Bilingual vocabulary size and lexical reading in Italian
In the present study we investigated how the vocabulary size of English-Italian bilinguals affects reading aloud in Italian (L2) modulating the reader\u27s sensitivity to lexical aspects of the language. We divided adult bilinguals in two groups according to their vocabulary size (Larger - LV, and smaller - SV), and compared their naming performance to that of native Italian (NI) readers. In Experiment 1 we investigated the lexicality and word frequency effects in reading aloud. Similarly to NI, both groups of bilinguals showed these effects. In Experiment 2 we investigated stress assignment - which is not predictable by rule - to Italian words. The SV group made more stress errors in reading words with a non-dominant stress pattern compared to the LV group. The results suggest that the size of the reader\u27s L2 lexicon affects the probability of correct reading aloud. Overall, the results indicate that proficient adult bilinguals show a similar sensibility to the statistical and distributional properties of the language as compared to Italian monolinguals
Emerging technology to develop novel red winemaking practices: An overview
Nowadays, making modifications to traditional practices and/or adopting novel processing technologies is of great interest in order to fulfill consumers expectations towards food products characterized by convenience, variety, adequate shelf-life and caloric content, healthy properties, reasonable cost, and environmental sustainability. In this perspective, the role of emerging technologies in winemaking is addressed towards reduced production time, optimized resources and spaces, extraction of high nutraceutic components through mechanical effects, high energy efficiency, extended shelf-life, lowering SO2 addition and its final concentration. This paper is the outcome of an extensive and comprehensive literature review describing, by an integrated approach, the main characteristics and applications of three emerging technologies (US, MW, and PEF) alternative to the traditional winemaking processes. Their advantages related to the safety aspects of wine, such as the ability to improve nutraceutic and sensorial features are also described. Industrial relevance The food industry is currently interested in a variety of novel production and emerging technologies that may result in economical and quality products. This review shows as numerous researches have strongly demonstrated the great benefits of new emerging technologies, such as PEF, US, and MW, into the oenological industry, either increasing compounds extraction during maceration of the must or accelerating stabilization stage in the wine. Emerging technologies could offer better products to consumers with added value in terms of nutritional or sensorial characteristics, and guarantee higher profit for the industry, even reducing process time and use of natural resources, such as energy, water, and chemicals
Factors associated with material deprivation in persons with multiple sclerosis in Switzerland: Cross-sectional data from the Swiss Multiple Sclerosis Registry.
BACKGROUND
Multiple sclerosis (MS) impacts education, future career pathways and working capability and therefore may negatively impact the financial situation of persons with MS (pwMS) in Switzerland. We therefore investigated the financial situation and its influencing sociodemographic and disease-specific factors of pwMS compared to the general Swiss population with focus on material deprivation (MD).
METHODS
Data on the financial situation of pwMS were collected via a specific questionnaire added to the regular, semi-annual follow-up assessments of the Swiss Multiple Sclerosis Registry. Questions were taken in an unmodified format from the standardized "Statistics on Income and Living Conditions" (SILC) questionnaire 2019 of the Federal Statistical Office of Switzerland which evaluates the financial situation of the general Swiss population, enabling a direct comparison of pwMS with the general Swiss population.
RESULTS
PwMS were 1.5 times more frequently affected by MD than the general Swiss population (6.3% of pwMS versus 4.2% of the general Swiss population) which was confirmed in a multivariable logistic regression analysis of pooled SILC and Swiss Multiple Sclerosis Registry (SMSR) data. High symptom burden, having only mandatory schooling, well as having a pending disability insurance application (as opposed to no application or receiving benefits) were associated with a higher odds of MD whereas higher education, older age, having a Swiss citizenship, living with a spouse or a partner or being currently employed were independently associated with a lower odds of MD.
