Utilizing Online Dictionary Game to Empower Students’ Vocabulary Acquisition at Junior Secondary School: A Case Study at SMP Negeri 12 Tamalanrea Makassar
Abstract
Vocabulary acquisition has been the main concern of the researchers around the globe but still little can be reported about what best strategies to enhance vocabulary learning. The main concern of the present study is improvement of vocabulary learning by means of online dictionary game one of the leading secondary schools in Makassar. The main objective is to help teacher empower their teaching aids in order to strengthen the ability of learners in improving their own lexical items beyond school instruction. A mixed-method research design was utilized in undertaking the research. Thirty (30) students were randomly selected out of a 120 total population of the second grade as the sample of the study. The quantitative method was obtained from pre-test and post-test result. Meanwhile, the qualitative method was obtained from the results of in-depth interview analysis. The results confirm that almost all students make a significant increase on the achievement of vocabulary acquisition after the intervention. This study confirms very strong assurance that online vocabulary learning utilizing dictionary provides a substantial basis for EFL successful teaching and learning in Indonesian context.The research bears significant pedagogical implications for Indonesian teachers to constantly push their students to use dictionary, notably online dictionary that they can easily access through their mobile phone.

The Effect of Speakmate Toward Students’ Speaking Perfomance at English Department of Dayanu Ikhsanuddin University
The problem in this research are: Does speakmate influence students speaking performance at English Department, and how is students’ self-confidence of having speakmate on students’ speaking performance. This research aims to know the effect of speakmate on students’ speaking performance and know students’ self-confidence to speak mate. This research was a quantitative approach by applying experimental method of quasi-experimental design. The population was all of eight-semester college students , class C and class D who enrolled in academic year 2017/2018. The sample was taken by the. The researcher used purposive sampling, 10 students in experimental group and 10 students in the control group. The intrument used in this research was pretest and posttest in experimental group and control group in the form of speaking test. The finding indicated that the mean score of paired students with their speakmate of the experimental group in pretest is 60.66 in moderate category and the mean score in posttest is 77.33 in the good category. while in the control group, the mean score in pretest is 60.66 in moderate category an the mean score in posttest is 64.66 in the moderate category. The result of hypothesis analysis indicated that tcount is 2.905 is more significant than t-table is 2.101. it means that Ho is rejected and H1 is accepted. Based on the calculation of the t-test above, it can be concluded that speakmate influence students speaking performance. Majority of students show their agreements that speakmate influence students’ speaking performance
The Distribution of Academic Vocabulary List (AVL) in Undergraduate Theses: A Corpus Study
This study is a corpus-based study that aims to find out the use of words in Gardner and Davies' (2014) Academic Vocabulary List (AVL) in Undergraduate Theses in the field of English Education. A 2.2 million-word called undergraduate theses corpus was created in this study. The corpus consists of 200 undergraduate theses compiled from 10 Universities in Indonesia. The result shows that AVL words account for 24.79% of the entire education undergraduate theses, which contained 557,658 running words. AVL contains 3,015 core academic words (lemmas). Based on word frequency criteria, this study found 573-word forms and 871 lemmas, which coverage 31.48% of the whole Gardner and Davies' AVL that occur at least 63 times in the entire corpus and the word has to occur at least five times in five universities. The finding shows that AVL is effective for the students in writing undergraduate theses. However some of the words that are closely related to the English Education field are not found in the AVL, therefore an attempt to develop a new academic vocabulary specific to the English Education field is needed
Utilizing Local Wisdom-Based Reading Text to Improve Students’ Reading Comprehension of the Second Grade of MAN 1 Baubau
Local wisdom-based reading text as the authentic teaching material overcomes various obstacles of reading comprehension in EFL which activate the students’ schemata. This research is about utilization of the local wisdom-based reading text to improve students’ reading comprehension. The types of comprehension include identifying main idea, understanding unfamiliar words, identifying text details, and being able to find reference within the text, being able to make inference regarding the text. The research design was pre-experimental study using a sample of 27 students in the second grade of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Baubau. A pre-test was administrated before intervention and after the same test for the post-test was administered to find out the students’ improvement on reading comprehension. The result confirmed that local wisdom-based reading text is an effective tools to empower EFL learners’ comprehension. The most prevalent improvement regards familiarity of the lexical items ability in making inference as well as finding out main idea. The students’ positive responses that were based on the perception confirmed that local wisdom-based reading text could be encouraged to come up with pedagogical implication applicable for the EFL classroom notably at the second grade of MAN 1 Baubau
Students’ Perception towards E-Learning During The Covid-19 Pandemic at The Eleventh Grade of SMA Negeri 3 Palopo
The popularity of online learning in education became pervasive immediately during the outbreak of COVID-19. There are so many obstacles that lecturers and students may face while doing online learning throughout some applications, especially in areas that experience difficulties or obstacles while using the online system. This research aimed to figure out the students’ perception towards e-learning/online learning during the covid-19 pandemic at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 3 Palopo. The method that the researcher used in this research was the descriptive qualitative method and through the online questionnaire, the researcher administered open-ended questionnaire to the eleventh grade of the students in SMA Negeri 3 Palopo. The data was analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis. The result of this research indicates that the students had a negative perception towards e-learning during the covid-19 pandemic because the online learning was not effective enough. Some obstacles/problem were faced during the online learning was the unstable network, hard to understand the material, lack of internet quota, and lack of motivation
