    Simple Unbalanced Ranked Set Sampling for Mean Estimation of Response Variable of Developmental Programs

    An unbalanced ranked set sampling (RSS) procedure on the skewed survey variable is proposed to estimate the population mean of a response variable from the area of developmental programs which are generally implemented under different phases. It is based on the unbalanced RSS under linear impacts of the program and is compared with the estimators based on simple random sampling (SRS) and balanced RSS. It is shown that the relative precision of the proposed estimator is higher than those of the estimators based on SRS and balanced RSS for three chosen skewed distributions of survey variables

    Macroscopic self ordering of solution processible poly (3,3'-dialkylquaterthiophene) by floating film transfer method

    Ordering and alignment of p-conjugated polymer chains are highly desirable for high performance and long life organic electronic devices. We report here self assembly of ordered and aligned solution processible Poly(3,3‴-dialkylquaterthiophene) (PQT-12) polymer at macroscopic level using Floating Film Transfer Method (FTM). PQT-12 polymer film is formed over solution of ethylene glycol and glycerol at different temperatures viz. 22, 26, 33, and 38 C. PQT-12 films formed by FTM technique are further characterized for optical and morphological properties. UV-vis absorption (for polarize and unpolarize light) and surface topography/phase imaging are carried out by using UV-vis spectrometer and atomic force microscope (AFM), respectively. UV-vis spectra show the polymer chains alignment perpendicular to the film propagation direction and it is well supported by AFM images. The effect of temperature on ordering and alignment of PQT-12 shows 33 C as an optimum temperature for alignment of polymer chains (a little compromise in ordering). The heating of polymer films at 110 C for 2 h in ambient causes significant changes in UV-vis absorbance spectra, optical anisotropy, and AFM topography/phase imaging. Our studies provide better understanding of ordering and alignment of PQT-12 chains and also disordering on heating. This work further provides a facile and user-friendly technique for the long range ordered self assembly of PQT-12, which shows enormous potential for various electronic applications

    Optoelectrical anisotropy in graphene oxide supported polythiophene thin films fabricated by floating film transfer

    A facile method for the fabrication of highly oriented hybrid thin films of conjugated polymer (CP) with graphene oxide (GO) as 2D nano-filler over the high surface tension liquid substrate by floating film transfer is being reported. Formation of the self-assembled oriented hybrid thin film has been validated using multiple characterization techniques. Hybrid thin films thus prepared have been used for the fabrication of organic field effect transistors (OFETs) followed by investigation of anisotropic charge carrier transport. OFETs made with hybrid films oriented in channel direction exhibited the superior device performance with >6 fold augmentation in field effect mobility (μ) and one order improvement in on/off ratio as compared to that of devices based on pristine CP. However, pristine polymer shows 2.2 fold enhancement in mobility and one order augmentation in on/off ratio in parallel orientation as compared to the corresponding perpendicularly oriented films. Thus, our study has elucidated a path to obtain oriented, aligned, and self - assembled hybrid films for further improvement in the device performance aiming towards the applications in organic electronics

    Scar endometriosis: pre-operative diagnosis by fine needle aspiration cytology

    Scar endometriosis is a rare entity commonly observed after obstetrical and gynaecological procedures. The diagnosis is often delayed due to the non-specific nature of symptoms. Detailed clinical history of cyclical pain, location in proximity to a surgical scar and a suspicion of this rare entity in women of childbearing age are key to preoperative diagnosis. This is a case of a patient who presented with a troublesome scar after Caesarean section. On Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) a diagnosis of scar endometriosis was provided which was further confirmed on histopathology. Herein we discuss the cytomorphological features of this rare entity and also emphasize the importance of its diagnosis on FNAC which is a rapid and cost-effective method

    Role of subnetworks mediated by TNF α, IL-23/IL-17 and IL-15 in a network involved in the pathogenesis of psoriasis

    Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease clinically characterized by the appearance of red colored, well-demarcated plaques with thickened skin and with silvery scales. Recent studies have established the involvement of a complex signalling network of interactions between cytokines, immune cells and skin cells called keratinocytes. Keratinocytes form the cells of the outermost layer of the skin (epidermis). Visible plaques in psoriasis are developed due to the fast proliferation and unusual differentiation of keratinocyte cells. Despite that, the exact mechanism of the appearance of these plaques in the cytokine-immune cell network is not clear. A mathematical model embodying interactions between key immune cells believed to be involved in psoriasis, keratinocytes and relevant cytokines has been developed. The complex network formed of these interactions poses several challenges. Here, we choose to study subnetworks of this complex network and initially focus on interactions involving TNFα, IL-23/IL-17, and IL-15. These are chosen based on known evidence of their therapeutic efficacy. In addition, we explore the role of IL-15 in the pathogenesis of psoriasis and its potential as a future drug target for a novel treatment option. We perform steady state analyses for these subnetworks and demonstrate that the interactions between cells, driven by cytokines could cause the emergence of a psoriasis state (hyper-proliferation of keratinocytes) when levels of TNFα, IL-23/IL-17 or IL-15 are increased. The model results explain and support the clinical potentiality of anti-cytokine treatments. Interestingly, our results suggest different dynamic scenarios underpin the pathogenesis of psoriasis, depending upon the dominant cytokines of subnetworks. We observed that the increase in the level of IL-23/IL-17 and IL-15 could lead to psoriasis via a bistable route, whereas an increase in the level of TNFα would lead to a monotonic and gradual disease progression. Further, we demonstrate how this insight, bistability, could be exploited to improve the current therapies and develop novel treatment strategies for psoriasis