CONCLUSION
MS has a negative impact on the financial situation and is associated with MD. PwMS with a high symptom burden at the transition from work force to receiving disability benefits appeared to be vulnerable for MD. Higher education, older age, having a Swiss citizenship, living with a spouse or a partner or being currently employed were independently associated with a lower odds of MD

Wine Lees as Source of Antioxidant Molecules: Green Extraction Procedure and Biological Activity
An ultrasound-assisted extraction method, employing ethanol and water as solvents at low temperature (30 °C) and reduced time (15 min), was proposed to extract bioactive molecules from different cultivars (Magliocco Canino, Magliocco Rosato, Gaglioppo, and Nocera Rosso) of wine lees. All the extract yields were evaluated and their contents of phenolic acids, flavonoids, and total polyphenols were determined by means of colorimetric assays and high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode-array detection (HPLC-DAD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) techniques. Radical scavenging assays were performed and the Magliocco Canino extracted with a hydroalcoholic mixture returned the best results both against ABTS (0.451 mg mL−1) and DPPH (0.395 mg mL−1) radicals. The chemometric algorithms principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square regression (PLS) were used to process the data obtained from all qualitative–quantitative sample determinations with the aim of highlighting data patterns and finding possible correlations between composition and antioxidant features of the different wine lees cultivars and the extraction procedures. Wine lees from Magliocco Canino and Magliocco Rosato were found to be the best vegetable matrices in terms of metabolite content and antioxidant properties. The components extracted with alcoholic or hydroalcoholic solvents, specifically (−)-epigallocatechin gallate, chlorogenic acid, and trans-caftaric acid, were found to be correlated with the antioxidant capacity of the extracts. Multivariate data processing was able to identify the compounds related to the antioxidant features. Two PLS models were optimized by using their concentration levels to predict the IC50 values of the extracts in terms of DPPH and ABTS with high values of correlation coefficient R2, 0.932 and 0.824, respectively, and a prediction error lower than 0.07. Finally, cellular (SH-SY5Y cells) antioxidant assays were performed on the best extract (the hydroalcoholic extract of Magliocco Canino cv) to confirm its biological performance against radical species. All these recorded data strongly outline the aptness of valorizing wine lees as a valuable source of antioxidants
Synthesis and characterization of electrospun sorbent for the solid-phase extraction of fluoroquinolones in human plasma and their UHPLC-PDA determination
In this work we investigated the synthesis and the characterization of electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) stabilized in air, made in a 5:1 ratio, used as sorbent for the solid-phase extraction of fluoroquinolones in plasma samples and the following quantification in UHPLC-PDA. Preliminary analyses of viscosity were carried out on the polymer solution to be sure about the electrospinability. Characterizations were performed on the electrospun membrane to evaluate the morphology (SEM scanning electron microscopy and AFM atomic force microscopy), the thermal degradation behavior (TGA thermogravimetric analysis), the porosity and the surface area (BET, Brunauer Emmett Teller), and the quantitative and qualitative distribution of atomic structures (FTIR infrared analysis in Fourier transform and EDX Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis). A solid-phase extraction method was developed by studying parameters such as the amount of sorbent and the pH of the sample. Finally, a UHPLC-PDA method for the analysis of fluoroquinolones was developed and validated in accordance with the guidelines and successfully applied. The use of the prepared sorbent combined with UHPLC-PDA has allowed the development of a method whose strengths are its speed, accuracy, sensitivity, and high recoveries.

