planorbis Zone. Other fossils recorded in the Rhaetian strata of this section are foraminifers, ostracods and plant remains identified as Zuberia cf. zuberi (Szaj.) Freng. and Clathropteris sp. The section was also sampled for conodonts and radiolarians, thus far with negative results. Enhancing student well-being: the Impact of a mindfulness-based program (Mind7+) on stress, anxiety, sleep quality, and social Interactions in a sample of portuguese university students

    Get PDF
There is an urgent need to promote mental health strategies in university students, and mindfulness-based interventions provide alternative and complementary approaches. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of a mind-fulness-based program (Mind7+) on Portuguese students from the Polytechnic University of Santarem, focusing on stress levels, depression, anxiety, and sleep quality. The intervention consisted of a 8 week mindfulness-based program, with six presential sessions and two online sessions. The participants completed self-filled validated questionnaires before and after intervention. The study revealed that Mind7+ program not only positively influenced stress levels, anxiety, and sleep quality among university students but also had a positive impact on their social interactions. A correlation between sleep quality and frequency of individual practices was observed. The observed medium effect size under-scores the practical relevance of Mind7+ program and the potential of mindfulness-based interventions in higher education to enhance both individual well-being and social connections.N/
