Impingement of Droplets in 60 Deg Elbows with Potential Flow
Trajectories were determined for water droplets or other aerosol particles in air flowing through 600 elbows especially designed for two-dimensional potential motion. The elbows were established by selecting as walls of each elbow two streamlines of a flow field produced by a complex potential function that establishes a two-dimensional flow around. a 600 bend. An unlimited number of elbows with slightly different shapes can be established by selecting different pairs of streamlines as walls. Some of these have a pocket on the outside wall. The elbows produced by the complex potential function are suitable for use in aircraft air-inlet ducts and have the following characteristics: (1) The resultant velocity at any point inside the elbow is always greater than zero but never exceeds the velocity at the entrance. (2) The air flow field at the entrance and exit is almost uniform and rectilinear. (3) The elbows are symmetrical with respect to the bisector of the angle of bend. These elbows should have lower pressure losses than bends of constant cross-sectional area. The droplet impingement data derived from the trajectories are presented along with equations so that collection efficiency, area, rate, and distribution of droplet impingement can be determined for any elbow defined by any pair of streamlines within a portion of the flow field established by the complex potential function. Coordinates for some typical streamlines of the flow field and velocity components for several points along these streamlines are presented in tabular form. A comparison of the 600 elbow with previous calculations for a comparable 90 elbow indicated that the impingement characteristics of the two elbows were very similar

Kinematics and control algorithm development and simulation for a redundant two-arm robotic manipulator system
An efficient approach to cartesian motion and force control of a 7 degree of freedom (DOF) manipulator is presented. It is based on extending the active stiffness controller to the 7 DOF case in general and use of an efficient version of the gradient projection technique for solving the inverse kinematics problem. Cooperative control is achieved through appropriate configuration of individual manipulator controllers. In addition, other aspects of trajectory generation using standard techniques are integrated into the controller. The method is then applied to a specific manipulator of interest (Robotics Research T-710). Simulation of the kinematics, dynamics, and control are provided in the context of several scenarios: one pertaining to a noncontact pick and place operation; one relating to contour following where contact is made between the manipulator and environment; and one pertaining to cooperative control

Industrial sustainability in a challenged economy : the Zimbabwe steel industry
Abstract: The economy of Zimbabwe has deteriorated over the years with hyperinflation. In the years 2006 to 2008 the conditions worsened and in 2009 a multicurrency system including the US dollar was introduced, however investment in the industry did not strengthen and a number of challenges are still faced by the industry. A main feature of the Industry in Zimbabwe had been the steel and steel related manufacturing industry which was key for both domestic and foreign markets. The motivation for this study was to investigate and propose st rategies for enhancing sustainability of steel making companies in Zimbabwe. The aim of this research was to undertake a requirements analysis from the steel companies and identify the main challenges from the point of view of steel production. From these challenges the paper aimed to help codefine some of the possible solutions the companies could consider. Sharing the findings could help companies pick up best practice and inform policy makers in developing new frameworks for improving industrial sustainability
A Study of the Problems of Cost Analysis in the Petroleum Industry
The significance of the subject of the present study-the cost of finding, developing and producing petroleum-can be better understood by placing it against a summary view of the supply situation in the postwar world. The most striking fact is the appearance of vast new reserves of oil in various parts of the world. Earlier concern over conservation was aroused by the fear of depletion of the available supply. Taking a long view, this possibility is not to be dismissed. But in recent years the practical problems of the industry, and of public policy toward it, are of a different sort. The capacity of the industry to produce in the countries of the free world greatly exceeds the current rates of consumption. From the sellers\u27 point of view, at least, it seems self-evident that too much oil exists today
Representation of Lexical Form: Evidence From Studies of Sublexical Ambiguity
The authors examined the role of intermediate, sublexical representations in spoken word perception. In particular, they tested whether flaps, which are neutralized allophones of intervocalic /t/s and /d/s, map onto their underlying phonemic counterparts. In 2 shadowing tasks, the authors found that flaps primed their carefully articulated counterparts, and vice versa. Because none of the flapped stimuli were lexically ambiguous (e.g., between rater and raider), these results provide evidence that such priming is sublexically mediated. Therefore, the current study provides further insights into when underlying form-based representations are activated during spoken word processing. In particular, the authors argue that phonological ambiguity, inherent in their flapped stimuli, is one of the conditions leading to the activation of underlying representations