Human mesenchymal stem cells labelled with dye-loaded amorphous silica nanoparticles: long-term biosafety, stemness preservation and traceability in the beating heart
Treatment of myocardial infarction with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) has proven beneficial effects in both animal and clinical studies. Engineered silica nanoparticles (SiO2-NPs) have been extensively used as contrast agents in regenerative medicine, due to their resistance to degradation and ease of functionalization. However, there are still controversies on their effective biosafety on cellular systems. In this perspective, the aims of the present study are: 1) to deeply investigate the impact of amorphous 50 nm SiO2-NPs on viability and function of human bone marrow-derived MSCs (hMSCs); 2) to optimize a protocol of harmless hMSCs labelling and test its feasibility in a beating heart model. Optimal cell labelling is obtained after 16 h exposure of hMSCs to fluorescent 50 nm SiO2-NPs (50 µg mL(-1)); interestingly, lysosomal activation consequent to NPs storage is not associated to oxidative stress. During prolonged culture hMSCs do not undergo cyto- or genotoxicity, preserve their proliferative potential and their stemness/differentiation properties. Finally, the bright fluorescence emitted by internalized SiO2-NPs allows both clear visualization of hMSCs in normal and infarcted rat hearts and ultrastructural analysis of cell engraftment inside myocardial tissue. Overall, 50 nm SiO2-NPs display elevated compatibility with hMSCs in terms of lack of cyto- and genotoxicity and maintenance of important features of these cells. The demonstrated biosafety, combined with proper cell labelling and visualization in histological sections, make these SiO2-NPs optimal candidates for the purpose of stem cell tracking inside heart tissue
Label-Free Intracellular Multi-Specificity in Yeast Cells by Phase-Contrast Tomographic Flow Cytometry
: In-flow phase-contrast tomography provides a 3D refractive index of label-free cells in cytometry systems. Its major limitation, as with any quantitative phase imaging approach, is the lack of specificity compared to fluorescence microscopy, thus restraining its huge potentialities in single-cell analysis and diagnostics. Remarkable results in introducing specificity are obtained through artificial intelligence (AI), but only for adherent cells. However, accessing the 3D fluorescence ground truth and obtaining accurate voxel-level co-registration of image pairs for AI training is not viable for high-throughput cytometry. The recent statistical inference approach is a significant step forward for label-free specificity but remains limited to cells' nuclei. Here, a generalized computational strategy based on a self-consistent statistical inference to achieve intracellular multi-specificity is shown. Various subcellular compartments (i.e., nuclei, cytoplasmic vacuoles, the peri-vacuolar membrane area, cytoplasm, vacuole-nucleus contact site) can be identified and characterized quantitatively at different phases of the cells life cycle by using yeast cells as a biological model. Moreover, for the first time, virtual reality is introduced for handling the information content of multi-specificity in single cells. Full fruition is proofed for exploring and interacting with 3D quantitative biophysical parameters of the identified compartments on demand, thus opening the route to a metaverse for 3D microscopy
Early retinal flow changes after vitreoretinal surgery in idiopathic epiretinal membrane using swept source optical coherence tomography angiography
(1) Background: The aim of this observational cross-sectional work was to investigate early retinal vascular changes in patients undergoing idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM) surgery using swept source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA); (2) Methods: 24 eyes of 24 patients who underwent vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling were evaluated pre- and postoperatively using SS-OCTA system (PLEX Elite 9000, Carl Zeiss Meditec Inc., Dublin, CA, USA). For each eye, five 6x6-mm OCTA volume scans were acquired by two observers independently. The en face images of superficial capillary plexus (SCP) were then exported to imageJ and a semi-automated algorithm was used for subsequent quantitative analysis. Perfusion density (PD), vessel length density (VLD), vessel diameter index (VDI) and vessel tortuosity (VT) of SCP were evaluated in both the parafoveal (2.5 mm diameter) and perifoveal areas (5.5 mm diameter); (3) Results: At OCTA analysis statistically significant differences were found between controls and diseased eyes for all parameters in parafoveal and perifoveal regions (p < 0.001; p < 0.05) except for perifoveal VLD. During 6-month follow up, both anatomical/perfusion and functional parameters showed a statistically significant improvement if compared to preoperative values. In detail, at one-month post vitrectomy, VLD and VT significantly changed in parafoveal region (p = 0.043; p = 0.045), while PD and VDI showed a trend of increase in both parafoveal and perifoveal region. At 6 months after surgery, PD, VLD and VT of parafoveal region significantly improved (p = 0.021, p = 0.018, p = 0.047 respectively). (4) Conclusions: SS-OCTA provides a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the superficial capillary plexus allowing for early vascular changes assessment after vitrectomy with iERM and ILM peeling