The Discrimination of Main Characters in Twain’s The Prince and The Pauper
The Prince and The Pauper is one of great novels written by a famous American author, Mark Twain. The novel tells about some discrimination experienced by two main characters who were born at the same time and with similar appearance. The objectives of the writing is to investigate the kinds of the discrimination reflected by the two major characters and to elaborate the way the characters resolve the problem of discrimination. In performing the analysis, the writer utilized structural approach focusing on the intrinsic elements of literary works which are inherent in the novel. The primary data concerned text analysis that accounted primarily for literary text of the novel. This was then analyzed by means of qualitative social constructivism interpretative paradigm. Results of analysis demonstrated that social class influences the discrimination, the second was that appearance influences the discrimination, and the third was that the education also influences the existence of discrimination. Tom Canty who was born within poor family got used to deal with the discrimination. It is because he has experienced the discrimination since he was born to the world. While Edward Tudor even though he finds it difficult at the beginning to deal with discrimination finally he could afford to adjust himself with the condition. The latter had much lesson to learn from the hardship
Factors that Affect the Improvement of Students’ Speaking Skills through Group Discussion Technique: A Case Study at Vocational High School 5 Gowa
The present study aimed to investigate the factors that affected the improvement of students’ speaking skills through group discussion technique at Vocational High School 5 Gowa. To carry out the phenomena, this study employed a descriptive qualitative methodology. The data were collected by using semi-structured interviews to obtain the deepest data about the factors that affected the improvement of students’ speaking skills through discussion technique at Vocational High School 5 Gowa. The populations were all classes in second grade, and then the samples were two classes that were chosen deliberately or purposively through nonprobability sampling. From the two classes, the participants were comprised of twenty (20) students, and each class involved 10 students. To analyze the data, this study used a thematic analysis process to discover the themes or factors that emerged as the data later. The results revealed that there are seven factors as themes appeared in this study, they are cohesiveness, conformity, roles, goals, charismatic leadership, inspiration, and competition and conflict factors. In conclusion, the seven factors assisted the students in improving their speaking skills; such as conveying ideas freely, having good confidence in speaking, and learning to respect other members’ ideas. The finding of this study can encourage English teachers at vocational school to use group discussion technique in their English classes to reach better teaching speaking skills improvement of the students
The Effectiveness of Think-Pair-Share Strategy on Improving Visually Impaired Students’ Speaking Skill at SLB-A Yapti Makassar
This study aimed to determine whether or not using the Think pair-share strategy could enhance students' speaking performance with visual impairments Grade XI of SLB-A Yapti Makassar in the academic year of 2020/ 202. This study was pre-experimental research in which the TPS strategy treated only one class. The data were qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were obtained by observing the teaching and learning process during the implementation of the TPS strategy and interviewing the students about this strategy. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were gained by assessing the students’ speaking skills through the pre-test and post-test. The instruments for collecting the data were the speaking rubric, observation guidelines, and interview guidelines. The results showed that the TPS strategy effectively improved the students’ speaking skills of visually impaired students. There are different significant scores on the speaking performance of students on pretest and posttest. The frequency and percentage of student scores in specific categories indicating post-test results are higher than pre-test results. Nonetheless, the TPS strategy also has the drawbacks where it was very time consuming during the implementation since students need to be dealt with the given lesson and the screen reader
The Influence of the Audio-Lingual Method in Improving the Students' Vocabulary at SMA Negeri 21 Makassar
This study aims to find out the influence of the audio-lingual method (AML) in learning student vocabulary. The study uses a quantitative methodology to assess students' proficiency with the audio-lingual method (AML) in vocabulary learning. The audio-lingual Method (AML) arose after the aural-oral approach was devised in 1939 at the first English language Institute at the University of Michigan, United States by Charles Fries. The population of this study is first-grade students of SMA Negeri 21 Makassar 2023 There were five classes consisted 33 students per class. Moreover, The collecting data in this research are vocabulary tests and questionnaires. A vocabulary test is the instrument to find out whether dialogue can improve their vocabulary, while a questionnaire is an instrument for knowing the students' responses. The result of this study is Using the audio-lingual Method (ALM), students' pre-test and post-test scores on their vocabulary tests increased. The quantity of data, where 40% of the data showed that the student's scores improved as a result of using the audio-lingual method (ALM) in their English learning. In particular, with the growing influence of technology, vocabulary learning should be easier to be creative with, as there are many learning models that teachers can be inspired by to make their classes suit students' learning preferences, especially in this era
Students’ Perceptions of The Use Of ‘TELL’ in English Learning Process in Bosowa University Makassar
Technology in language teaching has become an incredibly important part of current pedagogy. The present study seeks to justify the perceptions of students about the use of Technology Enhanced Language Learning (TELL)Â in the process of learning English in Bosowa University Makassar. A quantitative research design was employed as the approach to gathering data about the perception of the students. The questionnaire was used to cater as the research tools for the achievement of research goals. Descriptive statistic was performed to analyze the obtained data through questionnaires.
