Cost-Effectiveness of Targeted Reemployment Bonuses
Targeting reemployment bonus offers to unemployment insurance (UI) claimants identified as most likely to exhaust benefits is estimated to reduce benefit payments. While earlier research indicated that non-targeted reemployment bonus offers would not be good public policy, in this paper we show that targeting bonus offers with profiling models similar to those in state Worker Profiling and Reemployment Services (WPRS) systems can improve their cost effectiveness. Since estimated average benefit payments do not steadily decline as the eligibility screen is gradually tightened, we find that narrow targeting is not optimal. Wildlife damage management was so much simpler in the good old days. If deer (Odocoileus virginianus), beaver (Castor canadensis), or other animals were a problem in a particular situation, people simply had them shot, trapped, or poisoned. Not many years ago, most people would go along with this approach, and those who didn\u27t like it were marginalized as the radical fringe. Not so today. Greater and more diverse segments of the public want a say in what professionals decide to do with their wildlife. The public wants to participate in setting objectives for management and in approving the methods for accomplishing those objectives. Kania and Conover (1991) emphasized that wildlife agencies should respond to these societal changes rather than resist them, thereby enhancing the value of the wildlife resource for all people. Changes in sociopolitical values have resulted in more stakeholder groups who want to be included in wildlife management decisions today than at any other time since the advent of applied wildlife management in North America (Curtis and Richmond 1992)
Relativistic calculations of pionic and kaonic atoms hyperfine structure
We present the relativistic calculation of the hyperfine structure in pionic
and kaonic atoms. A perturbation method has been applied to the Klein-Gordon
equation to take into account the relativistic corrections. The perturbation
operator has been obtained \textit{via} a multipole expansion of the nuclear
electromagnetic potential. The hyperfine structure of pionic and kaonic atoms
provide an additional term in the quantum electrodynamics calculation of the
energy transition of these systems. Such a correction is required for a recent
measurement of the pion mass
