Magnetic fluctuations and superconductivity in Fe pnictides probed by electron spin resonance
The electron spin resonance absorption spectrum of Eu^{2+} ions serves as a
probe of the normal and superconducting state in Eu_{0.5}K_{0.5}Fe_2As_2. The
spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1^{\rm ESR} obtained from the ESR linewidth
exhibits a Korringa-like linear increase with temperature above T_C evidencing
a normal Fermi-liquid behavior. Below 45 K deviations from the Korringa-law
occur which are ascribed to enhanced magnetic fluctuations within the FeAs
layers upon approaching the superconducting transition. Below T_C the
spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1^{\rm ESR} follows a T^{1.5}-behavior without

Assessing Non-Invasive Liver Function in Patients With Intestinal Failure Receiving Total Parenteral Nutrition-Results From the Prospective PNLiver Trial
Liver abnormalities in intestinal failure (IF) patients receiving parenteral nutrition (PN) can progress undetected by standard laboratory tests to intestinal failure associated liver disease (IFALD). The aim of this longitudinal study is to evaluate the ability of non-invasive liver function tests to assess liver function following the initiation of PN. Twenty adult patients with IF were prospectively included at PN initiation and received scheduled follow-up assessments after 6, 12, and 24 months between 2014 and 2019. Each visit included liver assessment (LiMAx [Liver Maximum Capacity] test, ICG [indocyanine green] test, FibroScan), laboratory tests (standard laboratory test, NAFLD [non-alcoholic fatty liver disease] score, FIB-4 [fibrosis-4] score), nutritional status (bioelectrical impedance analysis, indirect calorimetry), and quality of life assessment. The patients were categorized post-hoc based on their continuous need for PN into a reduced parenteral nutrition (RPN) group and a stable parenteral nutrition (SPN) group. While the SPN group (n = 9) had significantly shorter small bowel length and poorer nutritional status at baseline compared to the RPN group (n = 11), no difference in liver function was observed between the distinct groups. Over time, liver function determined by LiMAx did continuously decrease from baseline to 24 months in the SPN group but remained stable in the RPN group. This decrease in liver function assessed with LiMAx in the SPN group preceded deterioration of all other investigated liver function tests during the study period. Our results suggest that the liver function over time is primarily determined by the degree of intestinal failure. Furthermore, the LiMAx test appeared more sensitive in detecting early changes in liver function in comparison to other liver function tests
Protocol TOP-Study (tacrolimus organ perfusion): a prospective randomized multicenter trial to reduce ischemia reperfusion injury in transplantation of marginal liver grafts with an "ex vivo" tacrolimus perfusion
Background: Critical organ shortage results in the utilization of extended donor criteria (EDC) liver grafts. These marginal liver grafts are prone to increased ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) which may contribute to deteriorated graft function and survival. Experimental data have shown that the calcineurin inhibitor tacrolimus exerts protective effects on hepatic IRI when applied intravenously or directly as a hepatic rinse. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to examine the effects of an ex vivo tacrolimus perfusion on IRI in transplantation of EDC liver grafts.
Methods/Design: The TOP-Study (tacrolimus organ perfusion) is a randomized multicenter trial comparing the ex vivo tacrolimus perfusion of marginal liver grafts with placebo. We hypothesize that a tacrolimus rinse reduces IRI, potentially improving organ survival following transplantation of EDC livers. The study includes livers with two or more EDC, according to Eurotransplant International Foundation’s definition of EDC livers. Prior to implantation, livers randomized to the treatment group are rinsed with tacrolimus at a concentration of 20 ng/ml in 1000 ml Custodiol solution and in the placebo group with Custodiol alone. The primary endpoint is the maximum serum alanine transamninase (ALT) level within the first 48 hours after surgery; however, the study design also includes a 1-year observation period following transplantation. The TOP-Study is an investigator-initiated trial sponsored by the University of Munich Hospital. Seven other German transplant centers are participating (Berlin, Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Mainz, Münster, Regensburg, Tübingen) and aim to include a total of 86 patients.
Discussion: Tacrolimus organ perfusion represents a promising strategy to reduce hepatic IRI following the transplantation of marginal liver grafts. This treatment may help to improve the function of EDC grafts and therefore safely expand the donor pool in light of critical organ shortage.

