GPI PSF subtraction with TLOCI: the next evolution in exoplanet/disk high-contrast imaging
To directly image exoplanets and faint circumstellar disks, the noisy stellar
halo must be suppressed to a high level. To achieve this feat, the angular
differential imaging observing technique and the least-squares Locally
Optimized Combination of Images (LOCI) algorithm have now become the standard
in single band direct imaging observations and data reduction. With the
development and commissioning of new high-order high-contrast adaptive optics
equipped with integral field units, the image subtraction algorithm needs to be
modified to allow the optimal use of polychromatic images, field-rotated images
and archival data. A new algorithm, TLOCI (for Template LOCI), is designed to
achieve this task by maximizing a companion signal-to-noise ratio instead of
simply minimizing the noise as in the original LOCI algorithm. The TLOCI
technique uses an input spectrum and template Point Spread Functions (PSFs,
generated from unocculted and unsaturated stellar images) to optimize the
reference image least-squares coefficients to minimize the planet
self-subtraction, thus maximizing its throughput per wavelength, while
simultaneously providing a maximum suppression of the speckle noise. The new
algorithm has been developed using on-sky GPI data and has achieved impressive
contrast. This paper presents the TLOCI algorithm, on-sky performance, and will
discuss the challenges in recovering the planet spectrum with high fidelity.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Proceedings of SPIE 914
Assessing Pre-service Teachers Prior to Certification: Perspectives on the Performance Assessment for California Teachers (PACT)
This study focuses on pre-service teachers’ perspectives regarding how the process of completing the Performance Assessment for California Teachers (PACT) affected them academically, professionally, and personally. Two cohorts participated in this year-two study. Pre-service teachers’ perspectives were acquired using a survey instrument comprised of open-ended questions. In addition, pre-service teachers’ self-confidence levels pertaining to assessment task components of PACT (i.e., planning, instruction, assessment, reflection, and academic language) were measured prior to the execution of PACT portfolio assessment and these levels were compared to the actual scores on PACT. This study concludes with implications for teacher educators and teacher education programs implementing pre-service teacher assessments; these implications include policy level suggestions as well as a discussion of intended and unintended consequences of the PACT assessment on the pre-service teachers
A fascinating multifaceted redox-active chelating ligand: introducing the N,N′-dimethyl-3,3′-biquinoxalinium “methylbiquinoxen” platform
To intimately combine a chelating ligand function with the numerous properties of a viologen-like redox-active centre would offer a rare possibility to design controllable multi-redox states, whose properties arise from strongly correlated phenomena between the organic ligand as well as with any metalloid coordinated centres. Such a concept previously proved to be feasible, however is not widely applicable owing to challenges in terms of synthesis, isolation, and aerial sensitivity of both the ligand and its metal complexes. Here we report the first stable example of such a redox-active molecule, N,N′-dimethyl-3,3′-biquinoxalinium2+/˙+/0 “methylbiquinoxen, MBqn2+/˙+/0”, which shows a rich redox chemistry and chelates a metal ion in the case of the metal complex [CdCl2(MBqn0)]. This goes beyond what is possible to achieve using viologens, which are limited by not providing chelation as well as having no accessible biradicaloid state, corresponding to the neutral direduced MBqn0 open-shell behaviour we observe here
Chilaiditi’s Syndrome
the surgical team for management of a suspected perforated duodenal ulcer. Subsequent CT imaging of thorax and abdomen revealed hepato-diaphragmatic interposition of the transverse colon, as well as extensive colitis. He was managed conservatively and discharged home well after four days. Chilaiditi’s sign is the appearance of free air under the diaphragm caused by interposition of the transverse colon between the liver and diaphragm. It is usually asymptomatic and is an incidental finding. It is estimated to occur in 0.25% to 0.28 % of the general population 1 and was first described by Demetrious Chilaiditi in 1910. 2 When the sign is observed in association with symptoms such as abdominal pain or vomiting it is termed Chilaiditi’s syndrome. It is in this scenario that the radiographic findings may be mistaken fo
The early thermal and magnetic state of the cratered highlands of Mars
Surface heat flows are calculated from elastic lithosphere thicknesses for the heavy cratered highlands of Mars, in terms of the fraction of the surface heat flow derived from crustal heat sources. Previous heat flow estimations for Mars used linear thermal gradients, which is equivalent to ignoring the existence of heat sources within the crust. We compute surface heat flows following a methodology that relates effective thickness and curvature of an elastic plate with the strength envelope of the lithosphere, and assuming crustal heat sources homogeneously distributed in a radioactive element-rich layer 20 or 60 km thick. The obtained results show that the surface heat flow increases with the proportion of heat sources within the crust, and with the decrease of both radioactive element-rich layer thickness and surface temperature. Also, the results permit us to calculate representative temperatures for the crust base, rock strength for the upper mantle, and lower and upper limits to the crustal magnetization depth and intensity, respectively. For Terra Cimmeria, an effective elastic thickness of 12 km implies between 30% and 80% of heat sources located within the crust. In this case the uppermost mantle would be weak at the time of loading, and temperatures in the lower crust cold enough to favor unrelaxed crustal thickness variations and to permit deep Curie depths in the highlands, as suggested by the observational evidence

PARAZITI Jainus amazonensis (MONOGENEA: DACTYLOGYRIDAE) KOD VRSTE Brycon cephalus (GĂśNTHER, 1869) UZGOJENE U NIZINSKOM DIJELU PERUANSKE AMAZONE
Brycon cephalus Günther, 1869, (Characidae: Bryoconinae) represents a socio-economically important species in the Amazon basin and actually semi-intensive and intensive production for human consumption has emerged in the last years. Therefore, more studies are required in fish farming development, especially concerning the populations of parasites that are affecting production yields. In this sense, the present study intended to evaluate the parasitic infection in B. cephalus bred in a fish farm of the Peruvian Amazon. This study identified a high infestation of the monogenean Jainus amazonensis in semi-intensive fish farming of B. cephalus. The prevalence was 100%. The mean intensity and abundance of the parasite was 230 of parasites per individual. This is the first report of a high infestation by J. amazonensis in cultured B. cephalus from the Peruvian Amazon.
