Direct inverse deformation field approach to pelvic-area symmetric image registration

    Get PDF
This paper presents a novel technique for a consistent symmetric deformable image registration based on an accurate method for a direct inversion of a large motion model deformation field. The proposed image registration algorithm maintains one-to-one mapping between registered images by symmetrically warping them to another image. This makes the final estimation of forward and backward deformation fields anatomically plausible and applicable to adaptive prostate radiotherapy. The quantitative validation of the method is performed on magnetic resonance data obtained for pelvis area. The experiments demonstrate the improved robustness in terms of inverse consistency error and estimation accuracy of prostate position in comparison to the previously proposed methods

This paper presents a novel technique for a symmetric deformable image registration based on a new method for fast and accurate direct inversion of a large motion model deformation field. The proposed image registration algorithm maintain a one-to-one mapping between registered images by symmetrically warping them to each other, and by ensuring the inverse consistency criterion at each iteration. This makes the final estimation of forward and backward deformation fields anatomically plausible. The quantitative validation of the method has been performed on magnetic resonance data obtained for a pelvis area demonstrating applicability of the method to adaptive prostate radiotherapy. The experiments demonstrate the improved robustness in terms of inverse consistency error when compared to previously proposed methods for symmetric image registration

AbstractThe solution of the Yang transport equation of the multiple scattering theory of charged particles is discussed. The method of Lie groups is utilized for the purpose of the construction of the solution of this equation. The fundamental solution of the Yang equation is provided as the closed form expression valid in the neighborhood of the center of coordinates

Diffeomorphic image registration with applications to deformation modelling between multiple data sets

Over last years, the diffeomorphic image registration algorithms have been successfully introduced into the field of the medical image analysis. At the same time, the particular usability of these techniques, in majority derived from the solid mathematical background, has been only quantitatively explored for the limited applications such as longitudinal studies on treatment quality, or diseases progression. The thesis considers the deformable image registration algorithms, seeking out those that maintain the medical correctness of the estimated dense deformation fields in terms of the preservation of the object and its neighbourhood topology, offer the reasonable computational complexity to satisfy time restrictions coming from the potential applications, and are able to cope with low quality data typically encountered in Adaptive Radiotherapy (ART). The research has led to the main emphasis being laid on the diffeomorphic image registration to achieve one-to-one mapping between images. This involves introduction of the log-domain parameterisation of the deformation field by its approximation via a stationary velocity field. A quantitative and qualitative examination of existing and newly proposed algorithms for pairwise deformable image registration presented in this thesis, shows that the log-Euclidean parameterisation can be successfully utilised in the biomedical applications. Although algorithms utilising the log-domain parameterisation have theoretical justification for maintaining diffeomorphism, in general, the deformation fields produced by them have similar properties as these estimated by classical methods. Having this in mind, the best compromise in terms of the quality of the deformation fields has been found for the consistent image registration framework. The experimental results suggest also that the image registration with the symmetrical warping of the input images outperforms the classical approaches, and simultaneously can be easily introduced to most known algorithms. Furthermore, the log-domain implicit group-wise image registration is proposed. By linking the various sets of images related to the different subjects, the proposed image registration approach establishes a common subject space and between-subject correspondences therein. Although the correspondences between groups of images can be found by performing the classic image registration, the reference image selection (not required in the proposed implementation), may lead to a biased mean image being estimated and the corresponding common subject space not adequate to represent the general properties of the data sets. The approaches to diffeomorphic image registration have been also utilised as the principal elements for estimating the movements of the organs in the pelvic area based on the dense deformation field prediction system driven by the partial information coming from the specific type of the measurements parameterised using the implicit surface representation, and recognising facial expressions where the stationary velocity fields are used as the facial expression descriptors. Both applications have been extensively evaluated based on the real representative data sets of three-dimensional volumes and two-dimensional images, and the obtained results indicate the practical usability of the proposed techniques

Age-dependent different action of curcumin in thyroid of rat.

The aging is associated with alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroidal axis which can lead to hypothyreosis. Our previous investigations has shown that polyphenol curcumin can enhance the manifestation of hypothyreosis in rats simultaneous treated with propylthiouracil. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between age-related changes and curcumin action in the thyroid of old rats. To this end, morphometric and radioimmunological methods were used. The study was conducted on 3- and 18-month-old male Wistar rats. The experimental rats were treated daily for 30 days by gavage with 100 mg/kg b.w. of curcumin. There were observed age-related changes in morphology and endocrine function of the thyroid. It was increase in the percentages of large follicles and significant decrease in FT3 level in 18-month-old rats in comparison to 3-month ones. Curcumin treatment lead to significant increase in FT3 and FT4 levels in 3-month-old experimental rats, but the level of FT3 significantly decreased in 18-month-old rats after curcumin administration. Our results show that curcumin activity depends on the functional condition of the rat thyroid which changes with age. This compound exerts stimulatory influence on the secretory function of the thyroid gland in young rats, but has rather weak antithyroid activity in old animals

Extended distance non-isocentric treatment in stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for lung cancer

Purpose: To obtain the maximum differential non-coplanar beams angle for a faster dose dropping outside Plan Target Volume (PTV) for lung cancer treated by Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), an extended distance non-isocentric (EDNI) treatment method was explored and developed. Methods: The EDNI requires delivering of the treatment beam at 120 cm or farther for sauce axial distance (SAD) instead of standard 100 cm. This change provides a more compact dose distribution around PTV and the lower toxicity to organs at risk (OAR) due to benefit of 120 cm SAD and more choice of beam and couch angle. A hand calculation formula for the translation between 100 SAD and EDNI was used to verify the treatment plan results. A phantom for end to end study based on this EDNI technique was used to compare with standard 100 SAD deliveries for SBRT. Three patients who underwent SBRT treatment were randomly chosen to demonstrate the benefits of EDNI technique. These treatment re-plans were applied to EDNI and evaluated for conformal index (CI) of PTV, R50% of PTV, 2 cm distance (D2cm) of PTV and Maximum dose (Dmax)of OARs to compare with original clinical plans. Results: All of the cases delivered by the EDNI technique satisfied dose requirements of RTOG 0263 and showed a faster dose dropping outside of PTV than standard SAD deliveries. The distance from PTV after 1.5 cm for the EDNI technique had a smaller maximum dose and much lower standard deviation for dose distribution. The EDNI applied plans for patients showed less R50% and D2cm of PTV (P≤ 0.05), also similar results for Dmax of esophagus, trachea and spinal cord. Conclusion: The EDNI method enhances the capabilities of linear accelerators as far as the increased gradient of dose drop-off outside of PTV is concerned. More angular separation between beams leads to more compact dose distributions, which allow decreasing volume of high dose exposure in SBRT treatments and better dose distribution on sensitive organs to minimize the treatment toxicity.</p