Characterization of Hydrogen Plasma Defined Graphene Edges
We investigate the quality of hydrogen plasma defined graphene edges by Raman
spectroscopy, atomic resolution AFM and low temperature electronic transport
measurements. The exposure of graphite samples to a remote hydrogen plasma
leads to the formation of hexagonal shaped etch pits, reflecting the anisotropy
of the etch. Atomic resolution AFM reveals that the sides of these hexagons are
oriented along the zigzag direction of the graphite crystal lattice and the
absence of the D-peak in the Raman spectrum indicates that the edges are high
quality zigzag edges. In a second step of the experiment, we investigate
hexagon edges created in single layer graphene on hexagonal boron nitride and
find a substantial D-peak intensity. Polarization dependent Raman measurements
reveal that hydrogen plasma defined edges consist of a mixture of zigzag and
armchair segments. Furthermore, electronic transport measurements were
performed on hydrogen plasma defined graphene nanoribbons which indicate a high
quality of the bulk but a relatively low edge quality, in agreement with the
Raman data. These findings are supported by tight-binding transport
simulations. Hence, further optimization of the hydrogen plasma etching
technique is required to obtain pure crystalline graphene edges.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

Somatostatin receptor PET/CT in restaging of typical and atypical lung carcinoids
Background To assess the role of somatostatin receptor (SR) PET/CT using Ga-68
DOTATOC or DOTATATE in staging and restaging of typical (TC) and atypical (AC)
lung carcinoids. Methods Clinical and PET/CT data were retrospectively
analyzed in 27 patients referred for staging (N = 5; TC, N = 4; AC, N = 1) or
restaging (N = 22; TC, N = 8; AC, N = 14). Maximum standardized uptake value
(SUVmax) of SR-positive lesions was normalized to the SUVmax of the liver to
generate SUVratio; SR PET was compared to contrast-enhanced (ce) CT. The
classification system proposed by Rindi et al. (Endocr Relat Cancer.
2014;21(1):1-16, 2014) was used for classification of patients in TC and AC
groups. Results Only 18/27 patients were found to have metastases on PET/CT.
Of the 186 lesions, 101 (54.3 %) were depicted on both PET and CT, 53 (28.5 %)
lesions only on CT, and 32 (17.2 %) only on PET. SUVratio of lesions was
significantly higher in AC as compared to TC (p < 0.001). In patients referred
for restaging, additional findings on PET lead to upstaging with change in
management strategy in 5/22 (22.7 %) patients (AC, N = 5; TC, N = 1). In four
patients (all AC) referred for restaging and in one patient (TC) referred for
staging, additional findings on CT missed on PET lead to correct staging.
Conclusions Typical and atypical carcinoid patients have complex patterns of
metastases which make it necessary to combine functional SR PET and contrast-
enhanced CT for appropriate restaging. In patients referred for restaging SR,
PET may have a relevant impact on treatment strategy in up to 22.7 of patients
with typical and atypical lung carcinoids

Structural investigations of the regio- and enantioselectivity of lipases
Although lipases are widely applied for the stereospecific resolution of racemic mixtures of esters, the atomic details of the factors that are responsible for their stereospecificity are largely obscure. We determined the X-ray structures of Pseudomonas cepacia lipase in complex with two enantiopure triglyceride analogues, that closely mimic natural substrates. This allowed an unambiguous view of how the two wings of the boomerang-shaped active site accommodate the acyl and alcohol parts of the triglyceride. The binding groove for the hydrophobic sn-3 fatty acid chain is large and hydrophobic. The cleft for the alcohol moiety is divided in two parts, one tightly binding the sn-2 acyl chain with hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions, the other more weakly binding the sn-1 fatty acid. The enantioselectivity of Pseudomonas cepacia lipase seems therefore to be predominantly determined by the size and interactions of the sn-2 chain and by the size of the sn-3 chain.