    Dynamics of a network mediated by IL-36 and involved in the pathogenesis of psoriasis

    The pathogenesis of the inflammatory, chronic, and common skin disease psoriasis involves immune cells, skin cells (keratinocytes), and the cytokines they secrete. Hyperproliferation and abnormal differentiation of keratinocytes are hallmarks of the disease. The roles of cytokines such as TNFα, IL-15, IL-17, and IL-23 in psoriasis have been studied through mathematical/computational models as well as experiments. However, the role of proinflammatory cytokine IL-36 in the onset and progression of psoriasis is still elusive. To explore the role of IL-36, we construct a network embodying indirect cell–cell interactions of a few immune and skin cells mediated by IL-36 based on existing knowledge. We also develop a mathematical model for the network and perform a global sensitivity analysis. Our results suggest that the model is most sensitive to a parameter that represents the level of cytokine IL-36. In addition, a steady-state analysis of the model suggests that an increase in the level of IL-36 could lead to the hyperproliferation of keratinocytes and, thus, psoriasis. Our analysis also highlights that the plaque formation and progression of psoriasis could occur through either a gradual or a switch-like increase in the keratinocyte population. We propose that the switch-like increase would be due to a bistable behavior of the network toward either a psoriatic or healthy state and could be used as a novel treatment strategy

    Epi InfoTM a mHealth tool for primary field data collection in subsample population of Uttarakhand- A cross sectional study.

    Background: A deficient data is among the biggest obstacle facing planners and policy makers. Health data collection in the developing world is often hampered by the high costs and inefficiencies of traditional large-scale paper-based surveys. mHealth using Epi-Info is most appropriate tool to create, share, deploy health surveys and for strengthening of health systems. The program runs on free and open software, is easy to use, and can be downloaded to handheld devices to be used by workers in the field.  Objectives: To find out the usefulness and limitations of data collection for mHealth by use of Epi InfoTM software.  Methods: The devices used Epi Info 7.1.5 (Android version), which has been modeled as a database with variables of the traditional form. A cross sectional survey among adolescents regarding their health needs was carried out in a sample of 200 adolescents (purposive sampling) of rural hilly (Jaunpur block of Tehri Garhwal district) and plain (Doiwala block of Dehradun district) areas of Uttarakhand by the use of Android tablets with Epi InfoTM.  Results: It was found that adolescent questionnaire tool developed in Epi InfoTM android tablet application is a powerful tool for data collection having numerable practical advantages like: Interview Time Tracking (ITT) that gives the reality check in field studies along with cases Geographical presentation by GIS mapping. In addition to this complete filling of data in field so no left over or guessing for data entry operator, paperless, bio-friendly. Despite of Tablet cost, it is cost effective as tablet can be repeatedly used for other surveys.  Conclusions: Epi InfoTM is a developing open access software for primary data collection and analyzing data from the field, with advantageous benefits of epidemiological surveys

    Association of inflammatory biomarkers with lung cancer in North Indian population

    Background: Lung cancer is characterized by uncontrolled cell growth of the lung tissues. It is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide.Objectives: The study aimed to determine the circulating CRP, TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8 levels in lung cancer and healthy control and also established association between these biomarkers with the smoking status as well as the stages of the disease.Methodology: 51 lung cancer patients and 51 healthy controls were enrolled in this case-control study. The serum levels of CRP, TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8 were measured in lung cancer patients and healthy control groups.Results: The levels of serum CRP, TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8 were significantly higher in lung cancer patients when compared with controls(P<0.0001). The levels of these biomarkers were also significantly higher in stage iii/iv as compared to stage i/ii(P<0.001). Significant difference in the levels of these biomarkers were also found in smoker and non-smoker lung cancer patients as compared to controls(P<0.001).Conclusion: CRP, TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8 are the promising biomarkers in the identification of lung cancer patients. The study also supports the association of inflammatory markers to lung cancer risk. Hence these findings suggest the levels of these biomarkerscould be a useful tool for guiding the diagnosis of lung cancer.Keywords: Lung cancer, biomarker, inflammation, stage, smoking
