Population Genetics and Economic Growth
This paper builds an age-structural model of human population genetics in which agents are endowed with a high-dimensional genome that determines their cognitive and physical characteristics. Young adults optimally search for a marriage partner, work for firms, consume goods, save for old age and, if married, decide how many children to have. Applying the fundamental genetic operations, children receive genetic material from their parents. An agent's human capital (productivity) is an aggregate of the received genetic endowment and environmental influences. Thus, the population of agents and the economy co-evolve. The model examines the impact of social and economic institutions on economic performance, including inequality in income and genetic attributes, the transition to an information economy, population bottlenecks, matchmaking, and love. We find that institutional factors significantly impact economic performance by affecting marriage, family size, and the intergenerational transmission of genes.growth; population biology; psychology; fertility; marriage; genetics; evolution

Can Emergency Physicians Perform Carotid Artery Point-of-Care Ultrasound to Detect Stenosis in Patients with TIA and Stroke? A Pilot Study
Introduction: Patients with severe, symptomatic carotid stenosis can have their subsequent stroke risk reduced by surgical intervention if performed soon after a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke. Patients presenting to an emergency department (ED) without computed tomography angiography (CTA) with TIA/stroke, may require transfer to another hospital for imaging to rule out carotid artery stenosis. The objective of this study was to determine the test characteristics of carotid artery point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in detecting greater than 50% stenosis in patients presenting with TIA/stroke.Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study on a convenience sample of adult patients presenting to a comprehensive stroke centre with TIA or stroke between June–October 2017. Carotid POCUS was performed. Primary outcome measure, stenosis ≥ 50%, was determined by the final radiology report of CTA. A blinded POCUS expert separately reviewed the archived carotid POCUS scans. We calculated sensitivity and specificity for stenosis ≥ 50%.Results: We conducted POCUS on 75 patients, of which 70 were included in our analyses. Of those 70, 14.3% were diagnosed with greater than 50% stenosis. Carotid POCUS performed as follows: sensitivity 70.0% (95% confidence interval [CI], 34.8%-93.3%); specificity 86.7% (95% CI, 75.4%-94.1%); positive likelihood ratio (LR +) 5.3 (95% CI, 1.2-9.3); negative likelihood ratio (LR -) 0.4 (95% CI, 0.0-0.7). The inter-rater reliability between POCUS performer interpretation and expert interpretation had moderate agreement (k = 0.68). Scans took a mean 6.2 ± 2.2 minutes to complete.Conclusion: Carotid POCUS has low to moderate association with CTA for detection of carotid artery stenosis ≥ 50%. Further research and investigation is needed prior to widespread use of carotid POCUS in patients with acute cerebral ischemia. Additionally, external validity is likely affected by availability of training, maintenance of competency, and experience in more rural centres
Modeling reverberation mapping data II: dynamical modeling of the Lick AGN Monitoring Project 2008 dataset
We present dynamical modeling of the broad line region (BLR) for a sample of
five Seyfert 1 galaxies using reverberation mapping data taken by the Lick AGN
Monitoring Project in 2008. By modeling the AGN continuum light curve and
H line profiles directly we are able to constrain the geometry and
kinematics of the BLR and make a measurement of the black hole mass that does
not depend upon the virial factor, , needed in traditional reverberation
mapping analysis. We find that the geometry of the BLR is generally a thick
disk viewed close to face-on. While the H emission is found to come
preferentially from the far side of the BLR, the mean size of the BLR is
consistent with the lags measured with cross-correlation analysis. The BLR
kinematics are found to be consistent with either inflowing motions or
elliptical orbits, often with some combination of the two. We measure black
hole masses of for Arp
151, for Mrk 1310, for NGC 5548,
for NGC 6814, and for SBS
1116+583A. The factors measured individually for each AGN are found to
correlate with inclination angle, although not with , ,

Effects of pressure on the ferromagnetic state of the CDW compound SmNiC2
We report the pressure response of charge-density-wave (CDW) and
ferromagnetic (FM) phases of the rare-earth intermetallic SmNiC2 up to 5.5 GPa.
The CDW transition temperature (T_{CDW}), which is reflected as a sharp
inflection in the electrical resistivity, is almost independent of pressure up
to 2.18 GPa but is strongly enhanced at higher pressures, increasing from 155.7
K at 2.2 GPa to 279.3 K at 5.5 GPa. Commensurate with the sharp increase in
T_{CDW}, the first-order FM phase transition, which decreases with applied
pressure, bifurcates into the upper (T_{M1}) and lower (T_c) phase transitions
and the lower transition changes its nature to second order above 2.18 GPa.
Enhancement both in the residual resistivity and the Fermi-liquid T^2
coefficient A near 3.8 GPa suggests abundant magnetic quantum fluctuations that
arise from the possible presence of a FM quantum critical point.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

Evaluation of simulated O-3 production efficiency during the KORUS-AQ campaign: Implications for anthropogenic NOx emissions in Korea
We examine O3 production and its sensitivity to precursor gases and boundary layer mixing in Korea by using a 3-D global chemistry transport model and extensive observations during the KORea-US cooperative Air Quality field study in Korea, which occurred in May–June 2016. During the campaign, observed aromatic species onboard the NASA DC-8 aircraft, especially toluene, showed high mixing ratios of up to 10 ppbv, emphasizing the importance of aromatic chemistry in O3 production. To examine the role of VOCs and NOx in O3 chemistry, we first implement a detailed aromatic chemistry scheme in the model, which reduces the normalized mean bias of simulated O3 mixing ratios from –26% to –13%. Aromatic chemistry also increases the average net O3 production in Korea by 37%. Corrections of daytime PBL heights, which are overestimated in the model compared to lidar observations, increase the net O3 production rate by ~10%. In addition, increasing NOx emissions by 50% in the model shows best performance in reproducing O3 production characteristics, which implies that NOx emissions are underestimated in the current emissions inventory. Sensitivity tests show that a 30% decrease in anthropogenic NOx emissions in Korea increases the O3 production efficiency throughout the country, making rural regions ~2 times more efficient in producing O3 per NOx consumed. Simulated O3 levels overall decrease in the peninsula except for urban and other industrial areas, with the largest increase (~6 ppbv) in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA). However, with simultaneous reductions in both NOx and VOCs emissions by 30%, O3 decreases in most of the country, including the SMA. This implies the importance of concurrent emission reductions for both NOx and VOCs in order to effectively reduce O3 levels in Korea
Using Digital Technology to Address Confirmability and Scalability in Thematic Analysis of Participant-Provided Data
This article presents a technique for analyzing large-scale qualitative data to address considerations for scalability and confirmability in thematic analysis of participant-provided data. A network approach provides a consistent means of coding that scales with the size of the dataset and is verifiable using standardized methods. This form of data analysis can be used with smaller data sources including interview transcripts as well as large data sources such as open-ended survey responses. A constructivist (inductive) approach is maintained and needed, however, to aid in interpretation of latent constructs.
