The Music of Laurence Crane and a Post-Experimental Performance Practice
Laurence Crane’s music is often described as experimental or considered as a continuation of the English experimental tradition. In this first extended examination of Crane’s music it is proposed that, instead of relying upon associations and aesthetic alignments, the music might be considered as experimental through a particularly experimental approach to performance. After a brief overview of Crane’s output his position as a composer is considered within the context of the experimental music tradition. This tradition is then considered in relation to performance practice, both historical and contemporary.
A selection of Crane’s music is examined in the light of that practice, whilst aspects of the composer’s approaches to tonality, instrumentation, form and notation are also highlighted
A model for the study of ligand binding to the ribosomal RNA helix h44.
Oligonucleotide models of ribosomal RNA domains are powerful tools to study the binding and molecular recognition of antibiotics that interfere with bacterial translation. Techniques such as selective chemical modification, fluorescence labeling and mutations are cumbersome for the whole ribosome but readily applicable to model RNAs, which are readily crystallized and often give rise to higher resolution crystal structures suitable for detailed analysis of ligand-RNA interactions. Here, we have investigated the HX RNA construct which contains two adjacent ligand binding regions of helix h44 in 16S ribosomal RNA. High-resolution crystal structure analysis confirmed that the HX RNA is a faithful structural model of the ribosomal target. Solution studies showed that HX RNA carrying a fluorescent 2-aminopurine modification provides a model system that can be used to monitor ligand binding to both the ribosomal decoding site and, through an indirect effect, the hygromycin B interaction region
The November 1987 eclipse of the zeta-Aur system HR 2554
It is confirmed that HR 2554 (G6 II + A0 V) is an atmospheric eclipsing system of the zeta-Aur type. The IUE observations of the Nov. 1987 eclipse indicate that the eclipse of the A star lasts 4 days and is not total. Absorption lines due to the extended atmosphere of the primary can be seen a day before and after the eclipse and are missing 2 days from first and 4th contact. Thus the outer envelope of the primary extends to less than 1 stellar radius beyond the photosphere. Compared to 22 Vul (G3 Ib-II + B9 V), where the absorption can be traced to a few stellar radii, HR 2554 is a more moderate case of mass outflow, which implies there is reduced interaction of the secondary within the wind from the primary as is seen in the other zeta-Aur systems
