Classification of covariance matrix eigenvalues in polarimetric SAR for environmental monitoring applications
In this paper, we describe novel techniques for automatic classification of the dominant scattering mechanisms associated with the pixels of polarimetric SAR images. Specifically, we investigate two operating scenarios. In the first scenario, it is assumed that the polarimetric image pixels locally share the same covariance (homogeneous environment), whereas the second scenario considers polarimetric pixels with different power levels and the same covariance structure (heterogeneous environment). In the second case, we invoke the Principle of Invariance to get rid of the dependence on the power levels. For both scenarios, we formulate the classification problem in terms of multiple hypothesis tests which is addressed by applying the model order selection rules. The performance analysis is conducted on both simulated and measured data and demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach
Diagnosis prognosis and therapy of phyllodes tumor of the breast
The authors report 4 cases very interesting for the differentil diagnosis of philloides tumor, a brest tumor with a mainly local malignant potential.
Such tumors althrough presenting histologic clinical and instrumental features which allow for a presumtive pre-surgical diagnosis often has characteristics comparable to other breast pathologies with a different natural history.
the authors after analyzing clinical mammographic echographic and histological features of the tumorsuggest the most appropriate therapy for the local control of the lesions. Surgical excission shoud be carried at least one centimeter deep into the normal tissueto prevent local relapse related to an incomplete enucleation. Infact the tumor is only apparently capsulated .An adequate clinical and instrumental follow-up for the early diagnosis of the early occurrent relapse is mandatory
Low Vitamin K and Vitamin D Dietary Intake in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases
The inadequate dietary intake of Vitamin D and Vitamin K is an easily reversible factor favoring IBD-associated bone loss, but data on Vitamin K are lacking. A 28-item quantitative food frequency questionnaire was administered to 193 IBD patients (89 Crohnâs disease and 104 ulcerative colitis), and 199 controls. Patientsâ demographics, clinical and laboratory findings were analyzed in relation to recommended daily allowances. VitD intake was inadequate both in the IBD and control patients (8.3 ± 4.5 ”g/day in IBD, 53.1% RDA, and 9.7 ± 5.9 ”g/day, 63.2% RDA, respectively). Conversely, the mean ViK intake was less than adequate in IBD, at 116.7 ± 116.3 ”g/day (78.7% RDA), and high in controls, at 203.1 ± 166.9 ”g/day (138.8% RDA). Nonetheless, due to marked inter-individual differences, diets were severely lacking VitK in 40% of UC and 49% of CD patients, more so in females and those with active disease. The intake of Vit D was non-significantly lower in colitis than that in Crohnâs disease (7.9 vs. 8.7 ”g/day). The opposite was observed for VitK (123.5 vs. 107.0 ”g/day). Thus, the diet lacks the micronutrients involved in bone wellbeing in a large proportion of IBD patients. While VitD supplementation is the rule, VitK shortages need proactive nutritional intervention
Analysis of LGV usage for the improvement of a customized production
The paper describes an approach for analyzing the use of a Laser-Guided Vehicle (LGV) in the context of the small and medium-sized enterprise. The use of LGVs is an efficient solution to provide more flexibility in the context of Just-In-Time production; however, the investment cost can limit this application. A methodology has been proposed in this work to analyze the technical feasibility of using an LGV in the manufacturing industry of customized products. The test case focuses on the study of a laser-guided system to optimize the handling of molds for customized production. In this scenario, an LGV is proposed to substitute manual carts used for moving molds from the warehouse to the injection machines. The traditional path included an intermediate station for pre-heating the molds in hot-air ovens. The proposed solution includes the study of an induction heating system on the LGV to optimize time and energy consumption
Quantum Technology PCK for Teachers
For many years quantum physics has been introduced in European secondary schools. However, quantum physics, and even more quantum technology, is not sufficiently part of present physics teachersâ Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK). For this reason, the QTEdu pilot project âQuantum Technology PCK for teachersâ wants to put together the expertise of several educational researchers in order to i) pre-research the Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) teachers need to teach Quantum Technology (QT) and ii) Synoptic PCK Map of practical use for teachers and teacher educators
Introducing Quantum Technologies at Secondary School Level: Challenges and Potential Impact of an Online Extracurricular Course
Stimulated by the European project “QTEdu CSA”, within the flagship “Quantum Technologies”, a community of researchers active in the fields of quantum technologies and physics education has designed and implemented an extracurricular course on quantum physics concepts and quantum technologies applications for high school. The course, which featured eight interactive lectures, was organized online between March and May 2021 and attended by about 250 students from all over Italy. In this paper, we describe the main tenets and activities of the course. Moreover, we report on the effectiveness of the course on students’ knowledge of the basic concepts of quantum physics and students’ views about epistemic aspects and applications of quantum technologies. Results show that the designed activities were effective in improving students’ knowledge about fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics and familiarizing them with quantum technology applications
Use of Dalbavancin in Skin, Bone and Joint Infections: A Real-Life Experience in an Italian Center
Dalbavancin is a lipoglycopeptide approved for the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI). The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety in all patients who received at least one administration of dalbavancin. Methods: We carried out a retrospective study of the use of dalbavancin in 55 patients at the Azienda Ospedaliera Ospedali Riuniti Umberto I (Ancona, Italy) from February 2017 to May 2020 and compared âon labelâ and âoff labelâ use of dalbavancin in ABSSSI and non-ABSSSI. Results: A total of 55 patients were included in the study. The median age was 61 years; 51% had ABSSSI; 24% had prosthetic joint infections, and 14% had osteomyelitis. A total of 53% received a single 1500 mg infusion of dalbavancin, and 18% received a second dose 14 days later; 24% of patients received further doses at 14-day intervals. In 91% of cases, patients achieved clinical objectives with dalbavancin: 96% of patients with ABSSSI and 69% of those with prosthetic joint infections. Conclusions: Dalbavancin was shown to have an excellent tolerability profile and to be a highly successful therapeutic approach even in those cases treated âoff-labelâ
